View Full Version : My First 5-Color Deck

It's not much. It works in the same sense that a common green deck would work; getting cards out fast. This works because of my understanding of how colors work finally and how to mathematically include mana. Being still fairly new to the game, it took me a while to actually understand this.
Creatures:
Naya Hushblade x4
Jund Hackblade x4
Bant Sureblade x4
Rip-Clan Crasher x4
Jhessian Infiltrator x4
Giltspire Avenger x2
Radha, Heir to Keld x2
Progenitus x2
Enchantments:
Trace of Abundance x4
Winter's Night x2
Pillory of the Sleepless x2
Lands:
Snow-Covered Forest x8
Snow-Covered Mountain x6
Snow-Covered Plains x4
Snow-Covered Island x3
Jungle Shrine x3
Thawing Glaciers x2
Savage Lands
Snow-Covered Swamp x2
I have only had one chance at testing it so far.
I've got a nice little bit of ramping if I pull out the right cards, I just don't have that many big cards. The biggest card I have is Progenitus and that comes at somewhat of a cost in time lost trying to get it out.

Naya, Jund, and Bant all have the same basic ability. To get a +1/+1 counter if there are any other multicolored permanents on the battlefield under my control and since all of my cards are multicolored, I am sure to always have that effect put to use.
Their second effects that come from the counter are where it gets interesting. I have all sides covered; Naya has shroud, Jund has haste and Bant has first strike.
Having all three of these out on the field at once proves pretty difficult to handle if you are not expecting it, especially if you account for Giltspire Avenger. If I've got Bant and Giltspier out together, I can choose to block with Bant and then just tap Giltspire and you are left with one less creature.
Rip-Clan Crasher plays the same was as Jund Hackblade but without the counter. The whole goal here is to attack fast and have you playing with your back against the wall. The fact that my attackers and creatures are relatively weak does not concern me once I get out Progenitus.
Jhessian is a constant barrage. If I am not pulling the cards I need, and even if I am, I have a creature to constantly swing with for 2.
If I am short on Mountains, I can always just attack with Radha and make up for that with two red mana and can still get out Progenitus.
The Trace of Abundances act just like Radha; as a balance of sorts. If I do not pull the mana, I will always have some sort of help getting the mana I need for the big play.
Winter's Night assures me that I have the mana I need. If I have only 5 mana, one of each color, I am tapping out for Progenitus every time if I've got this card in play.
Pillory of the Sleepless keeps me safe for any number of turns and you are consistently losing life.
All in all, this deck seems to only have a few flaws; one in that I have no real safety from being countered or the like. It's a pretty average deck and that is how I built it; average. I'm not pulling any punches early, I've got no real "big play" opportunities aside from Progenitus and my only real opportunity to win is if my opponent doesn't get out any creatures early.
I plan on keeping this overall strategy -- picking at your life bit by bit. I will probably take out the Progenitus mana-ramping, though; that would give me about 12 cards alone that I could build up the deck with.
Sorry for the late explanation of my card choices, I was pretty busy the other day and just wanted to get the deck posted.

I believe this deck would rather belong to the budget & casual forum.
With that being said, it seems like the following cards would make excellent additions to your strategy:
// Main deck:
Pillar of the Paruns
Jenara, Asura of War
// Sideboard:
Maelstrom Pulse
Terminate
Instead of Progenitus, I would probably play Coalition Victory as the win condition here. Remember: Coalition Victory only checks for 5 colors, not 5 creatures. So 1 of your multicolored creatures can count for 3 of the colors -> 5 basics and 2 creatures = you win.
In related news, you are going to have a rough time against Legacy staples such as Pernicious Deed (X=3), Engineered Explosives (X=2), and...anything which flies. You also have no 1-cost cards in the deck (maybe run Figure of Destiny or some other split color card which can grow to large proportions?), and combo decks are going to..well..run over you, pretty much. On a more positive note, it seems like Tarmogoyf will not become a large creature against you very soon, though, as you only play creatures and enchantments.

I'm going to build it up of course. This was just something that I built off the top of my head and did it rather fast.
I'll look into these cards. I'm familiar enough with the names but not with what they do yet. :P

Also, I'd like to point out that the people that I play with are more of a laid back group. They all have the capabilities of playing power decks and I have played with them with those types of decks; for the most part, however, we're just building decks to have fun with.
I think that the only thing they've got on me is years in the game. I'd like to eventually try my luck at some tournaments, which is why I am trying to hone my deck building skills. http://i54.tinypic.com/2a0115g.gif

I am almost certain that Kargan Dragonlord is going to be making an appearance in this deck.
It's pretty similar to Figure of Destiny.
edit: Actually, I am going to use Kargan in a new deck that I am building. I will probably discontinue work on this deck for a while.
