Please note that while we're not trying to be dicks about it, the last prize package will apply ONLY if 32 people attend the event. Not 31, not 30, not 29. We have reasons for wanting an event with 32 people in it. If 30-31 people do show up, I have people I can use to shore it up to 32, so it ain't the end of the world. But still! Tell your friends! Cry from the rooftops! Legacy at Melrose Music & Comics!

(That includes the people getting store credit.)
Are we to understand that 7th-12th is getting store credit?

Why not give the Personal Tutors as the raffle prize and stick the USea somewhere in the top 6?

This. Personal Tutor is a really bad prize.

That said, the rest looks good, so I just shouldn't get 6th.

Fair enough. Let me see what I can do about getting a better prize for 6th place.

And yes, 7th-12th may be getting store credit. I need to look at my cards and see if there's anything worth giving. If not, it'll be credit.

The Underground Sea is going to be raffled off because I want to encourage attendance. Even if you get last, you could win something awesome!

Edit: Done. That prize pool should be much more palatable for everyone involved. (Y'know. Except me. :P)

What Does every player plays every round mean? You cant id or somthing? no bye?

MelroseMusic&Comics

As opposed to elimination. If there an uneven number of entrants, there will be buys. You can drop, etc. I was just defining what Swiss is, for those who might not know.

If there is a top eight, you really should find more comparable prizes for 3/4 and for 5-8. But it looks like you will be running a total of six rounds of swiss (one undefeated remaining plus one more round)?

I vote for cut to Top 8.

I understand; however, I'm working with what I have. The Moat and Underground Seas were bought specifically for the tournament, and the rest is from our stock.

I gave out prizes based on a value curve:

Moat: $250ish on eBay;
Sea + Taiga: $150
Sea: $95
Force + Dreadnought: $70
Goyf: $45
Sinkhole: $30
Hierarch, Crypt: ~$19
Hierarch: $12

And then the store credit for places 9-12. Based on feedback from this event we'll adjust prizes for future events accordingly. It's a learning process. We want to make as many players as happy as possible.

To be honest, it's not worth giving out prizes to any place in the tournament if they're not even going to equal the admission($25). Better than nothing, but I don't think it'll draw anyone to the tournament, it would feel like a consolation prize. To add insult to injury, there's going to be someone out there who didn't perform (nearly) as well who's going to get a prize that is only outclassed by 1st and 2nd.

The prizes start being bad around 6th place, with a played Sinkhole. I'd rather have store credit in the same amount that you attribute to the cards in 6th-8th. You should probably forget 9th/10th-12th place and stack it for 6th-8th/9th place.

If you want 32 people to come, I suggest making the prizes more balanced(good). Your problem is the top heavy card, Moat. For less than the price(and if you want to make the value $250, then much less) you can setup two very respectable prizes: two of taiga, bayou, volc, or even savannah. It would serve to attract more people.

You're getting feedback now, with the tournament a little over a week away. You can still change the plan.

EDIT:
By the way, is the Moat English or Italian?

Sorry, but my question was about if there is a cut, or if it is swiss plus one.

Also 2Rach brings up a really good point. Ninth place gets 11 dollars in store credit and 1/24th of a Underground Sea. That is worth almost as much as 2x 8th place.

My solution would be to: keep 1 and 2 the same, give 3/4 each a Sea, store credit for 5-8 of $35, and raffle off a choice between the force and the goyf.

Apologies for not answering your questions.

I'm unfamiliar with the term "cut," as I am with the phrase "Swiss plus one." Please elaborate.

That cut works for me; everyone seems to be in agreement. I'll change it.

Apologies for not answering your questions.

I'm unfamiliar with the term "cut," as I am with the phrase "Swiss plus one." Please elaborate.

The DCI rules state how many rounds should be in a tournament. This will vary based on how if there is a "cut" or not.

With 32 people, after 5 rounds of swiss play you will have (assuming no draws) 1 undefeated person and a number of people with 1 loss. If you were to award the prizes like this, it would function like a single elimination event with random prizes to the people with one loss. The DCI does not endorse this method.

Swiss plus 1 add one more round of swiss to that, which means that a player with 1 loss can end up winning first prize, which is nice. Prizes are still awarded pretty randomly.

A cut would take place after the fifth round, and the top eight players would then play a single elimination bracket. So in the first round of the single elimination, anyone who losses is going to finish in 5th through 8th. Because of people being guaranteed to make the top eight (and the cut) with a loss in the last round, you will have players who will intentionally draw and go get a snack before playing the last rounds.

But technically with a cut, everyone doesn't play in "all" of the rounds.

I agree that the prize support should be re-evaluated. Top 8 should at the very least break even for the day.

Listen to him. He is so correct is it mind boggling. I don't think anyone who did poorly would complain to getting a Goyf or a Force.

Also, I highly doubt 32 people would show up with these prizes, and I can almost guarantee that 32 people will not show up if there is no cut to Top 8. People can still play if they don't make Top 8 for fun, but Top 8 is a pretty big thing for players, it means that even if you squeak into it, you can still take down the tournament. It is much more forgiving and it rewards skill much more. (I would be pissed if there was no cut and my tiebreaker made is so i was below 4th).

I realize that you don't do a lot of tournaments, but if you want to start, listen to saspook. He is very experienced with this sort of thing. Also, look to emulate Knight Ware and Majestix. Both stores know how it should be.

We do do a lot of tournaments. Just not huge legacy ones. :) (Yes, 'huge' is relative)

Soooooooo here we go. Post edited with the latest incarnation of the prize support. This is probably final. I went kinda crazy; there's now a cut, as you guys can see, and prizes have been expanded significantly, so even if you get, y'know, 12th (assuming 32 person attendance,) you still walk away with some hopefully great memories and no money lost. Also 1/24th a Force/Goyf. I hear what everyone's saying about prizes less than entry fees being a bit lame, but as someone pointed out, something > nothing. Pretty much every time.

Hopefully this is much, much more palatable. Hit me with your feedback.

Since there is a cut, maybe making 5-8th the same prize would be good. Nothing drastic, just for the 32 ppl have about 52 each in credit and for the other ones, 30 ea. Just since the 5-8th are kind of random. Otherwise, looks perfect!

Also, if there are more than 24ish people we should cut to top 8, and before that stick to Top 4. Top 6 doesn't really work sine after the quarters someone would get a bye and that isn't really fair.

Done. Prizes standardized and further increased (again...) for 32 players... as I'm no doubt sure most can see, I'm intent on getting a full house.

I'm probably going to go to bed soon... I'll check for feedback in the morning, make changes as I see fit, then copy all these changes to the 5+ other forums where I posted them.

Thanks for the help in making this the best event (and most unprofitable :P) it can be!

I'm not worried. I need 32 people at this event; that is the whole point of its existence. If I lose a bit of money I always have Music & Comics. :P

Seriously though, my primary goal here is to attract players. I'm not in this one to make any money. Take advantage!

My vote is if you want to keep the prize support as is then decrease the cost of admission. Volume is always better than charging a high price and getting less players. There is a bit of a distance between 20 and 25 for some reason. Some people don't want to justify paying that much for magic. You could charge an extra 5 for late comers after a certain time as Knight-Ware does. That way you also have MORE fringe business as well. :)

Glad you're starting these and hopefully I'll be able to come/play.

MelroseMusic&Comics

A fair point. Unfortunately at this time my capacity is exactly 32, so more attendance wouldn't be possible. I also have to clear this with the big boss, and $25 is what he wants. So.... He wins!

It's definitely a learning experience for us, and my Legacy events will benefit greatly from it.

Also, I'm a little confused as to why this prize pool justifies a lower entry fee. Here's my math:

English Moat, NM: $250
Seas x3, NM: $285
Taiga, Played: $45
Total credit given out: $455

Total: $1035, a significant amount more than the $800 I'd be taking in should 32 people attend. I'm not trying to attack you or anything, I'm just wondering if maybe I'm missing something.

MelroseMusic&Comics
02-28-2011, 09:48 PM
Maybe I should mention it more prominently. Attendance will be capped at 32 people! I simply don't have space for more!

No the prizes are good..don't get me wrong, but they are very top heavy. The moat for first is fine, but it seems like there is a huge drop right after that.

If you're capped at 32, then there is nothing you can do of course.

I guess I'm just accustomed to Knight-ware and 2x duals all the way down.
