I agree, that's why I'm holding myself to it
I'm notorious for letting people show late and I just won't be able to do that for this event. All my major events now start at 1pm. As in round 1 goes up at 1pm. No exceptions for the big stuff. I want people home at a reasonable time... and I want to be home for a reasonable time :p
I'm really looking forward to this event and obviously I want you guys to get the maximum enjoyment out of it so I enjoy feedback. Very happy with what's been said so far, and this tourney has only been announced for a couple hours

So... I won a trial for providence at another store and fell into a playset of Japaense Polluted Deltas
Kird Ape: And?
And I'm now doing a free 2nd chance side event for them
Kird Ape: I thought you were just going to brag.
STFU Ape.

Sorry I get carried away sometimes. All the time. Anyway, this event happens to mark the 4 year anniversary of the store. I'm planning many things for this event. The free side event for 4 Deltas is just one of many to come
I'm very excited for this event and I believe it will be a blast. I hope you will join us <3

We're almost to page 3, time to bump!
I always try to bump with a purpose, so here's some updates:
So I plan more side events besides the 4 free deltas =D
There will be entire large pizzas available to order for $7. That's tax and tip included
I'm reserving extra space in the building because I believe I'm going to need it. I can comfortably seat 60 in my store, but we'll have extra rooms and hallway if necessary. No one will be turned away. I've seated 100 for previous events no problem and this could get up there in attendance.
I'm looking forward to this more than anything in the history of mah store. It's no secret I enjoy legacy more than most formats
Kird Ape: You like drafting more
Me: Stay out of this Ape.
Between this, my thursday weekly legacy, and my 1k on may 21st, I believe I have more big lead-in events for the GP than anywhere else.
Oh almost forgot, the Thursday before the GP I'm giving away 4 blue duals for $10
More info on that soon. I just can't stop adding events
So hopefully see you guys for upcoming events, but if you could only pick one to attend I'd say come to this GP:Trial.
It marks the anniversary of my store and I really plan on it being a special day <3

This trial is fast approaching, and I'm running out of time to add prizes
9th-12th will receive prize of $50 credit each at 60 or more players. I believe we'll get in range of that with this trial. If we don't hit 60, I'll still be doing the free side event for a playset of Japanese Deltas. If we do hit it, then the side event will still go off AND 9th-12th will get $50 credit each
I would like this to be the largest attended GP:Providence trial in the country. That is a personal goal on what will mark the 2 year anniversary of my ownership of Die Hard Games. I think with the prizes being offered (and added ), the location of my store in relation to the GP, and the wonderful support you have shown my store it is very attainable.
Regardless of attendance, I will do everything in my power to make sure you have a good time if you choose to attend.
I'm going on 3 months of planning this, as it isn't just a normal tournament for me.
I really want May 1st to be a memorable day (in a good way ) for the store and I hope you will join us for our Grand Prix Providence Trial.
Sincerely,
Dave <3

Alright sorry I couldn't help myself
This event is under a week away, and many people approached me about it at the Nats Qualifier I went to and at SCG over the weekend.
The duals are all in very fine (see what I did above? :p) to near mint condition and are being given out guaranteed. The $100 credit each to 5th-8th is at over 32 players, which we will hit no problem. First and second place will also get 3 byes each, and at over 64 players a third set will be given away.

Polluted Delta:Don't forget about me! I'm a free 2nd chance side event!
Ok I'm done
I really am looking forward to this. I have the room next door available and can now easily seat over 100. Plus I can't guarantee it, but I'm working on a visit by our lovely neighbor the redbull girls ;-)
I'll have other side events besides the free delta tourney if people want them. Sanctioned drafts will be all weekend at $10 with 5-3-1-1 payout, although I expect most drafts to go off the day before at our Nats qualifier on Saturday.
I really am looking forward to this event more than any I've done since taking the store over. I hope you join us.

Anyway...
This event is by far the one I've most looked forward to out of all the events I've scheduled in the short two years I've been owner of DHG. In that time, I'd like to think my store played a small role in the thriving legacy scene the area is now enjoying. I was the first to start doing legacy in the area and it's really been a passion of mine to make sure you guys enjoy playing legacy at my store on a consistent basis. Now that the format has exploded in popularity tenfold, my passion to deliver a quality tournament experience has never been greater.
I believe this event will be very special and I am pulling out all the stops for it.
See you Sunday and thanks for all the support.

Perfectly fine to bring in any food. I often hand out menus to people. I have zero problem with it, I just ask people clean up after themselves.
I have numerous pizza shops I have deals with. $7 Large pizzas (tip/tax included!) from Dominos are very popular.
Or you can bring in food from wherever. I only stock soda/candy, so full meals pretty much come from other places.

I know that two BANT decks were knocked out of the first round of the top 8. The top 4 split, 1 of the four decks was burn. Beyond that I didn't get a chance to look at much of the top 8. The event had a great turnout and prize support but Dave definitely seemed unprepared for this number of people, things were said and then changed many times over the course of the event. For instance the side event ended up being 4 rounds with top 8 and left us deciding between 20 minute rounds or splitting. He also forgot to mention the side event wouldn't be sanctioned...that was a big one for a couple of people who could have stayed in the main event to attempt to secure rating byes. All in all a good tournament, I'd like to see Dave get a little bit better about starting his events on time (1 hour late for the main event, side event had long waits between rounds) but the store was fun, good atmosphere, and great prize support. Thanks for the tournament Dave.

I was the G/B/W Rock player in the top 8. Hell of a tournament, and quite a long day. Ended up placing fifth after being eliminated in a very close match with Nicholas Malatesta and his very solid Elf Deck, ironically enough for the second time in local GPT finals in the past two weeks. :)
While I don't remember the entire top 8 due to being exhausted after a very long day of Magic, most of it looked like the following:
Rock
Burn
Legacy Caw Blade
Elves
Two Bant decks
I also think there may have been a Team America build in there, although it may have gotten knocked out in the seventh round before the cut. Thanks to Dave and Joe for running an awesome event, and congrats to the rest of the top eight and my opponents for some excellent competition.
I'm working on a full report which I'll hopefully get up later this evening.

The event had a great turnout and prize support but Dave definitely seemed unprepared for this number of people, things were said and then changed many times over the course of the event.
Hi Joe thanks for the feedback.
As far as the main event, nothing was changed other than adding prize support  I did correct myself later in the day in regards to the upcoming legacy 1k, because I mis-spoke about it during opening announcements. I said anyone playing in the 1k would get $5 off because they played in the trial. I meant to say you'd get $5 credit for playing in both events. Credit can be used for anything in my store except events and that's a policy I've had since taking over 2 years ago. I didn't mean to confuse anyone, so sorry if I did. It's still free credit
Other than that mental gaffe, I don't think anything changed on the day except for adding prizes. I don't think you're criticizing me for upgrading prize support, because that would be crazy :p
For instance the side event ended up being 4 rounds with top 8 and left us deciding between 20 minute rounds or splitting. He also forgot to mention the side event wouldn't be sanctioned...that was a big one for a couple of people who could have stayed in the main event to attempt to secure rating byes.
The side event was always planned as a swiss with a cut. It was supposed to be cut to top 4, but I had 30 players which is like double than expected for that so that's why we adjusted. I'll admit the side event could've run smoother and next time it will. Next time I'm just going to do straight swiss for side events. I wanted to run it earlier, but some people asked me to wait after round 4 (I believe you were one of them :p), so I did. By the way who said it was unsanctioned? It's definitely sanctioned and both the main and side events are being uploaded tonight.
I wasn't thrilled about giving top 4 only two options: splitting or 20 minute top 4, but it was midnight and the main event had been over for nearly two hours. The side event quarterfinals had a match that was pushing an hour and a half. That put me in a tough spot. Can't have a side event go until 2am. As far as letting people play, you'd be hard pressed to find a storeowner who lets people stay in their store longer than I do. I pretty much never kick people out, but we were coming off a nats qualifier the day before and between that and this trial (plus yugioh sneak peeks all weekend ) I wanted to be out at midnight.
All in all a good tournament, I'd like to see Dave get a little bit better about starting his events on time (1 hour late for the main event, side event had long waits between rounds) but the store was fun, good atmosphere, and great prize support. Thanks for the tournament Dave.
It's hard to prepare for an extra 50 people showing up, but we rented another room next door just in case and comfortably seated everyone. I admit I didn't expect 90, but I'd say we handled it pretty well given the crowd that ended up showing. Main event started at 1:45pm and the swiss was done by 10:00pm. I'd say that's pretty good considering the crowd that showed.
Most GP:Trials don't get 90 people... in fact I don't think any came close this season. So you have to keep that in mind when the event starts 45 minutes later than planned. That's really not too bad considering the volume we ended up with. You guys were spectacular at getting decklists in by 1pm so thank you. It's worth noting our 1k Legacy http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/showthread.php?20268-5-21-ri-1k-legacy-tcq-at-die-hard-games-d is staring at noon and we expect another big turnout for that. The earlier start time should help getting you guys home at a reasonable time.
Joe I'm glad you had a good time overall. I appreciate you giving me feedback even if I didn't agree with all of it (side event was definitely 100% sanctioned :p). I hope to see you at future events of mine and congrats on splitting in the side event.

8th: Adam Tanner /w NO Bant

The reason some people think the side event wasn't sanctioned is because the DCI numbers on the match slips were labelled as "Joe17," or some such thing, so people thought that meant it wouldn't be sanctioned.

The reason some people think the side event wasn't sanctioned is because the DCI numbers on the match slips were labelled as "Joe17," or some such thing, so people thought that meant it wouldn't be sanctioned.
Yeah I typed the numbers in by hand afterwards. When it says 'joe' on the match slip, that means a number hasn't been typed in yet. I typed them in after because I wanted to get the side event moving, but the event was most definitely sanctioned.
If an event is unsanctioned, those words will come out of my mouth.
I've never had an unsanctioned side event, and probably never will, but if it ever comes up you'll hear me say it.
Both the main event and side event are being uploaded tonight. Decklists/pics soon.
Thanks again

I think Trenton was actually running a Burn variant, and it was quite good. I ran into him in round 5 and I had a match that was far too close for my comfort. ;)
Thanks Grant, that was a really tough match. Once KoTR gets online, life gets hard for any deck ;)
PS: Thanks for being a good sport about my desperate attempts to get out of a no-win scenario lol.
EDIT: People hated on my 8th edition, white-bordered mountains all day.

Hey dave not gonna qoute your ebook but thought I would respond. Sorry for the mistake about side event being sanctioned, our dci numbers were not on our slips and players in the event said it was unsanctioned due to that. I totally understand hose numbers were higher then expected and just wanted to clarify that none of my comments were directed toward warning people away from this store, I certainly intend to come back and encourage others to get out to these events too. Glad to hear the side event was sanctioned and sorry if the vibe of my post was overly criticizing. My comments about the time mostly had to do with the fact that we had more then a half hour of down time between rounds and the top 8 in the side event and the late start of the main event, subsoquent Rounds were well timed. And as far as the top 8 match that went long they should have been spoken to after 50 minutes. Again I just want to be clear that I am not saying this was a bad event and that I was impressed with the store overall.
