Hello all, First post on the Rules area here.

How would Counterbalance interact with Storm? Do I get priority to use counterbalance against the original copy, and then, if I have a card such as, Diving top, could I change to a card with a Cost equal to the copies or because they are being put directly on the stack counterbalance never has a chance to trigger against the copies?

Thanks in Advance, sorry if my question doesn't make any sense its 3 am and I worked all day <_<

Counterbalance doesn't trigger for the copies, because they are Not "played". You can counter the original spell, but that's all.

So, versus Storm you have to counter the fastmana and the tutor-spells, not the final ToA or EtW

However I can stifle the Storm and Counterbalance the original cast right? I am just wondering if I stifle the storm, does that mean I pass the chance to use counterbalance, or can I use Counterbalance First, and Retain Priority to stifle?

Sorry for stupid questions, I am just unsure of exactly how some interactions work, and for some reason my mind is not wrapping properly around the ideas as they are in the rule book.

You certainly can. If you have counterbalance and someone plays a Storm spell (let's say ToA) you can put the CB on the stack, revealing a CMC 4 spell and still play a stifle on the same ToA. If you want to you can even stifle first and counter the ToA with the triggered ability of CB by letting the triggered ability go on the stack and respond with playing a stifle.

Thanks guys, have no idea why my mind is working so poorly lately. I'm new to Legacy so I'm trying to learn all the intricacies and nuances before the SCG in April and the Grand Prix in may. Don't want to go and look like a jackass by not quite understanding interactions.

You get priority both before and after your Counterbalance trigger resolves.

On your opponent's turn, the Storm trigger will be below the Counterbalance on the stack, so you can Stifle before or after - in the rare case your opponent plays a Storm spell on your turn, the Storm trigger will be on the stack above the Counterbalance, so you'll have to Stifle first thing.
