Hey guys! Since everyone seemed to have so much fun with our last Legacy event, we're holding another one on Sunday, the 10th of April. We've taken your feedback to heart and evened out prize support, lowered the entry fee and added a late-comer tax, and in general smoothed out the process. Check it out!

Looks great!

Hopefully 32 people will show up this time!

Indeed. Word of mouth is what it takes, really. Hopefully enough people enjoyed themselves last time that they'll tell their friends and we'll get our 32!

And if not, well... No matter. I'm sure everyone will enjoy themselves.

Okay, seriously people. Last Moat tournament was infinite value(w/ surprise promo prizes) for players and you guys didn't show up. These are better prizes(better distributed, anyway-less entry fee too) so you have no excuse unless you don't have the cards(or work, or out of town, or dead relative, or meteor extra terrestial invasion). And even then, lots of people would probably lend you cards with collateral.

MelroseMusic&Comics

I can understand why though.

First of all, it was announced only about two weeks in advance; people could have had other plans for then. Additionally, it was (well, at least scheduled) pretty early (at noon,) which didn't give people who lived far away enough time to get there AND sleep in, and also it was our first "real" Legacy, so I'm sure people were wary. It was pretty clear from that thread (and the evolution thereof) that we were not the most experienced on the block.

Still, I hope those who did attend had fun, enjoyed themselves, and were angling for some more. And here it is! Check it out! We know what we're doing now! :P

Nail, meet hammer. Arriving in West Hollywood from southern OC by 11:30 means no Saturday night boozin. I'll try to make out for this, as it looks like it will be a good tourney!

Well, we're going to try out this way of doing things. If it doesn't work out, our next tournament will be Cut to X.

I'm sorry you don't like that. Hopefully others will not see it as much of a detraction.

And if they do... well... we'll see it in (lack of) attendance!

The problem with Swiss+1 is that it is random. I have very little control if I get 2nd or like 5th. That is really really stupid. Also I can go undefeated and not win the tournament, which is very flawed.

Swiss +1 is not good. Please do cut to Top 8 since I don't want a bad showing for any tournament in LA.

Hey Guys,

Thought I'd give you a quick update. I think it's significant enough to warrant a bump for the post.

I've procured the Seas and the Volcanic Islands, and you can see I've updated the conditions to reflect that. (edit: turns out the seas are both revised. Sorry for the confusion!) Tundras and Savannahs are on their way.

Quick aside; has anyone noticed the price of duals is skyrocketing right now?

Anyway, additionally, I think I've seriously sweetened the prize for #1 if we get our 32 players. I've added a choice of Mishra's Workshop, or a German FOIL Jace, The Mind Sculptor. (The Jace is subject to availability. Estimated delivery is 4/8-4/21. If we don't have it yet we'll happily give you a rain check for it, and you can come pick it up (or we'll send it out) the moment we receive it.)

I've noticed some people have been interested in holding all-cash tournaments, which is something I wouldn't be opposed to. Sadly I can't offer the 100% in, 100% back some are, but it'd be pretty close. (Hypothetical: 32 people, $25 entry each. Take in $800, subtract a very reasonable $75-$100 in costs, and give out $700-$725 Cash?) Let me know!

My cash tournaments would have a DCI Certified Judge (Level 1 or higher) every time. (Hence the costs.)

Anyway, hit me with feedback as always. Thanks!

I hear the parking is hard to find at the meters is it safe?

MelroseMusic&Comics
03-26-2011, 02:42 PM
Actually, that's a great question!

Parking can sometimes be tricky to find; it's West Hollywood. Because of this, we've been putting together what I feel is a very comprehensive parking guide for the area around our store. We want as many people as possible to come. The parking guide is not done yet, and I was hoping to finish it before I announced it, but I guess people are worried about parking.

The parking guide will have every side of every street in a 2-4 block radius of the store cataloged with times for parking, enforcement dates, places to park where one doesn't have to worry about moving, etc. It should be great! It'll be available in map form on our website by our next Legacy (the one after April 10th.)

As for how safe it is, we've been parking there for 20 years and so have our customers and we've never had a single problem. So I guess it's pretty safe! (Disclaimer: Lock your doors. :p)

MelroseMusic&Comics
04-02-2011, 10:45 PM
Alrighty! Got all the prizes in order, and received the Jace in plenty of time to give it away.

I've gotten my hands on all the prizes, and had time to physically inspect them all. They're all really nice, especially the top prizes. Here's a quick breakdown of conditions, as viewed by me... a man with an opinion.

Moat: Gorgeous. No visible flaws.
Mishra's Workshop: Really, really nice. Minor whitening around the corners; otherwise beautiful.
German Foil Jace, The Mind Sculptor: I don't think I've ever seen a mintier card. Seriously. I WANT it. But I can't have it. Sad...

Underground Seas: Both exquisite. One's white borders are very slightly yellowed, and there are maybe one or two very minor nicks along the back edges. Otherwise NM.
Tundras: Some discoloration along the edges, with whitening along the back edges on the cards. Otherwise great.
Volcanic Islands: NM other than very minor nicks here and there (no more than 2 per card) along the back edges of the card.
Savannahs: One's discolored along the edges slightly with some whitening around the back edges. The other is very nice, with one slight area of whitening along the back edge but otherwise great.

I still haven't found a judge for this event, so if you know someone or are interested, let me know. otherwise, come on down! Something tells me that if I get my 32 people there'll be extra, unlisted prizes for everyone involved..... ;)

I disagree. If you are going to read a boring rules document, read the Constitution, it will make you throw up just how many of your rights are being taken away.

You can read the Constitution from now until John Hancock's 500th birthday, it will not change a thing.

Read the MIPG, and you might win a game you wouldn't otherwise.

Well, luckily for Jacob, the vast majority of the US constitution does not apply within the store. Tthe MIPG does. :P

Hopefully we get a good turnout for this event! You may not believe it but I WANT to give out a Moat/Workshop/Jace! Let's do this!

Knowing the Constitution could keep you out of jail or being taken advantage of by our lovely government.

Also, Melrose is in the US, and the Constitution is the Highest Authority of the Land. Soooo I think it might apply in your store too. ;-)

Also, Melrose is in the US, and the Constitution is the Highest Authority of the Land. Soooo I think it might apply in your store too. ;-)

The constitution is a framework for a government; it describes a way for a government to form, create, and pass laws that the store has to then abide by. Things such as the right to free speech and right to unreasonable search and seizure apply only when the government is the one curtailing them; private entities can do whatever they like in regards to these things (examples: No free speech on college campuses or within private corporations, or being searched before you see a sneak peek of a movie as a condition to see said movie).

Anyway, just to let you guys know, your place is guaranteed only once you've paid for the event. We're expecting a pretty nice turnout for this, and so registering is not enough. You need to pay your entry fee before your space in the event is locked in. In that same vein, registering before 1.15PM is not enough to avoid the $25 fee. One must pay before 1.15pm to qualify for the $20 entry.

Let's get our tournament on!

Its rather silly to need some old ass piece of paper to tell you your rights and tell you how you are being taken advantage of. Just do what you want in spite of imagined authority and things will be fine. You are too damn young to be stressing out and acting as paranoid about your government as you do. You are not oppressed. You do not have to follow rules. Just be smart about it. For instance, if you are going to smoke weed, dont do it at the police department.

Many, many thanks to the 33 people that attended! And congrats to Liam and his shiny new foil German Jace, The Mind Sculptor! Guess you didn't need the constitution on your side for that one ;).

Top 8 -

1st - Liam with "TES" - German foil Jace
2nd - Chuck with No Show - 2x Revised Underground Sea
3rd - Joe with RUB... (Aether Vial/Venser, Shaper Savant/en-kors/Cephalid Illusionist) something? - 2x Revised Tundra
4th - Bryan with Painter's Stone - 2x Revised Volcanic Island
5th - Alvaro with Red Burn - 2x Revised Savannah
6th - Shai with Rock (?) - $50 Store Credit
7th - Hank with NO Zoo (?) - $50 Store Credit
8th - Jason with Dredge - $50 Store Credit

Will be posting top 8 decklists for this and the previous event by tomorrow (for reals!), and eventually the decklists for everyone at the events, but there's no timetable on that one yet.

Thanks to everyone for coming! We'll definitely be having more events like these! Stay tuned!

I played some friendly games with John afterwards, and he must've had Counterbalance in 1 out of 5 or 6 games. I think that card is angry with him for not running 4, so it hides from him.

This was my first time playing at Melrose, and I'll definitely be back. Parking was not a problem if you were willing to walk a block. The playing area was smallish, but there was enough other space in the store (and on the sidewalk, where the scenery was notably better) to keep it from ever feeling cramped. Singles prices were competitive, and the prize support was good all the way down. But most importantly, it was just a really chilled out environment with a really friendly staff.

Congrats to Melrose on achieving your Premiere/Advanced/Whatever status. Congrats to Liam on the win. And much respect to my fifth-round opponent, Jeff, who so loves the game that he actually gave me a high five when I turn-1'ed him on the play.
