View Full Version : Sylvan Library and Platinum Angel/Platinum Emperium

Say for whatever reason you have out a Sylvan Library and one of the above aforementioned fatties. Will you lose the game if you choose to keep the 2 extra cards. It seems to me with the Angel you would just go negative life, and the Emperium your life total wouldn't changte even though you paid the life?

You're wrong on both. You can not pay the life that you don't have. So you can't go below 0 via Sylvan Library with or w/o Platinum Angel. You still can go negative with opposing atacks, etc. So, once you're 3 life and below, you have to return the cards.
With Platinum Emerion, you just can't pay the life, therefore you have to return the cards. You can't even fetch with that guy in play, since that requires you to pay 1 life.

Answers to both questions are available on the Gatherer card info, BTW.

You can only pay life down to zero - you can't pay a negative number. If you have two life, you can't pay for Sylvan Libraray's effect.

If your life total can't change, you can't pay any life at all, no matter what your life total is.

This is somewhat related. If your opponent has a Platinum Emperion, can you play Invigorate's alternate cost?

If a cost would include causing you to gain life (like the alternative cost of an opponent's Invigorate does), that cost can't be paid.

Since we're on the subject of paying life in odd situations, if you have negative life and an effect has the cost of paying 'half' your life, it's 0, and you can pay that cost.
