Winter Orb + The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale

This seems like it would make any creature's existence for any prolonged period nearly impossible. Is there any reason why nobody has done this??? Of course crucible of worlds is required to perpetuate this against wasteland.

this seems awesome. super stax! that might require a 3rd tabernacle in the board though, but this seems like a great idea.

Probably because Winter Orb is symmetrical. It's easier to abuse Tabernacle with Waste-lock and Ports.

Actually it isn't; it's much more mana-intensive (also taking into consideration Tabernacle doesn't even produce mana) and a deck predicated on using lands such as City of Traitors, Ancient Tomb, etc. would be a much more suitable fit with a combo like this.

I wonder how that would work in testing with something like Thran Turbine (with Port, that is). You could even use that with Candelabra to untap lands.

I actually had this combo in a Tezzeret/Wildfire deck that I was testing (promising). It is not in the sleeved version because Tabernacle would cost me a kidney, and I do enjoy having a spare one of those. The deck plays mana artifacts so winter orb doesn't hurt that much.

Winter Orb was one of the first cards I fell in love with when I started playing during Revised era. I've been a douche bag prison player at the core ever since.

Don't forget that Winter Orb was errata'ed to include "As long as Winter Orb is untapped" as a condition so tapping it during the opponent's EOT is an option. Relic Barrier?

Winter Orb + Tabernacle isn't bad, but when you're going to die to Emrakul, Progenitus, or Dragon Stompy it isn't so great. It rapes swarms which is likely a bigger problem than single, game winning, threats I suppose.

Lands that play nice with Winter Orb:
Ghost Town
Undiscovered Paradise
Forsaken City (Yes I like Stasis too)

Obviously, your own creatures don't have synergy with Winter Orb + Tabernacle unless you're using artifact mana in tandem with Winter Orb which you may be doing if using the Orb.

IMO Winter Orb is crap with Port. Sword of Feast and FamineSeedborn Muse? Maybe, but doubtful.

I'm not so into the combo in this thread because imo the best decks that utilize Winter Orb shouldn't have much of a problem with creatures considering you're likely choking their resources already since in order to justify the inclusion of Winter Orb, you're making a deck that is denying them their resources. Maybe I'm wrong.
Cool thread. Needs more Winter Orb!

It's a two card combo that doesn't win the game.

Winter Orb also works well with Ghostly Prison, Armageddon, Magus of the Tabernacle, basically the deck Armageddon Stax in general.

It's a two card combo that doesn't win the game.

But each part is perfectly fine if not great on its own, which is not true of any two card combo that does win the game.

Winter Orb is fine / great on it's own? I wish it was, as it's an old favourite of mine. However, the curve is just too low for it to have a worthwhile impact these days.

Tabernacle on it's own, meh.

Even as a combo it's pretty unimpressive, as you still need to have an answer to the creature I'm attacking you with each turn.

I played a deck for a long time with this combo. It was actually pretty competitive (several top eights) until goyf got printed. Opponent could just keep one goyf alive and bash my face in. Goyf is pretty damn prevelant :-/

I ran it like 6 months ago and it was something like...

13 Island
3 Tabernacle
4 Port
2 Academy ruins
3 Petrified Field <- Fuck you wasteland!

4 lodestone golem
4 impulse
4 worb
4 propaganda
2 echoing truth
3 tangle wire
4 mana leak
4 FOW
3 relic to progenitus
4 relic barrier

sb
4 Pneedle
4 Chalice
7 hibernation, chill, beb, 3sphere, rebuild, that thing that makes a player have 2 upkeeps.....

Its not awful but it has a ways to go before its competitive. Also it has trouble winning on time. Overall I can't see it making a comeback. But I'm a pretty bad player so the deck might actually have more potential than I think. I would really like that since its basically my favorite deck ever.

The problem with a combo like Winter Orb + The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale is that you need a Prison shell to run it in and Prison shells are very vulnerable to a single big creature that swings FTW. Generally a single Tarmogoyf sets a fast enough clock to defeat the Prison deck. With Winter Orb and The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, the Tarmogoyf player can still pay for its upkeep since Winter Orb allows the untapping of one land. Therefor you need to run it with Propaganda or Ghostly Prison, which can be ok, but generally these are inconsistent and therefor bad decks.

I actually ran relic to progenitus just to keep goyf small. Of course its also randomly good against dredge and it can cycle if its truly going to be useless in a match.
