Bonus article this week!

The top 8 from last weekends SCG Legacy Open was just an awesome cross-section of decks, including some we haven't seen in while, so I wanted to write another article taking a look at what happened. I also try to point out some cards and decks that can beat the strategies that did well last weekend, to put you ahead of the copy-cats.

This article is inadvertently similar to Pat Chapin's from today, but if anything I think that should help emphasize how cool this top 8 was, and how much value you can get from understanding the decks involved.

Next week, probably more Legacy. This format has its hooks in me pretty good...

Good read as usual! But yeah this Top 8 was one of the most interesting to see. These past few weeks just keep proving how wide open this format is, and that you can literally sleeve up what you want to, (Cephalid Breakfast was exciting!!!) Looks like a fun time for Counterbalance to step back in so probably a good time to pick up Merfolk and Goblins again.

I especially agree on the Null Rod part. That card is the nuts right now.

Yeah I dropped my Meandeck MUD deck because Null Rod is just that crippling. And right now, it just hurts so many decks.

Love the article, I came to the same assessment as you did, counterbalance would definitely have a great time against all those decks in the T8 (other than merfolk). URG balance with Grims and firespout seems like the ideal deck to play in that T8.

But then again, yours is free so the cost efficiency of your article is infinitely better!

I'm happy I still have my Null Rods from the days I played Null Rod Zoo in Vintage. I'm not as happy with them as I'm unhappy that I didn't buy those Bazaars or LED's back then, but oh well...

Thank you Matt for another free dose of Legacy analysis. I appreciate that you continue to write weekly about our favorite format!

I think one thing that is underrated is how popular combo is here in Los Angeles. If you look at a lot of the local Top 8's, you will see a majority of them have 1-4 combo decks. The interesting part is that the Counterbalance players get beat out by the extraordinary amount of Merfolk.

Great article as always, free article but as good as premium. Lorddotm is right though, the Los Angeles meta is not indicative of the real meta. We've had counterbalance here with good players but the combo guys still win.

Who the hell let a Burn deck get to T8? Were there only 8 players in the tourney?

To be fair, it's Patrick Sullivan, who's been playing various iterations of burn and sligh and such for a decade. If there were one person in the world for whom burn would be the correct deck choice, it would be him.

The same guy who also won a Standard open with RDW.

Actually, there were only 5 people in the tournament.
