What the hell is that card in between "The" and "Source"?

You get to vote for 4-5 (potentially) new cards in the banner. No duals, no fetches, no basic lands that aren't Island.

Force of Will, Wasteland, Brainstorm, Tarmogoyf, Swords to Plowshares, and Aether Vial are staying.

How this is going to work:
- List 4 or 5 cards you think are representative of legacy and representative of as many top decks as possible.
- Something like Ponder does the same thing as Brainstorm and is in the same decks, so it's probably not something to vote for. Same thing for Path to Exile.
- Use this format: "1) Island 2) Knight of the Reliquary 3) Thoughtsieze 4) Sensei's Divining Top 5) Spell Pierce"
- Your #1 vote gets 5 points, your #2 gets 4, and so on.
- Feel free to discuss in the same post you vote.

For reference, here's the top 50ish eligible cards from the nine post-Survival SCG Open T16s - yes, you can vote for cards that aren't here:

Honesty, I think we should just replace SotF with Green Sun's Zenith. The banner itself is cool as it is.

Looks like a limited edition Dark Ritual.

Not as cool as this:

My votes;

1 - Sensei's Divining Top: Recognized as one of the quintessential cards of the format. The reason that counterbalance is on the banner in the first place, and still played heavily in Junk while countertop decks are a bit weak at the moment.
2 - Dark Confidant: It took a while, but confidant is finally starting to see the level of play that's made it a staple across all formats. When you play black, chances are you're picking the color so you can run this sweet two drop.
3 - Knight of the Reliquary: Pretty much the single reason Junk is a tier 1 deck. Also turbocharges bant and zoo to higher power levels. The best green creature in legacy since goyf.
4 - Jace the Mind Sculptor: I wish I could vote him #1 because of him being a boss and all, he's still not really indicative of legacy quite yet. But he'll get there soon enough, I'm sure.
5 - Ponder: Part of the reason blue combo can be so consistent is the new crop of 1 mana cantrips that got released within only the last few years. The history it has in the format means it beats out preordain (which is still too new) for the last spot.

1) Lion's Eye Diamond - Represent Combo
2) Sensei's Divining Top - Represent Control
3) Dark Confidant - Best 2 drop beside Tarmogoyf
4) Hymn to Tourach - The best 2 for 1 in the game
5) Knight of Reliquary - The best 3 drop in legacy

1. Goblin Lackey

Goblins has consistently been a DTB for longer than most other decks have existed. Turn 1 lackey still dictates many deck-building constraints. I won't give votes to anything else.

I think Top should beat Dark Confidant. It's played in more decks than Confidant, including but in no way limited to CounterTop, which itself is an incredibly varied archetype. Dark Confidant is awesome and appeals to me more than Top, but Top has been and still is such an important part of Legacy that it absolutely deserves to place first. I'm surprised Counterbalance got chosen over it in the past.

Jace is undoubtedly very powerful, but the card is quite new, so I reckon it should wait a bit.

Will the same number of total spaces remain constant?

I agree, for one, that Lackey should be on there as an auto-include. It's the only red card, and also represents Tribal in general, but more specifically, Goblins :P

We might shorten it to 10 (from 11) if it isn't close. Six slots are locked, so 4-5 up for grabs.

Lackey wasn't an auto only because it's been awhile since goblins has really performed well - merfolk way outperformed it in the SCGs.

Aether Vial
Emrakul, the Aeons Torn
Wasteland
Lion's Eye Diamond
Swords to Plowshares
Brainstorm
Force of Will
Hymn to Tourach
Lightning Bolt
Tarmogoyf

I'm fairly certain that that covers 95% and up of Legacy.

Actually, I'm having difficulty thinking of a deck besides Enchantress that doesn't run at least one of those cards.

eta: Only 7 of the 160 decks to top 8 a Legacy Open in the past year didn't have one of the above cards-1 Enchantress, 1 Elves sans Emrakul for some reason, 2 Affinity and 3 LED-less Ichorid- so yeah, a bit more than 95%.

Why Hymn to Tourach over Dark Confidant?

Other than that, I think IBA got it wrapped up.

As for the art:

Sensei's Divining Top - Only one art
Aether Vial - The original from Darksteel
Emrakul - Prerelease Promo, because I see that more often than the regular version
Wasteland - Tempest art, its the classic one
Lion's Eye Diamond - Only one art
Swords to Plowshares - The Alpha art. Enough said
Brainstorm - The Mercadian Masque art, that art also reminds me of Super Jace for some reason.
Force of Will - Only one art
Hymn to Tourach - The one by Liz Danforth art because it looks more ritualist than the rest of themDark Confidant - Only one art

Snow-Covered Island from Ice Age. Best. Island. Ever. (but I do love my Snow-Covered lands so maybe I'm biased)

Goblins won the first couple SCGs of 2011 in the post-Survival era. This was only a few months ago. It's not like it hasn't put up results in a year. I think Goblins is still a deck to beat (or at least to watch). If you bring a deck to a Legacy tourney, whatever deck it might be, you still need to make sure that your deck doesn't lose to a Lackey connecting on turn two.

1. Hurloon Minotaur
2. Hypnotic Specter
3. Humility
4. Hundroog
5. Hymn to Tourach (all four pictures)

But really, the list we're presented to choose from is biased against cards that you only really need to play a single copy of to get the best effect such as Moat, Tendrils of Agony, Progenitus, Ad Nauseam, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale and so on. These cards are basically all iconic of the format but aren't really represented from the sample size becuase it slants towards cards that everyone is going to play four of.

Why Hymn to Tourach over Dark Confidant?

You could go either way, but there are and have been decks like Team America/Eva Green etc. that use Hymn but don't use Dark Confidant. Hymn to Tourach is just a ridiculously powerful card that's constantly under-rated in this format. There's a recurring trend of Hymn falling out of popularity only to smash up a Grand Prix Top 8. I think it's comparable to Force of Will in terms of cards that decks aren't built around, but make an entire range of decks actually viable. It deserves more respect than it gets.

1) Sword of Fire and Ice - the art is great, iconic in its own way, and just a great equipment
2) Umezawa's Jitte - same reasons
3) Hymn to Tourach
4) Qasali Pridemage
5) Stoneforge Mystic - she is starting to make an impact on the format, and the art is just too cool

(Is there a black-bordered printing of that card?) If Island somehow makes the cut, we should start a separate thread to discuss it. If it's going to be a group decision, I think we should put aside aesthetics and go with iconic. Like:

Or

The basic land in Ravnica is amazing (I particularly like the Martiniere's swamps), but I think this is the superior Island:

Not really. As much as I feel the card is over-hyped, the card will carve it's name into the legacy metagame. It's spot is warranted, especially with the upcoming GP, as everying is hyping the card as the second coming.

Nihil Credo

If Mental Misstep ends up having been massively overhyped, it will nevertheless remain notable for having been so legendarily overhyped, to the point of having been put on a playmat before it was even legal. Self-fulfilling prophecies FTW.

Currently there are 12 cards represented in the banner. If I were to pick out 12 cards for a post-Misstep banner, they would be:

Mad props, - Mental Misstep, + IA Brainstorm would be sooooo awesome and truly reprents Legacy.

Also, Stoneforge Mystic has to be there. I won't mind either Tarmogoyf or Dark Confidant go. Maybe there is a day Snapcaster Mage would substitute another card.

Green Sun's Zenith. It's not a flashy card. But it has had as big of an impact on the format as Misstep, people just didn't notice it because it's not blue. But without GSZ, NO RUG doesn't exist. Zoo is half a tier worse than it is now. Maverick is too inconsistent. GSZ has subtly shaped this format more than Stoneforge Mystic and Jace 2.0 combined.

BLASPHEMER!!! No Hymn art is as good as the Wolf Hymn. Wolf Hymns were only made by grinding a dozen of each of the other Hymns and then pressing all that Hymn-y goodness into a single card, then baptizing the new piece of cardboard in high end champagne. They are the saffron of the Hymn world.
