Hi guys,

I have looked around, and can't find a discussion for the deck I am proposing, so apologies if this is a repeat.

I actually looked at it for extended, but Legacy is a lot more interesting, albeit with a higher caliber of deck, so let's see how the discussion progresses.

The main combo involves using the New Phyrexia white creature, Puresteel Paladin (PP), and Surestrike Trident (ST).
Although the trident is an incredibly underused card (with good reason... it's rubbish!), I think with PP it is more than playable.

The combo I have initially thought of is:
PP + ST + Puresight Merrow

For 1 mana it deals 2 damage. Nothing exciting, I admit, but it gets more interesting with any number of cards: [N.B. Grim Lavamancer is used competitively, and has drawbacks too]

Quest for the Pure flame;
- Suddenly it deals 4 damage for 1 mana
Boost instant / sorcery / permanent
- Anything from Might of oaks to glorious anthem
Infect
- Trident says that "Creature deals damage" so 2 poison damage is equivalent to 4 regular damage. Therefore, using tainted strike or glistening oil .

Early stages of deck concepts, but any thoughts would be appreciated

Couple problems. Puresight Merrow and Surestrike Trident are both total ass without the combo. Second, you'll need metalcraft, which means 2 artifacts in play in addition to the trident. This is a ton of hoops to jump through for what amounts to infinite Shocks. It would make a pretty awesome casual deck, though, since you just run weenie type things, Stoneforge Mystic, etc. Go to town on your poor kitchen table play-group. But I don't think it's competitive.

Would be cute to use the Puresight Merrow with Paradise Mantle.

That gives you an infinite tap/untap effect and the ability to exile your library.

Not sure what you would use it for, but it's potentially infinite right?
That's always fun.

Edit: Only thing I could think of is Wake Thrasher :\

How exactly is this better than the Puresteel + Sunforger combo, which should pretty much win the game right on the spot, depending on the variant?

Interesting responses guys, thanks for the feedback. A couple of points, having thought about the deck more.

I don't think metalcraft is even remotely a problem. In Legacy artifacts are just part of the game for many decks. Anything from mox's to artifact lands to creatures, metalcraft is an issue that is easy to overcome.

@Barook:
You're right, that is an easier combo (which I admit I didn't read). My search on this forum was for the trident. It is worth noting that the idea for this combo is designed to win on the spot too. Perhaps with a 5/2 merrow, with 4 untapped mana for the win.

@kusumoto
Interesting combo, (similar to Myr Galvanizer x2 & Palladium Myr).

The deck itself may well be casual, but I thought putting it out to the aethos, more experienced deck-builders might come up with something interesting.

I will make the deck at home, and see what I come up with.

Happy Deck-Building guys!
