So it turns out that the Internet does affect real life?
Weird.

I wonder if there will be any legal action taken against Matignon. As for the DCI penalties, it seems fair.

What did I learn from this?
Don't trust the French, especially those named Guillaume.
Also Pros with access to sensitive information before the rest of the field? Really?

So when does Wizards stop giving so many people info on new sets? I mean they make a big deal when a set is spoiled, and we've learned that some people don't give a shit about signing an NDA, yet Wizards still lets all this info about new cards float about. I'll be very interested to see if legal action follows because at some point Wizards has to be held to some accountability for letting so many people have access to this "top secret" stuff that they "don't want" spoiled. Wizards can't play the victim card every time a leak happens. (well, they can legally...but you see where I'm going right?)
Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me.

My thoughts exactly. I didn't read where it said how long in advance of the set's release they are given the "Godbook". I wonder how long these people have access to this kind of thing before anyone else is allowed to even see it.
People who write articles for websites or magazines have been getting early spoilers since the beginning of time, a lot of which are top players. WotC doesn't like to talk about it, but it's how things have always worked.
Does it give people an edge? Absolutely. Does it get shared with friends? WotC can't think otherwise. Does WotC think the marketing boost is worth it? Obviously they do.

I figured that was so, but I wonder how long in advance they are given this. Seems like it would have a huge impact on T2(which I don't care about) to have the world's "best" players getting information on what new things are coming and what decks to play before anyone else has a clue. It just seems like a fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather, only Pacquiao took off his gloves was given a baseball bat before the opening bell rang. It's just strange how "high profile" people are given an unnecessary advantage. I'm not bitching, I just think this is pretty funny. You'd think these guys would be smart enough not to screw this up.

This is all incredibly stupid and nobody should care.

It seems like this could also give them an edge in the secondary market if important combo pieces are coming in the new set.

In this case, you can see it was about a month before release, or two weeks before official spoilers. That matches up pretty well with what I've heard in the past for magazines. Not sure about websites.

Then this is not near as bad as I had initially thought. I figured they were given the new set information 3-6 months in advance. I always assume the worst case scenario.

Having the information of every card in a new set one month prior to release is pretty much a nonexistant advantage.

This. Even much earlier it isnt too breaking, unless they find some new combo that they don't think anyone else will ever find. Plus, the full set is spoiled like two weeks before and the Pre-release has them out a week before they are legal anyway.

Dude, knowing what's coming matters. It lets you test early and helps you stay a step ahead of opponents as you've gotten your testing in already. They may end up playing clunky decks for the first few weeks before they iron out the problems, but you're full steam ahead right out of the gates. You've already tested all the possible archtypes and their "suppposed improvements" from cards in the new set. You already dismissed the bad decks from the onset and will be playing highly tuned lists from Release day onwards. Saying that early information is not an advantage is ridiculous. Pros will make the most of any kind of edge they are given, and this is a pretty blatant edge. Like a Samurai blade kinda edge.

I will say this, for constructed play, this set doesnt really cause that much conflict. It wont be til the First Set of Innistrad that it would make a huge difference. I am not saying its not some kind of an advantage but to say its so incredibly great that all of the people who get the data will storm the top table is asinine.
However, in Limited I do agree that it will give them extreme amounts of advantage.

Considering that cross-Atlantic lawsuits are a pain the ass, that France in particular isn't the most friendly country for such purposes, and that Matignon's personal assets are probably pocket change for Hasbro, I'm betting on no.
EDIT: Actually, they could easily have WotC France do the suing, so the first two reasons do not really apply.

You sound like you have never tested for a big constructed event, do you?

Wizards' hypocrisy is sickening. You can't say you want to keep something secret and then share it with the French, too.

Looks like they could have been punished harder by Wizards, if they would have engaged in a lawsuit. Fortunately that didn't happen, I think the measure of the punishment is appropriate. OTOH, Wizards should just spoil the damn sets asap, we need as much time as possible to test all the possible new broken cards.

No they don't share it with the French. They share it with our national magazine writers. By the way he is the new world champion. The problem did come from other guy, especially someone that EVERYBODY dislike in France (he is b-boy on forums...).
We just hope that people that scanned japanese cards will also be punished in order to be fair.
it's a pity for Wafo tapa. He is the nicest and the best player in the world. He gave these informations to another friend of him, only because he is too kind and naive.

An enticing story, a fair penalty, and there is no need to crush them further.
