Breaking in Legacy again - Cardpool/Deck Choice Questions!

Hello Source,

I´ve planning on getting back into Legacy, after a break of about one year. Sadly I`ve sold out most of my cards so I have to build up a new card pool or single deck. I really liked Vial Goblins and mentioned, starting with them again. I`ve readed most of the goblin thread and my questions on it are: Will Goblins still be a good deck in the future? And will lists with Lightning Bolts and Ports still viable?
If you would recommend against Gobos I`ve thoughted of building up a G/B/W - Pool, because I like Junk. But what other good decks can I build with that pool? When I looked at tc.decks I haven`t noted another deck, which is really relevant in todays meta.

Other decks I would like to play are:
Landstill Team America and Blue tempo decks like New Horizons and so...., but I haven`t enough money for offering a U-Pool.
Further I would be really thankful, if you could recommend me some other viable 1.5 decks, which are a bit on the budget side and having a chance on a tourney.

I'm personally not a fan of Goblins and I think the meta has to be right for it to do well. I wouldn't recomend it just because I don't enjoy playing it, but that's just personal preference.

The great thing about Junk is that it uses a bunch of cards that are in other decks. You won't be able to make something else entirely off the card pool you acquire for it but it's definitely a good start. Knight of the Reliquary, Tarmogoyf, Dark Confidant, Wasteland, Swords to Plowshares, and Sensei's Divining Top are all played in several decks, including the blue decks you mentioned wanting to play.

For comaraatively cheap decks you can take a look at the deck I just made Top 8 with in Charlotte. It's Wb creature based control. It's kind of a mix of Deadguy Ale, much less discard, and Death and Taxes, no funny tricks with clunky 3 drops. The cards that make it into several other decks are Dark Confidant, Aether Vial, StP, Umezawa's Jitte, and to some extent Mother of Runes.

I usually recommend Merfolk, but the prices of FoW/Wasteland spiked a few months ago in case you haven't noticed. It now costs around $700 to build from scratch and sadly Legacy has become unfriendly to players who are new or getting back into the game.

Since you seem like a nice guy who likes aggro, here's what I recommend as a viable budget 1.5 deck with a good chance of landing in the top 8-16s.

I have a higher octane of this build available but of course it costs a bit more. I'm guessing somebody will eventually recommend Dredge and it's not a good idea post NPH, unless you have LEDs. In which case, playing Belcher or ANT seems better.

Thanks for your answers. I think I should go with Goblins, like I´ve planned. The reasons therefor are, that Goblins are a really solid deck for the price, where I can´t get anything other I would like to play. A special questions for Goblins: Could I play Lightning Bolts in a list with Warren Instigator and Chrome Mox, or wouldn`t it work, because of two much non Goblinspells, which weakens ringleader to much? Here`s the list I`ve thoughted of building up. What do you think of it?

I think my beef with gobs is the replay value, as there are less cards run in goblins that you would run in another red deck. NO Bant would be a pricey way to start, but there's more replay value in the cards/colors all around which will make it easier to get into another deck more easily afterward. Zoo is also good for the same reason, but not as much so since you won't be running things like force of will, brainstorm, daze, etc.

Yeah, that`s the reason why I`m struggeling with Goblins. The only staple I could use for another deck is wasteland, even I wouldn `t have a second use for the Badlands. Maybe I go up with the Countertop Superfriends deck, which offers all staples for a U/W pool and from that Landstill isn`t far away. Completly different deck from Gobos, but I always liked the two opposites Hard Control and Aggro :laugh:

A solid piece of advice:

Save to build the actual deck you WANT to. Dont settle for anything, as ove rtime it'll take away from your experience with the format.

Play to your own strengths, build a deck around your prefered playing style that also has good game against most of the field.

Goblins generally do well, and if you feel comfortable with the deck, have fun!

Reading is another mandatory. Find all the Legacy articles on the internet, which days they're normally publsihed and follow them.

Pretty much agree with jandax. You want a deck that is strong but fits your playstyle. Considering just about any good deck is going to be pricey and goblins is not all that much cheaper since it requires wastelands and ports still I would build Merfolk if I were you. Force of Will and Wasteland will always be useful staples to have, no duals to worry about, and all the lords and what not are really cheap.

Hmm Goblins isn`t cheap at all, but one of the most cheapest decks, with what you`re able beating most other decks of the format. Annother point is that I`m familiar with the deck, but like you said, not good for building a pool. Annother deck I`ve considering is T.E.S. I find it really interesting, because it`s very demanding and isn´t too expensive. But learning to play this deck right, is very difficult and same like with goblins you don`t get flexible pool out of it, I think. :rolleyes:
Playing folks would be reasonably, but I can`t help my self I don`t like it. Thank you all for your helpful advices! :smile:

Iim getting back in after 4 years off so Im in the same boat as you. I can really only build cheap stuff so i have dredge (which I kept) and affinity (which was still in extended when I quit). lucky for me, I dont really like playing blue so i can still build up fairly cheap. Im gonna build combo elf as well cuz it just looks like a ton of fun.
