Slag Fiend is just the kind of card that scratches just where I itch. Here's a little something I put together...

4 Slag Fiend
4 Goblin Bushwhacker
4 Kuldotha Rebirth
4 Shrapnel Blast
4 Chromatic Star
4 Terrarion
4 Panic Spellbomb
4 Wanderer's Twig
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Galvanic Blast
4 Lotus Petal
4 Darksteel Citadel
4 Great Furnace
8 Mountain

I just started foolin' around with it, but it seems pretty fun.

Me too!

Goblin Grenade!
Having another 5 damage should be big. But I don't know if there'll be enough gobbo's to sacc.
I'm tinkering around with Goblin Welder and perhaps one of the wellsprings.

I hadn't considered bushwacker, but that might just be the thing. thx.

You might want to try Vault Skirge. He's really aggressive, flies, and is also an artifact.

Vault Skirge is a good idea, the deck is dangerously low on creatures. That may be a substitute for Galvanic Blast. Although, the deck kinda' screams for Ravager, but I'm trying to keep this budget and not turn it into Slagffinity

Not that I want to encourage something like this, but wouldn't this being a good fit for Mishra's Bauble and Urza's Bauble

I was thinking of those cards, but the slowtrip thing turned me off. I took out Wanderer's Twig because it doesn't seem to do a heck of a lot of good. I replaced the twig with Vault Skirge and still have Galvanic Blast in there. I think Panic Spellbomb on the bubble.
I haven't been able to get consistent draws with the deck, so I don't know where to go with it.

Needs more Atog and maybe Arcbound Ravager.

If Mox Opal wasn't non-budget it'd be perfect. Maybe try Devastating Summons. Its pretty much the straight nuts with Bushwhacker.

Opal would replace Lotus Petal nicely. I thought about Summons with my original deck list, and as I test the deck I'm starting to think it belongs in there. It is such a fun card, too.

Ichor Wellspring
Mycosynth Wellspring

Are pretty much the best 2 cards ever printed for this deck ... besides maybe moxes.

Just looking at this deck I think I like it already, lots of fun little synergies you can pull off.

I am about to start playtesting this on Cockatrice:

Creatures

4 Slag Fiend
4 Goblin Bushwhacker
4 Kuldotha Rebirth
4 Devastating Summons

Removal

4 Galvanic Blast
4 Shrapnel Blast
4 Lightning Bolt

Slag Fiend Fuel

4 Ichor Wellspring
4 Mycosynth Wellspring

Mana

4 Mox Opal
4 Lotus Petal
4 Darksteel Citadel
4 Great Furnace
8 Mountain

The Opal's and Petal's pull double duty as Slag Fiend fuel as well.

Salvage Titan? It has great synergy with stars and wellsprings and it can put a lot of artifacts in the yard quickly. The return to your hand is optional.

I have played this card to a top 8 finish in Vintage. The problem is that you guys are trying to build around the card, which is simply not the best way to design a deck. I had a thought experiment with baubles but it's just not the best approach to deck design.

It sucks because whenever you don't draw into a Slagfiend/Atog, your deck does nothing. It can't handle creature removal at all and 1 moat = GG. You are relying too much on Slag Fiend and Atog. Also, Mental Misstep on Kuldotha Rebirth, really really sux so you need protection for it. I would consider replacing Bushwacker for Mental Misstep, so you don't run into missteps, thoughtseizes and plows.

I would consider removing devastating summons as well, as it requires you to geddon yourself for 2 creatures that are easily outclassed by knight and goyf.

The top 8 I got with this card was as a sideboard card in Red Stax. This, goblin welder and kuldotha phoenix were my answers to sideboard hate / artifact removal. Played it alongside Smokestack and in those matches, Slag Fiend became 10/10 and easily won the game for me.

Just for reference, I ran this main deck with 4 slag fiends sideboard:
3 Tangle Wire
3 Smokestack
4 Thorn of Amethyst
4 Sphere of Resistance
4 Lodestone Golem
4 Goblin Welder
1 Kuldotha Phoenix
2 Karn, Silver Golem
2 Crucible of Worlds
3 Null Rod
5 Moxen
1 Black Lotus
1 Sol Ring
1 Mana Crypt
4 Bazaar of Baghdad
4 Mishra's Workshop
4 Barbarian Ring
3 Mountain
3 Wasteland
1 Strip Mine
1 Tolarian Academy
2 Ancient Tomb

Unfortunately, I don't see how this deck can be ported to legacy properly
