Phyrexian Metamorph question

Just a quick question that came up in a casual game.

I have Deathrender equipped to a creature that's hitting the graveyard. The equipment triggers and I put Phyrexian Metamorph into play and attached to the sword, but I choose the Metamorph to copy a noncreature artifact.

What happens?

This can't happen as described. Since Phyrexian Metamorph is a creature card, it can indeed be put into play by Deathrender. However, you choose what it is copying as it enters the battlefield, not when it enters the battlefield. If you choose to copy a noncreature artifact, deathrender simply won't be attached to it, since it won't be a creature by the time it enters the battlefield.
