Some friends of mine started to get back into Magic and I wanted to build a new deck for the occasion. I want a deck that can stand its ground in multiplayer but still not be dead in the water to other casual-ish decks. Our "metagame" is mostly tribal (elves, slivers, beasts, soldiers), combo-control (Jokulhaups, 5c "sunburst", Astral Slide with LftL), and other random aggro decks. Since I'm the guy usually piloting the blue decks, I figured I'd switch it up this time around and build a more aggressive deck.
Here's what I have so far:
//Dudes - 19
4 Wild Nacatl
4 Kird Ape/Loam Lion
4 Qasali Pridemage
4 Werebear
3 Knight of the Reliquary (most likely going to grab a 4th)
//Spells - 14
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Lightning Helix
4 Path to Exile
2 Harrow
//Lands - 21
1 Arid Mesa
1 Scalding Tarn
6 Terramorphic Expanse/Evolving Wilds
2 Naya Panorama
4 Forest
4 Plains
2 Mountain
1 Sejiri Steppe (is this the best utility land to grab?)
which leaves 6 open slots with the deck as it is now.
So, what I wanted to have was a deck that could be aggressive early on while still being able to hold its own against swarms of tribal lords and other random beef. I also wanted to not be completely dead to a board sweeper like Jokulhaups.
The plan is to play fast creatures that get big quick like Nacatl and Loam Lion/Kird Ape, while saving creatures like Werebear for the late game. Knight of the Reliquary seems pretty obvious in a deck that not only wants to get threshold but also runs 10 fetches. I think I'm going to be sticking with Loam Lion over Kird Ape because it stretches my already terrible manabase way less.
Lightning Bolt, Path to Exile, and Lightning Helix are three of the best removal spells in these colors, so they're automatically in. Harrow is there to both color fix and to dump more cards into the graveyard to help with Werebear and KotR.
Without even playing the deck I know that I'm going to have a hard time getting Threshold, essentially making Werebear just a Myr the first 5-6 turns, but I don't know of a better creature for the cost that doesn't completely suck in either the beginning or end game. I also know that I'm probably going to lose pretty hard to a resolved Jokulhaups unless I run Life from the Loam or Caller of the Claw or something.
If I keep Werebear and the Threshold theme that fits so well with dumping lands into the graveyard, Mystic Enforcer (remember him?) seems like it would fit in really well. I just don't know how I could dump cards into the graveyard faster without adding blue.
I know optimally I'd want to have Zen fetches and Rav duals at the least, but I don't want to spend much money on fetches until Zen rotates of Standard, and I don't want to buy Rav duals unless I know I can get them for real cheap, so I'm stuck with Terramorphics and Evolving Wilds. If I can get Rav duals cheap I'll buy the Mirage fetches but until then I'm sticking to basics.
I know I'm potentially missing a ton of stuff, partially because I'm terrible at deckbuilding for multiplayer. I'm open to any and all suggestions. I don't really want to spend more than $50 more than what I've already spent on the above cards, so just keep suggestions cheap. Thanks!
