View Full Version : Decks to Beat Update

We need to update the Deck to Beat and Established deck sections of this website.

New Horizons is not really a deck anymore, neither is Counterbalance anything. However Bug/Team America are both real decks, Zoo is arguable, but I still don't think it is good enough to be in deck to beats. Also I think the Hive Mind is now an established deck.

Goblins is also pretty dead, so lets archive the locked thread and then move the live one to Established decks. TES and ANT are both established decks as well.

There should also be a separation between Bant Aggro and Natural Order Bant, though I think there should just be an [Archetype] Natural Order thread, and we can put RUG and Bant in there.

Zoo had the second most people after day 2, and one in the top 8.

But yeah, an Updated is needed

Maybe it would be an idea to just merge the established and decks to beat section? There are so many viable decks in legacy, and perhaps with an exception of Merfolk, they aren't separated by a large margin in popularity. With the constant meta shifts caused by bannings and new sets, doing so, would save the admins a lot of work, and save us, the users, from having to check to distinct sub-forums.

I don't know what purpose the deck to beat section even serves. I doesn't represent any given meta, as it is compiled based on tournament data from around the world. Can I use it before attending a SCG Open? Probably not. Their meta shifts so fast no one can keep an up-to-date list. Can I use it before attending my local game shop's bi-weekly tournaments? No. People play what they can afford or finds fun. My point is, the list only show cases the most globally played deck, but such information doesn't serve any functional purpose.

I remember back in the days, they used to call this strategy: "Secret Force".

Then all these hipster magic kids showed up with their planeswalkers...

But back on topic; Merfolk, Team America, NO-based decks and Dredge should be there.

Well, it's impossible to make a deck-to-beat list for each person's individual meta. It's also more likely that you will face Merfolk than Aluren at any given tournament anywhere in the world. The deck-to-beat list, while not always perfect, represents the decks that you are most likely to face at an average meta.

If your meta has a lot of decks that aren't on that list, then you can search through the established decks forum. However, since most people face off against decks-to-beat, that forum serves as a nice shortcut. Combining the threads just makes it less convenient for everyone since there are more threads to search through. If anything, we should have more subdivisions so that it's easier to search for certain decks.

As far as I know, the decks on the list are determined based on aggregate statistical data taken over a number of high profile tournaments. This seems like the fairest way, especially considering that people from all over the world use this forum.

While they share many cards, the strategy is completely different. I also second the idea of a thread for Natural Order separately. (including NO Elves, NO RUG, and NO Bant)

To be honest, it's been some time since the last update. The real last update was when U/G Madness was made Vengevine Survival, moved to DtB (without any other change), and then moved to Estabilished after the banning of Survival.

I believe I started a thread like this one already, and not even the top8 decklists were being updated

If I recall correctly, it started after deckcheck.net going down. IMO, it could now be TC decks: http://www.thecouncil.es/tcdecks/formato.php?format=Legacy

I'm going to third this as well. The decks look different only slightly but they play significantly differently.

Goblins recently placed in a GP IIRC, so I guess they can stay in the EDTB.

Are you sure that goblins are pretty dead deck right now? I dont think so . . . . day 1 of gp providence one goblin deck there is undefeated. Its not dead but people are not playing that deck as compared before, but its still a competitive one and still a tier 1 legacy deck since its early beginnings.

DTB/Established should not be based on performance at a handful of large events. I believe it used to be based on some mathemagics involving percentage of field vs. placement over the last several months on Deckcheck. CDR probably knows, he is some kind of math person.

Koby

So how are decks selected for the DTBF?

Rather than relying on arbitrary selection or decision-making based on conjecture which can be tainted by personal bias, decks are selected for the DTBF based on their performance at recent, large, competitive Legacy tournaments. Decks which make up a very large portion of the metagame are considered DTB's. Decks which are less prevalent but appear multiple times are considered DTW's. Archetypes which appear multiple times are considered ATW's.

The data used for selection is based upon Top 8's from the most recent Legacy tournaments with 33 or more players. European, Japanese, and other non-American tournament data is included in this process, because there is a thriving, well-developed Legacy community in places other than America, and their results are relevant.

It could stand a little bit of an update due to things like Bant being quite obviously a new one that's going to stay based on how many of them keep popping up at all these events.

Goblins most definitely isn't dead, but it's going to slump I'm sure for a bit. Zoo is kind of in the same boat for a bit, but no way would I pull it. It will adapt and so will gobbos. If anything, we have been testing a new version of Goblins with Goblin Settler and it's not too shabby so far. Getting to pop lands off Lacky, Vial, and Instigator is hilarious. It feels like Ponza.

New Horizons has just morphed into Bant overall. It's basically the same premise, but it's far from it's original incarnation. Kind of like saying reanimator with Iona/reanimate is just like reanimator with Nicol Bolas/Shallow Grave. Big change, but same deck. Over the years it just got so much replaced it's a different one now.

Team America might be on there to stay too. It's been doing well at just about every tournament I have seen it in anymore.

New Horizons and Countertop I agree can be moved to established, and team american can be moved to DTB. Otherwise it seems pretty accurate. If you were to make a gauntlet for testing the other 10 decks and team america should be on it. Beyond that maybe 8-12 established decks can make the cut. Everything else may take too much time and is better to just learn how it works so you can have a game plan in the rare cases you do see it.

There's one slight thing: the deck section on TCdecks isn't updated as lively as it should, and some organizers are slow enough to not send the decks in quickly. Give it at least a week (or even 10 days) at the start of the month to update the DTB, so that it reflects the end of month data correctly. Just look at it: its already June 1st, but the latest update features a deck from May, 21st, and they would keep coming for sure.

Is there anyway that they could weight the results by participant count? As it stands, a Zoo top 8 at a 12 person tournament counts the same as a Zoo top 8 appearance at a 1200 person tournament.

I love this though. This is great information to have.

This is a good point and I should have thought of that. Next month's update will probably happen around July 10th, then. We'll see what happens about this month.

I actually did that and more (1st place weighing more than 5th-8th, for example) a couple of years ago, but I had to type in every archetype manually and it was a massive pain in the ass. None of us mods have the time to do something similar again. I might shoot an email to TC to suggest a similar tweak to their software, but that's it.

Yeah, that sounds like an issue that is really hard for you to solve, and hopefully really easy for them to solve being closer to the data. Personally, I think that number of participants (more specifically the number of rounds caused by number of participants) is a more useful weighting than place in the top 8, but that's me.

Heh, we think along the same lines:

In light of both Grand Prix: Chicago and the third Bazaar of Moxen tournament, it has been decided to switch to a slightly more sophisticated system for determining deck scores, so that placements in larger tournaments receive an appropriately heavier weighting:

Points per placement = {Number of Swiss rounds} + {Number of Top 8 rounds won}

Btw, is it going to be DTB all over now, no more DTB @ 7% and DTW at 4%, and ATW at x% ?

(just to know... I'm cool with whichever... since the amount of data seems to be bigger, DTB could be even less x%s, or setting a number of DTBs instead of setting %s)

Not Surprised at all to see CounterTop and Goblins get knocked off the list, but Bant and TES? I guess TES because it hasn't made any showings, but Bant aggro / NO bant? Why did that thread get knocked off?

Koby

Because according to TC's metagame #'s, NO/Pro has less penetration of the metagame than Painter Stone. Aggro Bant has even less.

Combined, they were prevalent, but separated, they are less than 10% on average.

Looking at the graph, Pro Bant/Sneak Attack missed DTB by 1 Top 8, while Rock/Affinity/Ubg Landstill missed by 2. I would guess there will be more than 5 more often than not.

Given the month to month update status though, should we keep the decks that fell from DTB one month in the forum as a DTW, and then removed if it stays out of DTB range for two? It would give the forum a little more beef as a "If you have no idea what you'll be dealing with, this is the stuff to test against" thing.

Richard Cheese
06-01-2011, 04:37 PM
I actually like the new DTB, although I agree that the threshold might be lowered a bit to allow a few more decks into the top tier, especially helpful for newcomers to the scene.

The real problem though is the Established Decks area. There's a ton of stuff in there that could be moved to a new "Past Archetypes" area. Whether it's based on forum activity or tournament showings/results, that forum needs to be thinned badly.

New Horizons is not really a deck anymore, neither is Counterbalance anything. However Bug/Team America are both real decks, Zoo is arguable, but I still don't think it is good enough to be in deck to beats. Also I think the Hive Mind is now an established deck.

"For "competitive" decks: Decks which are optimized, thoroughly tested, played in a variety of metagames, and have proven themselves in a competitive tournament environment. A deck is not required to be Tier 1 to be included in this forum. Includes Decks to Beat, Decks to Watch, and Archetypes to Watch."

I find it hard to believe that Zoo does not fall under this description. It is widespread, has a long history of being played, and has consistently placed near-ish the top of the standings. Decks to Beat aren't just "hot" decks, they're decks you need to have at least a vague plan against in order to expect to do well at a tournament. I'd also argue that decks to beat should perhaps be included in the forum because they exhibit a specific strategy that is markedly effective, but perhaps suppressed due to metagame concerns. I might argue that Vial Goblins deserved to stay in the DTB forum, even if locked, because it exhibits an almost perfect execution of aggro-control WITHOUT resorting to counterspells, and there are valuable lessons inherent in such lists.

Goblins is also pretty dead, so lets archive the locked thread and then move the live one to Established decks. TES and ANT are both established decks as well.

This may be anecdotal, but a Goblins deck went undefeated day 1 at GP Providence. I doubt any of its opponents would argue it is dead. I'm only looking directly at the results of the Orlando and Louisville opens, but I think it may be very difficult to accurately say what will be "decks to beat" in the post-NPH metagame without a few more tournaments. There's some pretty absurd variance in the numbers between these two tournaments (the humorous standout being Affinity, which went from almost 10% of the field with a 40% win percentage at Orlando to less than 2% of the field with a 15% win percentage in Louisville), and there were only a few decks who kept a similar winning percentage betweent the two (Merfolk: 57%->54%, Team America: 66%->54%, Painted Stone: 53%->63%, only counting those who had an actual winning percentage, I'm sure a lot of the sub-50% decks were roughly similar). So those are the only decks that I'd be comfortable saying are currently "decks to beat", but even then that's a tiny sample size: the next large tournament's results might suggest a complete blowout for one of them.

Also, based on the description of not needing to be tier 1 to be included, none of these win percentages are really relevant. If you showed up at either tournament, you could expect to play Merfolk, Team America, Affinity, Dredge, and after that *possibly* Landstill. Other than that, it's a complete crap shoot.

These decks you are all claiming would probably be in there if the philosophy was the one awarding points according to swiss rounds played. However, I wonder who had this brilliant idea, cuz that person does nothing besides updating DTBs . xD

Besides, I like that DTB doesn't reflect only BOM + GP, there's more to legacy than it is shown.

I agree that Threshold should be different, tho. I think the threshold should actually be variable so that something around 10 decks were always set as DTB.

The fact that Junk isn't on the DTB is a huge mistake. I don't even like the deck, but it's been the most consistent performer in the starcity's and since they run the most tournaments, theres no reason that shouldn't be there.

Also Landstill not being on there with it winning the bazzar, 2nd in GP providence, and Gerry T blowing up the starcity ciruit with it deffinately means thats an archetype people are gunning for.

Painter Stone shouldn't be in the DTB.

Painter has performed amazingly over the whole month, and I think it's accurate. The fact that the metagame is now shifting will turn these decks you say into the next month DTBs. Unfortunatelly, Junk and Landstill didn't make into DTBs due to the low amount of Top8s over this month, but if what you say is true, and I believe it is, they will become next month's DTB.

I'll say once again that, if instead of % threshold, we had fixed number of decks in DTB session (i.e. always have 10 decks there), Rock, Landstill and Bant would be DTBs and the list would be more accurate.

Maverick is wrecking Europe.

Not to give the mods a shit-ton more work, but it may be worth considering splitting the "Established" decks into archetypes. They're not quite as clear-cut in Legacy as they are in Type 1, but certainly some delineation would help keep track of threads.

I'd be pleased with more threads in the DTB forum, too. They're the strategies/decks you need to be prepared for, and right now that leaves out significant strategies that are common. For example, there is no storm-based combo deck in there, or blue-based control (not counting Painted Stone as control seems fair), even though blue-based control was about 11% of the Orlando 5k metagame, which is more than any other deck but Merfolk.

So maybe even just some simple primers with various decklists for the base archetypes that show up and are powerful, even if they're currently not in vogue. (Storm Combo - ANT, TES, Belcher, etc; U/xyz Control - Landstill, BUG, Counter-Top, etc).

@ Everyone asking why there's a threshold instead of a fixed Top 8 / Top 10 / whatever: We deliberately decided for a threshold because it is better at reflecting the variety of the format.

Suppose, for example, that a new Flash-type deck comes up and wins 90% of tournaments: in such an event, it's better that the DTBF contains only neo-Flash, rather than neo-Flash plus a bunch of irrelevant decks that got lucky a couple of times. Vice-versa, if the format became a lot more open than now, the threshold system would reflect this by having a large number of decks which are all close enough to the top.

This month is closer to the former situation than the latter: Merfolk has been insanely dominant, and TA and Maverick are also hugely ahead of the rest of the format, and that's why there are fewer decks in the list. Hopefully the pendulum will swing back towards more variety in the near future.

That said, I've talked to Pablo (the guy who maintains The Council) and he's actually been working on a more sophisticated measure of deck success, so I will probably soon change the system to follow that - and at the moment, this new criterion looks like it would bring Landstill to the DTB.

ALSO VERY IMPORTANT: STOP SHOUTING 'THIS DECK SHOULD / SHOULD NOT BE IN THE DTB'. IT'S NOT A HUMAN DECISION. THERE IS TOURNAMENT DATA, AND PABLO PROCESSES IT. IF YOU DON'T LIKE HIS WORK, EITHER CONTACT HIM OR MAKE YOUR OWN SITE. THE ONLY CHOICE WE MAKE IS WHERE TO PLACE THE CUTOFF.

On topic... if Merfolk is the most dominant deck and it preys on Blue decks, then what Tier 1 blue decks is it preying on? If the answer is none, then Merfolk is the best blue deck at the moment? And the other decks are Neo-anti Merfolk decks?

Quit complaining about the [DTB] section, please. Not only it is difficult to keep track of 65374163 tournament results, NC promised a monthly update - and still no one has appreciated the endeavour. I know playing one of the so-called Decks To Beat is "c0oL aNd Aw3s0m3", but losing the DTB status doesn't change the deck at all. People putting up less results with Dredge than, say, Maverick, simply means there were more popular/efficient strategies - it doesn't mean Dredge has fallen off the radar. Or maybe it has, but I didn't know that.

Everybody claiming that this or that deck should be in the DTB forum should just shup up. Your opinion is only based on your personal preference and not unbiased. The current decks are in there for actual tournament data.

From what I've seen, Junk is a :b::g: Rock with :w: splash, and focuses on disruption, while Maverick is a :g::w: aggro deck which can splash :b: for a little extra disruprion.

+1

Maverick decks usually runs Natural Order, Green Sun's Zenith, and Stoneforge, and the deck's engine normally revolves around this. And its more towards aggro than the usual Junk list.

Junk is much more focused on disruption, as the average build runs around 12 crits(playsets of Goyf, KotR, Confidant), Hymn, Vindicate/Maelstrom Pulse.....Stuff like that. Of course, there are very different builds in this archetype, because its very versatile and tunable.

Hi everybody, i'm Pablo and after a pair of hours thinking about it i've decided i'm not a machine (if i were a machine a realized in 2 seconds XD).

I made the script for calculating the monthly points of each deck based on his result and the number of players of the tournament, maybe it's not the best way, but who knows which is the best way?

About the naming of archetypes i know is very complicated and i have to trust in my own criteria, anyway i have a beautiful link in my web where you can tell me about another system points, new archetypes or if any deck is bad-archetyped:
http://www.thecouncil.es/tcdecks/contact.php

I hope you like my web and hope to show news along this summer. Thanks.

Isn't it time for an update already? I'm pretty sure this could easily be done within a few minutes if we stick to the decks listed by thecouncil. Also, I'd like to point out that the decks listed as Blade Control and Patriot there are basically the same decks (UWr Stoneforge Mystic) so these should be put together. I'm also going to message paulmaster about this (in case you aren't checking this thread every two minutes).

Yup. However, last time I updated on the 1st and someone pointed out that decklists for that month would keep coming for the next 10-15 days. So from now on updates will happen around the 10th or so, when most lists are in.
