But seriously I voted for painter stone, it works well with enlightened tutor and u don't have to add creatures.

230 cards is plenty. Enlightened tutor should be a 4 of.

It looks like I'll go Painter/Grindstone as my second combo.

Also tutor is a 7 of right now with cunning wish and one in the board.

Since this is meant to be a fun deck anyways, I would play all these cards maindeck...

4 Enlightened Tutor
4 Living Wish
2 Dark Depths
3 Vampire Hexmage
3 Painter's Servant
4 Grindstone
4 Leyline of the Void
4 Helm of Obedience
4 Orim's Chant
4 Isochron Scepter
4 Sensei's Divining Top
4 Counterbalance
4 Natural Order
3 Sword of the Meek
4 Thopter Foundry

and sideboard...
1 Vampire Hexmage
1 Dark Depths
1 Painter's Servant

You could even throw in 4 Crop Rotation and 4 Eldamari's Call and cut down to a single Dark Depths.

Play a 250 card combo deck packed to the brim with tutors, combos, counters, discard spells, acceleration and nothing else. You should aim to have 8 different combos and 6 different tutors in the deck, minimum.

Every single game you win, you win with a different combo. And your opponent will be left utterly clueless as to what to sideboard in against you.

to those who made coments thanks for some ideas.

I will be updating list sometime this week.
I have decided to go with a few combos instead of just one, I will be adding in Grindstone / painter and keeping leyline / helm. I also overlooked darkdepths/hexmage and will be adding that in with a living wish package and cutting the cunning wishes.

I know it's different when you're running 60 cards, but I think Lim Dul's vault is worth a look.

Also since you're going to play some games that are going to last a while I'd think about running something like pulse of the fields. Maybe even exalted angel.

Fire//ice seems...weak

I don't know about running five colors but I guess it's ok. I really don't have too much experience with running decks this big.

Why not run actually good cards that win the game? And I mean ones that don't require that they be in a terrible deck to work

Why not post something constructive somewhere else since you clearly have nothing to add to the discussion of this deck?

Telling people that an idea won't work competitively is 100% constructive, bad boy

Not unless you back up that statement with math explaining why they can't ever hope to draw Battle of Wits, or any of the other combos they've jammed in there. Not that I disagree with you, but it's not exactly helpful.

There's got to be something better than:

Predict
Prohibit

Might as well run Scrying Sheets and Snow-covered Islands. A big patch of lands can really hurt you.

Clutch of the Undercity Transmutes for Battle of Wits. Slow, I know, but an option.

May be worth looking into going down to 2 colors, or going more control-ey. A Stoneforge Mystic package would also seem pretty decent, since some games you're going to have to rely on creatures, and there's not really any shame in it.

Artifact acceleration (the Signets or the painland ones, in particular) might be decent. Whatever your opponent decides to do, they're almost always going to bank on being able to Wasteland your lands to keep you from doing anything relevant, and disrupting your hand to further complicate the situation. Signets would help ameliorate that, somewhat.

EDIT: If you're going Painter's Grindstone in the main, why not splash red for Imperial Recruiter instead of Black for...whatever? Red gives you access to a lot of efficient removal, and Gamble as well.

Battle of wits costs 4, so clutch won't work unfortunately.

I'd run 4 Chrome Mox in this deck, between the combo's there will usually be atleast one blank card you can toss.

I'd take out 2 Grim Lavamancers (boarding in 3 cards isn't going to make much of a difference in a 200+ card deck I'm afraid). And add +1 Karakas side and +1 Karakas main perhaps with tolaria west..

Worldy Tutor & Sylvan Tutor find Painters Servant/Trinket Mage/Hexmage/Academy Rector if you do decide to turn to green.

Urborg, tomb of yawgmoth might also be a good plan. And Tabernacle side/main maybe?

Gixian Probe is probably better than opt in this deck. It shows you what combo your opponent is vulnerable to and costs less mana if you are short on blue. Especially if you would also run wordly/sylvan tutors, in which case even Streetwraith might be good.

On the other hand, you could just skip all the other combo's and go for Battle of Wits + Painter/Stone. Then you'd just give up lots of tutors/randomness for some solid counter/removal plan.

A Meekstone might be useful for the Trinketmage toolbox. Why Terror in the SB? Smother or Shriekmaw or almost any removal is better than Terror. Good luck with it. I would love to hear a tourney report from a Battle of Wits player.

Why not try to put Brainspoil in it? In that way you have a semi-tutor in the deck that can search out the battle. And to Evanmartyr: Battle costs 5cmc, not 4, and that's why Clutch is not so optimal. But I'm loving the guy who takes this to a tournament and posts a report!

If your running Rector why not run Lost Auramancers too? It's a little more meat, and he'll auto-sac for you.

I know this is not the most awesome suggestion, but why not a set of Squadron Hawk He goes with the mystic / sword plan and gives your Sensei's Top more shuffles (when each one is cast).

Also, with all those lands why not a Raven's Crime or two?

As a matter of fact why not bump up the Crop Rotations like suggested before and have a toolbox of land tricks.

Maze of Ith
Karakas
Glacial Chasm

I too would love to read a report.

What advantages do I get playing this deck over say Painter or Show and Tell? Why is it worth going for a win condition that requires me to dilute my deck of good cards?

Id say because it is more fun and unique, and if you do win its a outstanding victory rather than 'i combo painter you out 2nd turn'

Stupid rhetorical question.

Why is it worth going for a win condition that requires me to dilute my deck of good cards?

Define "good" for me. Such a subjective term is useless when evaluating cards for a deck. Is Grindstone a "good" card?

The advantage is the fun factor, however I played it at the SCG legacy open in denver to a top 32 finish, if I would have been able to find the 1 Angels Grace I needed, I would have been playing round 7 as a win and in top 8 match.

On the day I felt I was in most matches and had a great time. In my 7 rounds I played-
NO Rug- won 2-1 after with battle both times, he got a progenitis both games I won, but wrath and Day stop him.

Dredge- won 2-0 countered his early outlet and got a turn 4 Battle. then Game 2 I kept opening hand with Rav Trap. and trinket mage, traped his first dredge removing 3x dredge creatures and a bridge, drew enlightned tutor to fetch Tormod's crypt, then trinket maged up Relic of Progenitus.

Merfolk- 2-1 Played a Vampire hexmage he let resolve and I drop Dark Depths for the win. Then game three I needle his aether vial and drop a rector, he plays some guys and taps out fighting for one, I untap and play Vadalken Shackles steal Coral Commander, next turn drop rector and when he is forced to block, I fetch battle of wits.

Red Deck Wins- 0-2 I get a game loss after sitting down 1 min late after running across the tourny sight from the feature match area to my round 4 seat. so we start game 2 he hits turn 1 goblin guide and burns me out on his third turn. 3-1

u/b ad naus tendrils- Storms me out game 1, game two he counts wrong and I painter grindstone him out. Game 3 I get a fast draw and my turn 4 I have hexmage, Darkdepths in play, forcing him to go for it with 3 lands and 4 cards in hand, he hits storm 4 and cast ad naus needing help, didn't make it. 4-1

Hive mind- 1-2 Game one he wins, game two he show and tells and I drop battle for the win, game 3 goes long with him not wanting to show and tell, He hits hive mind and I say OK untap and stack pact triggers, cast mystical teachings with a white mana floating, I say Angels Grace, he slumps and says good games then someone says make him show it so my opponet says sure show me it, since I never found one before the tourny I don't really have it and he wins 2-1 Had i found the Angels Grace I would have won this match and played my final round for top 8 but without the Angels Grace I had to just play for a money finish.

Hive mind- this eas against a guy that was watching me all day and cheering me along, he was a very nice guy and game one I hit battle fast while he was looking for the hivemind, game two I keep double force of will opener and stop his hive plan after a few draws he says "no guts no glory" I think I'm dead because I don't have a battle in hand, he show and tells and we flip, my Academy rector vs. his Emrakul, the Aeons Torn He can't attack me because I'm at 18 and will fetch battle, we draw go for about 6 or 8 turns with me looking for a way to kill my rector, finally he EOT red pact and makes a 4/4, attacks me and I have to sac all 5 lands and my rector and don't have an out in my deck. Game 3 I mental mistep his ponder and he misses land drops, I hit turn 5 battle, and he has a pyroblast, He goes for show and tell a few turns later while I have 2 cards in hand he flips Emrakul, the Aeons Torn again, I flip Ensnaring Bridge leaving just a regrouth in my hand, I draw dark depths and we spend turns drawing as I wind down depths counters 2 per turn, I cast edict on him and he sacs Emrakul, the Aeons Torn I just can not find a way to get my bridge off the board, finally he goes for show and tell again and I have nothing he hiveminds and plays red pack, blue pact, I'm still OK as I have 11 mana in play, then he plays green pact and I lose still holding the regrowth, I never hit a green mana or a single fetch land the whole game or I coulf have just brought back the battle for the win. 1-2

I ended up 4-3 and took 30th place which was good enough for $50 if only I could have found an angels grace the story would have been even better.

Your merfolk opponent was terrible and your shuffles were illegal. You are supposed to shuffle your entire deck when you fetch, not only the top half like you did several times during the feature match. Everybody in the coverage team called it out, surprised no one called a judge on you. I would appluad playing a deck like this to success at a big tournament, but I can not condone poor application of the rules.

Way to focus on the negative. He also got a random game loss for no good reason.

Congrats on the top 32! You got some impressive victories. Winning twice against Progenitus, 2-0 vs. Dredge, using Academy Rector to hold down an Emrakul? Well done.

What is with people hating on this thread? ...I don't get it.

I know I said it earlier, but what is the drawback to Lost Auramancers in this deck.

With Vampire Hexmage is pretty much an auto win.

Edit: Also why no Merchant Scroll? ..it gets both Fact or Fiction, or Intuition.

...not to mention a counter spell when you need it.

Is it my fault my opponet makes play mistakes? Should I not count any wins where if my opponet had played better I would have lost? If I make a mistake and lose should I count that as a win? It's Magic people make play errors and I was able to capitalize on those errors, my deck choice doesn't change that.

As for questioning my wins, every time I ever searched my deck I shuffled either that section or the whole thing and always sat the piles down and told my opponets that they could shuffle more or cut to whatever they wanted me to play off of, and I had judges watching a majority of my matches so clearly I was doing enough to be considered fair. So I see no reason for you to insinuate that I was trying to pull something over on my opponets or cheat in any way.

I never connected Lost Auramancers and Vampire Hexmage, I just thought I would never have him live long enough to lose the three counters.

As for Merchant Scroll, it's a very good choice I just never thought of it, I would for sure play a few of those if i were to play this deck again.

Yeah, I should have mentioned the Hexmage synergy before. ...also I don't know if it deludes your deck too much but Hex Parasite also does the trick.

He also messes with Vials, Planeswalkers and the alike.

Edit: also if you can think of a way to get Protean Hulk into & out of play he can fetch Academy Rector & a single Carrion Feeder. Plus 1 more (1) CMC guy.

Back when Flash was legal that is what I was doing with it (to nab a Yawgmoth's Bargain into a Tendrils of Agony) before someone figured out the sliver thing.

Natural Order? ...Food Chain ...Summoner's Pact?

A Summoner's Pact with a Sneak Attack in play = win. Opponents EOT Pact ->Hulk -> Sneak into play EOT Sac it. Place Rector / Feeder / Whatever into play -> Sac Rector to Feeder -> Put Battle of Wits into play let it go to your turn win choose to resolve Wits first and win :) ...Green Sun's Zenith (with a Painter's Servant naming green can go right for the Rector)? ...is any of this worth it? ...it may be. It may also just be fun.
