I'm a tad bit confused about the wording on Painter's Servant.
Does its effect work on permanents that were on the Battlefield before Servant was cast?
E.g. Can I Pyroblast a Tarmogoyf to destroy it after I landed a Painter's Servant naming blue?
Painter's Servant changes all cards in all zones to become the chosen color - this is a continuous effect as long as Painter's Servant is a permanent. (Note that Humility can't override it either). The effect is similar to Blood Moon in it's type-changing effect.
Yes, you would be able to Pyroblast/Hydroblast/Deathgrip/Gloom your opponent's spells and permanents.

i don't think if this question has been answered already in another place, but if so, i couldn't find it.
i have a pretty good understanding of the rules, but i'm totally lost when it comes to layering. here's what came up tonight on cockatrice:
my opponent plays painter's servant with a grindstone in play, and activates the grindstone. in response to the grindstone, i cast lightning bolt on his servant, which he can't counter. he bins the servant, but still insists i lose the game. i'm under the impression that grindstone rechecks after the scarecrow leaves play, meaning both of the cards milled would be their normal colors.
my opponent then insisted that he was right, and spammed the chat saying "don't hate the player, hate the game," but this is irrelevant.
as far as i know, it should play out like this:
1. activate grindstone.
2. respond to grindstone activation by targeting painter's servant with lightning bolt.
3. grindstone ability resolves, milling two cards. (the two cards were lightning bolt and sensei's divining top.
4. the cards are different colors, so grindstone ability leaves the stack.
right? or do the layers make this more complicated than it has to be?

Right, as soon as painter leaves play cards stop being the named color so grindstone has to actually have the right cards show up to mill more than 2.

"Layering" refers to the application and interaction of different continuous abilities. In this case, there is only a single continuous ability. This is just like how when your goblin king dies, your goblins no longer have +1/+1.
