Hunter's Insight 2G
Instant
Choose target creature you control. Whenever that creature deals combat damage to a player or planeswalker this turn, draw that many cards.

Just a generic questions about instants and attacking, to understand how should I play correctly something like this (I'm no more used to since the times Kird Ape -> Giant Growth was common, early in the 90's...)

Is there a way I can play this minimizing the risk of be 2x1ed?

Maybe something like this: I attack and ask the opponent if he wants to block / reply. If he doesn't, I suppose he doesn't have removals: then play my Hunter's Insight before damage assignment and profit. Correct? Are there better options?

Anything with hexproof should do the trick.

That's ok, but without hexproof?

No. He can answer your spell with a instant speed removal anyday. Just be sure he has no mana open, no swamp, or no removal at hand, with gitaxian probe.

Edit: You can also play Vines of Vastwood... and Mental Misstep... to try to avoid removal

Ok but that's too limitating: in that case I'd just give up the card.

I'm wandering if there is some way to use it properly under more generic conditions.

Let's say I have no idea about my opponent's hand, I just know he could have an instant removal.

I attack with something quite big - say an exalted Mirran Crusader - and ask if he wants to reply with something.

If he says "no", I could assume he has no removals, since the damage he's taking is huge, so I play my Hunter's Insight "safely" before damage assignment and then draw six cards.

Theory: if my opponent is saving his removal until I play Hunter's Insight just because he's supposing I could have one, I think he's just playing bad, since he's taking a lot of damage without being sure if I really have some kind of trick (N.B. if I would play this card, I'd play no more than 2, and I'd wait until I've played all the other stuff in my hand).

What do you think? Are there weak points in my reasoning?

No. It's your turn, so you have priority. You have to play spells first, if you want to play spells, and your opponent will always have a chance to respond both before and after the spell resolves.

If you ever ask your opponent if he has a response while it's your turn/you have priority, you're passing priority. If your opponent doesn't do anything, he's passing, and the game moves to the next step/phase.
