View Full Version : How do you guys store your cards?

So, lately my Legacy collection has grown to the point that my huge binder can't even contain it anymore. I have pretty much every deck in legacy, and I've sorted cards in my binder according to deck. However the binder is about to burst, so I'd like a more efficient way of storage, one that can also be neatly organized and can be hauled around as one object. Also being able to find any needed card quickly is really important.
What do you guys do to store/organize your collections?

My lgs sells these big cardboard boxes designed for storing mtg. The height is just a bit taller than a card, and it is divided into five rows, each of which is just slightly wider than a card. It's about a foot and a half deep, so it can hold a fair amount. I currently have three of these filled up and working on a fourth one. They're nicely stacked on top of each other. I bought two, and then built two more out of cardboard using the originals as templates. I also have a cover for whichever box is on top to keep dust out.
I actually sort all of my cards by color. The five built-in rows are perfect for the five different colors, then I have another box which holds multicolored, artifact, nonbasic land, basic land, and misc. Next, within each color, the cards are sorted by expansion, and I have little paper dividers to separate them. It was kind of a pain to get it all setup in the first place, but now it's super easy to find whatever I need, and resorting stuff doesn't take very long either.

I donate Legacy unplayables (actually bulk C/UC) to new players/whoever is there at the time. I keep it all the extra in one of the boxes Malchar was describing. All my staples go into a binder where it's sorted by color, and so forth.

all the cards I plan on playing with go in perfect fits, then playsets go in penny sleeves, then I sort the penny sleeves by color and put them alphabetically in fat pack boxes. Works well for me. Used to keep a no trade binder, but boxes work just as well if you aren't interested in showing the cards off much.

I just take with me some cards that I'm going to use at a small 4 pocket binder and the rest of my stamples I keep at home, inside a case with old sleeves and properely organized.
I use my cards as carpeting and wallpaper. It really ties the room together.
A binder for each set. 4 cards per slot, 9 cards per page.

Sorted by colour, for each colour divided between new and old frame, then sorted creatures - sorceries - instants - enchantments - planeswalker.
Currently 2 folders, folder 1 white/blue/black/red, folder 2 green/multi/colourless/artifacts/lands.
Lands are sorted duals - fetches - utility - unhinged basics. Probably going to get a third folder soon, then it will be
white/blue/black
red/green
multicolour/artifacts/lands/pimp stuff
in a binder. Card are double sleeved in upsided down pages (9 cards) and sorted by color, stored like this so the dust doesn't get between the 2 sleeves ...
oh well ...

I have a ton of those 4 row boxes at home, carry two of the old ultra pro cases, and donate all commons and uncommons to the local store.

I have pretty much all the staples in one binder. Duals, Fetches, and the most played cards. I have another binder that has misc stuff sorted by colors. I also have 2 smaller binder that have Artifacts in one, and gold and other lands in the other. Commons/Uncommons in boxes.

everything that i don't absolutely want i sell/trade/give away - it's very unusual that i would have more than a playset of a card
all my cards are sorted into sets sleeved in penny sleeves and stored in flat folders
flat ultra-pro collectors card albums are the best
i found you can comfortably store four cards per slot
i have about a hundred albums

All my cards are in decks, which are in sleeves.
I just have a lot of binders.
I have 1 binder with the cards I play the most (the so called no-trade binder). Then I have a 9 pocket portfolio with 20 pages filled with my good dual lands (duals, shocks, fetches, filter, worldwake, etc), a 4 pocket portfolio with my pimp cards. I have 2 binders filled with my 2 collections (korean cards and legendary permanents) and 2 ultra pro binders bulking with rares not in my no-trade binder.
My (un)commons are also all in binders. For each color I have 2 binders where the cards are sorted to set (first binder alpha-judgement, second Onslaught-current) and within the set they are sorted alphabetical. In these binders I have up to 4 cards of each unique english card (I only use foreign cards to fill up slots to make playsets), every card I own more then the 4 card threshold are stored in a wooded briefcase and are used for proxies, the occasional bulk sale or as a free gift to friends/new players.
I almost forgot, I also have 2 portfolios with $4+ and high end cards I have no use for anymore for trading purposes.
I have build my own closet to fit these binders in, although for some reason the kitchen table and the top of that closet is always bulking with halfway finished/taken apart decks and other cards waiting for me to store them in the right place.

4-panel monster binder with playsets of "good" cards ($15+) which is typically not dipped into for trading.
Regular size binder with my trade stuff, the size of which is dwindling as more stuff goes in the small binder.
Large 4-row cardboard box with notable commons/uncommons separated by color, a stack of bulk foils, and a stack of garbage to proxy on.
My LGS gives pretty spectacular rates on bulk rares so I sell to them every few months. I don't really crack packs other than limited at prereleases, so I don't have a ton of extra stuff floating around. I trade as much as possible (started playing again around WWK release and already have a somewhat respectable collection, only a few dual lands though) and get my limited fix through cube drafting. When I do accumulate a decent amount of extra un/common chaff I'll give it to one of the new kids at the LGS.

I have my Legacy playables in binders for each color sorted by mana cost so I can find what I'm looking for. Random cards that I'll use for EDH or casual decks are in boxes.
I try to collect a playset of everything if I can, but I don't put overmuch effort into it beyond staples. I have a giant 6" binder for legacy staples/valuable cards, and then for the rest a ton of five-row boxes slotted into a wire shelf.
I also keep two trade binders - a small one with valuable and recent set cards, and a large one with everything else for EDH etc trading.

I have somewhere in the neighborhood of 20,000 cards stored by color only since I search through these only occasionally. These would be cards that I'd normally give away but after finding a Wasteland, a Sea Drake, and various other goodies that accidentally slip in there from time to time, I tend to keep them around and give them away more carefully.
Legacy playables and other cards I find fun or interesting are alphabetized and stored in a 5-row box.
P-9, duals, and other high dollar cards are kept in a small (4 cards per page) binder or in individual hardshell cases.
Finally, trade stock goes in a zipper binder so I can transport it easily, and if it's dropped everything stays inside--as long as it's zipped.
The good stuff is in a binder the less then good but still worth keeping stuff is 4 to a sleeve in a box with a moisture packet to make sure nothing warps. The crap is sold off at $10 per thousand on the internet.
I use to have tones of stuff I would never play (Ive estimated around 50k over the life of the game. At some point I decided it was taking up to much space and bulked out. Now the goal is to keep to 1 5k long box of playable + decks. If it doesn't have I place there I can always buy it back later.

Binder for tradeables.
Most of my good stuff I use in decks though so my binder is pretty thin.
Bulk I keep in a large tin box. I should order one of those large cardboard boxes thats split into rows as my tin is getting rather full.

Boxes in a fire safe.
After all, magic is the best investment I ever made.

Non-play/trade/sell material goes into one of the big 5-row boxes that I've had for at least 10 years now. Took advantage of my unemployed status a few months ago to go through and alphabetize it and remove copies 5+ of everything.

Working in a warehouse for a semiconductor company we get crazy boxes in all the time and i'll swipe some if they're appealing. Got a few sick boxes the other day. They'll hold all my edh decks as well as standard, and legacy decks. pimp of the pimp. Will post a pic when i'm done molding the inside.
but the best way is just large 5k boxes, or binders of specific value, none trade, color. etc.
