View Full Version : 3rd deck to compliment 4c Landstill & Aggro-Loam?

I'm getting back into playing magic after 3 years off. I'd like to have a third deck to complement my 4c Landstill and Aggro-Loam lists that I'm trying to update. I am seriously lacking in creativity. I don't know the meta or match-ups anymore.
Any recommendations?
I'm a scrub and just play for fun so (although I like winning), so I just ask that:
a) No combo. Nothing against combo folks, but just not fun for me.
b) No Ichorid/Dredge. Never been my thing either.
c) No decks where you tediously repeat the same steps over and over again (I know this is subjective, I'm thinking specifically of counter-top from when I played previously and it seemed half the game time was spent on top-tricks)
d) A complement to Landstill & Aggro Loam. Something to play if the match-ups in my meta end up being cruel to those two decks.
I have no budget restrictions and already own a lot of legacy staples, but if you're advocating dropping a lot of coin I would like it to be a deck/archetype that has some projected longevity (I know you can't guarantee anything).
Honestly I'm really attracted to Eva Green, but I'm thinking its just another mid-range beat-down deck like loam so it well play in a similar style and have the same bad match-ups as loam? Is that correct?
I'm kind of attracted to the more control oriented versions of The Rock I've seen as well, but I have no idea what its match-ups are supposed to be like.
Thank you and I'm sorry because I'm sure you get a million threads like this.

If you plan to play the Landstill without Mystic it will have a negative combo matchup, as does Aggro Loam. I'd consider something such as Team America as your third deck. Won't need many extra cards as well.

I would say an aggro deck would go well with your control deck and your aggro-controllish deck. You might want to look into either Goblins, Zoo, or the new-age Affinity.

If point c) is important to you, you may want to look at GW Maverick. Really flexible decks with lot of options and playlines. Be aware that you are rather weak to a combo heavy meta then with those 3 decks.

Maverick is a good idea. Its quite fun to play, not too expensive and really competitive. It has similar matchups all over the field in comparison to Aggro Loam though. (Probably all a little better at the moment, but still similar).
If you want to cover your bad matchups I'd go with a nice blue aggro control deck, such as Canadian Threshold (or better the UGR Natural Order deck), Team America or Bant.
Out of those, simply pick the color combination you like best. For example I'd never play an UBG deck as Team America, Bant is ok but I love the playstyle of UGR aggro control.
Those variations are strong against combo, quite expensive (but most cards will not lose value) and really strong decks in any metagame.

I wanted to thank everyone for taking time to reply to my admittedly noobish question. It was very interesting to have some ideas thrown out and begin researching them.
I'm going to go ahead and build a UBG Team America list on MTGO tonight and see how it goes as I already have most of the cards and it should give them the pieces to complete Eva Green as well.
Also, how are combo matchups with Team America? Everything in the thread I've read so far has indicated that it rolls over combo, but I'm still in the first half of the thread and those comments are pretty old.
The GW Maverick decks also look very interesting and I believe it wasn't a deck that was around when I was last actively playing in 2008 so maybe that will be my 4th project when I get some more expendable income and time.
Thanks again,
Fred

If you want something that is extremely entertaining yet powerful, you might want to try MUD. I play a green splash mud (list on the mud discussion thread in format and article discussion forum). It is an absolutely blast to play, kicking ass by chaining battlespheres and wurmcoils with forgemaster is lots of fun. It also beats the worst mu for your 2 other decks, combo. Between chalice, lodestone golem and sideboard trinisphere/revokers, combo will die an ugly death.

Nothing feels better than T1 greaves, T2 metalworker into the nuts.
I can attest to how bad it feels from the other side of the equation after having my aggro-loam smashed by MUD Stompy on MTGO the other night.
Sadly I have developed an irrational hatred of artifacts. I believe it stems from having my face smashed in many times by various affinity decks back when I was silly enough to play formats other than legacy.
However irrational the feeling may be, playing an artifact oriented deck (or combo) just feels like going over to "the enemy" for a Landstill fiend like myself. I suppose that makes me a fanboy/homer, etc.
Hey there, and welcome back to Legacy! Based on the cards and decks you already have, I would highly recommend trying Brian Boss' Junk Depths deck here:
http://sales.starcitygames.com//deckdatabase/displaydeck.php?DeckID=39681
It's a pretty sweet variant of the standard BGW Junk decks, and you probably already have some of the duals and fetchlands from your other two decks, as well as stuff like Mental Misstep, Swords, Confidant, Tarmogoyf.
I think this will prove a much more fun and rewarding deck to play than Eva Green, and is actually better and more lethal. Nothing like dropping a first turn Confidant or attacking with a 20/20 creature. I'd tweak the deck a little bit (ie change manabase and fit in some Hymn to Tourachs), but that's a pretty savage place to start, and probably better than Tombstalker decks right now.

I recommend Blue Zoo. Calebs list is good, but I'd play the fast one ;P

I'd probably go for some NO BANT list. Zoo and Team America are just not good enough. You could go for a control list with Bant Charm or switch over to one of the more aggressive lists. Knight of the Reliquary and Natural Order are really good.

I would go for a combo deck either Hive Mind, Storm, or Dredge. You have control and aggro covered. Combo, in addition to your other deck types allows you to attack any meta from all angles.
