View Full Version : Debating on basic lands

My EDH has room for one of each basic land. Which one do I want to use? I don't want GURU, foil Zendikar or foil Unhinged. Looking for something with a little flair. The Wald misprint and the AN Mountain are current front runners in their category.
Suggestions?

Well if your top choices so far are AN Mountain and german Misprint forest, might as well go for the Drudge Skeletons Swamp

Obviously no one is going to put Drudge Skeletons in an EDH deck so people will know it's supposed to be a Swamp.
Then find a miscut Forest or Island and the other Summer edition.

best island is the island/dark ritual test print, this is just insane.^^
other alternative, but not easier to find is the parallax tide island from alternate 8th test prints.
Revised, to really rub in as you're beating them down with foil foreign cards.

I was thinking about this ther other day. I would run the German bb Plains with the same art as the Wald.
And, even though you mentioned that you don't want a GURU Island, how about one without the stamp, or one that is misstamped?
Aside from that The first two posts addressed the other three basics I thought about: Wald, AN Mountain, and "Drudge Skeletons"
The Venetian Island is also faily nice, as is the Terese Nielsen Invasion Island. Definitely runners up in my mind, but maybe not unique enough.

Just get a couple of Revised ones and write 1994 on the bottom. Conversation starter by itself.
Wald is awesome. I highly recommend it. In fact, I should get some more of them. Unfortunately, I have been told I could not play with it in my Enchantress deck at tournaments before.

Out of curiosity, what was the judge's reasoning behind this?

Count the number of forests in his picture.

Four. But i see the problem. Judges on thesource, what do you say, is it legal to mix 4th misprints with 4th plains? (all fbb of course)

That was a fake I think.
Mint Beta basics are the best looking (if you want to go with standard non misprint/test print/special ed. etc)... they have those dark and vivid colours...

I've seen judges disallow this because they felt it was done to intentionally deceive opponents.

First off, there are 5 forests in the picture. I do play Enchantress with the manabase of Walds and Plains that match. I've never had a player have a huff, but have had judges ask me to change them. I carry signed korean BB forests to swap to. The reasoning I got at the Star City events is that they don't want the potential for an opponent to be confused by what mana I have available.

APAC and Euro lands are the coolest lands imo. Plus, you rarely see people using them.
Lands misprinted as other cards (Wald, Drudge Skeletons, etc) will never be allowed in a competitive event run by anyone competent. They're too misleading. You shouldn't even attempt to bring them to a competitive event.

What about Revised Serendib Efreet?
What about Revised Serendib Efreet?
That's both just the border color and pretty well known - the potential for confusion is low.

Not the derail the thread but Wald is perfectly legal to play at a competitve tournament.
I played Lands at the GP in Rhode Island (I drew round 1 and it was all downhill from there) but I checked beforehand and the head judge said that it perfectly legal for me to use the Wald. However he did ask me nicely to not play with it for the confusion it may cause. I oblidged and happily swapped it with the Guru Forest I acquired the day before.
And not the derail any further, but my Italian Tabernacle has caused more condusion than the Wald even when I announce what I am playing when I play either one. Obscure and foreign is no excuse not to ask if you aren't entirely sure.
I always try to use Korean 5th edition WB Basics.
They don't really stand out (which I really like) and seeing I always blackborder my whole deck except for basics and duals, this also makes fetching a lot easier, since the fetchable land (for except maybe Shockduals and Dryad Arbor) are all white bordered and stand out a lot from the rest of your deck.
I play with a few APAC lands, too. I don't think I've ever run into anyone else that I've seen playing them.
Also, there are only 4 forests in the photo. The other German plains look a like is actually a real Ebene. :really:
Whenever I ask a judge about playing with misprinted Walds, I always point out explicitly that I'm not trying to cause confusion and ALWAYS explain that it is really a forest every time one comes into play (unless I know the opponent and they already expect me to be playing the misprints), though I'm sure that if a judge asked me nicely not to play them I wouldn't either.

I agree. That's why I always keep at least one of each dual plus Ancestral, Lotus, and Time Vault white-bordered in my Vintage decks. White-bordered tutor targets FTW!

Unfortunately, neither are legal for play. There are far more island/dark rituals than the 8th ed prints though.
I personally use guru/summer/misprint/japanese foil basics, depending on how they fit the deck's look. I'm not really a showoff with my stuff, so sometimes I end up playing 4th ed lands and 6th ed Doomsdays.

If you aren't opposed to foils, the MPS lands from 2007 (I think) are some of my favorites (The ones with the guild watermarks in the textbox). Then again, I just love watermarks.

In my type 1 deck I run two basic Islands. One is a signed Guru Island and the other is the Venetian Island Euro land. I really want to get the Venetian Island signed but I can't find any contact info for the artist Eric Peterson. If anyone has any contact info for him, let me know.

I was trying to find these. Did a little Googling. I think the ones your talking about are the 2006 ones?

The dark ritual/island is also noticeably thinner than an actual card, so there's pretty much no way that is legal.

I sometimes use this philosophy, but with P3K basics. Nobody else is using them, and I like how they are a bit fugly (especially the Islands art). That, or I just go with some Euro lands, which I also really like.
For pimping purposes, I've never been a fan of foils, so nice minty Betas is probably the most pimp to me, and they do look rather good, though only when stacked up with some nice crisp Beta duals :)
