So, after lurking on the forums for nearly two years now, I've finally decided that I have something to contribute.
I have always enjoyed playing Dragon Stompy, but found the deck to fold to itself too often for competitive play. I've been following a decent number of threads recently that are trying to resurrect the use of Moon effects (R/W Vial Hatebears and R/G Angry Astronauts mainly). I've sleeved up both of those decks and goldfished them a bit, but there were certain things I didn't like about either list. Using that information, I've been brewing a little bit over the past few weeks and created a decklist that I believe shows some promise. I would love some comments on what people think.
After the decklist I've included the explanation for my card choices. As an important caveat, I do not get to play Legacy very often. I tend to playtest with friends only a couple times a month and play in a competitive tournament maybe once every other month, so the card choices at this point are based mainly on theory than hard evidence. I have sleeved up the deck and goldfished it against some of the format's bigger players (NO Rug, Merefolk, Reanimator) though and I have liked what I've seen.
Looking forward to hearing people's thoughts!
Creatures/Threats: 21
4 Mother of Runes
4 Phyrexian Revoker
4 Stoneforge Mystic
4 Magus of the Moon
3 Aven Mindcensor
2 Elspeth, Knight-Errant
Equipment: 3
1 Umezawa's Jitte
1 Sword of Body and Mind
1 Batterskull
Disruption: 10
4 Swords to Plowshares
3 Lightning Helix
3 Blood Moon
Mana: 26
4 Mox Diamond
4 Ancient Tomb
3 City of Traitors
4 Arid Mesa
2 Marsh Flats
4 Plateau
5 Plains
Sideboard: 15
3 Retribution of the Meek
2 Tormod's Crypt
2 Relic of Progenitus
2 Red Elemental Blast
2 Pyroblast
1 Batterskull
1 Manriki-Gusari
1 Blood Moon
1 Aven Mindscensor
Card Choices:
Mother of Runes - Protects Stoneforge and your disruption creatures (Magus and Mindcensor). It also is the only other 1 drop besides swords. Honestly, I also feel like these would serve as efficient Misstep bait in the hopes that my Swords to Plowshares can resolve. Also, if Mom eats removal on turn 1, it clears the way for Stoneforge/Magus/Mindcensor to wreck the opponent.
Phyrexian Revoker - Crucial helper in locking down an opponent’s access to mana (Vial/Hierarch) and stopping Jace.
Stoneforge Mystic - This guy is the reason I chose white as the deck's other color. Not only do I just love playing this card, but it provides card advantage that traditional stompy builds really seem to lack.
Aven Mindcensor - Not only do these guys serve as slightly less effective moon effects, but they're also great at stopping Natural Order, Green Sun's Zenith, enemy Stoneforge Mystics, and other popular search effects in the format.
Magus of the Moon - The reason this deck exists.
Elspeth, Knight-Errant - Serves as a backup plan when Stoneforge does not work. She protects herself and provides a decent clock.
Equipment Package - I've debated having two Batterskull maindeck, but after looking at a lot of decklists, I feel like no one is packing too much hate in their mains. Sword of Body and Mind is a meta choice. I see a lot of Goyfs, Knights, and Jaces where I play. Body and Mind provides me with the protections I need as well as a useful chump blocker.
Swords to Plowshares - I debated not including any 1cc cards and including Chalice in the list, but swords is one of the main reasons behind my decision that it's not here. I always hated not having answers for problem critters while playing Dragon Stompy.
Lightning Helix - Dodges mental misstep, provides more removal, helps regain life lost from Anicent Tomb or fast aggro decks.
Blood Moon - I only run three because it's such a dead card once you've landed one on the board. I've left the fourth copy in the sideboard for matchups where it is by far the best card. So many legacy decks still run so few basics! It just makes me want to punish them!
Mox Diamond - Here's where I think I'll recieve the most critiques and comments, and I'm looking forward to hearing them. This deck banks on early acceleration and Mox Diamond does this well. It also provides both white and red mana under a moon, which is extremely important. Chrome Mox can only provide one color mana and I never want to lose something else in my hand.
Mana Base - 22 Lands may seem like a lot, but I really want to make sure Mox Diamond is accessible and I've got to account for the fact that I have 7 colorless lands. Mana bases are never a strong area of mine, so please help!
Sideboard - Granted this is a meta call, but please help me think of other options!
Retirubtion of the Meek The Retributions are great against Progenitus, Emrakul, Knights, Goyfs, and reanimated fatties.
Relic and Crypt - Hate for Dredge, Loam, Reanimator, and even Knights and Goyfs.
REB and Pyroblast - This is the second main reason why I chose not to put Chalice of the Void in this list. These are too important in the blue matchups to turn off.
Manriki-Gusari - I see a lot of Stoneforge lists in my area.
Batteskull - Brought in against other Stoneforge decks (that also run Manriki), artifact hate, and aggro matchups.
Blood Moon, Aven Mindcensor - Extras in case they are especially useful in a particular matchup. These are probably the biggest open spots in the sideboard.
