Cards in question:
Blood Moon (http://magiccards.info/query?q=Blood+Moon&v=card&s=cname)
Fulminator Mage (http://magiccards.info/query?q=Fulminator+Mage&v=card&s=cname)

If I have a Blood Moon on the Battlefield, can my Fulminator Mage still target nonbasic lands that are effectively mountains? Would the answer to this then hold true for Molten Rain (http://magiccards.info/query?q=Molten+Rain&v=card&s=cname) as well?

Blood Moon is one of THE toughest cards to understand. BTW, is this a layering thing or a timestamp thing, or neither? Just curious.

Thank you for your time and effort in answering our questions. We appreciate it.

12/1/2004: Non-basic lands that are turned into Mountains with Blood Moon are still non-basic. Blood Moon does nothing to change the land's Supertype.

It's neither a layer nor a timestamp issue.

There's three part of a type line - supertype, type, and subtype.

"Basic" is an example of a land supertype. "Land" is an example of a type. "Mountain" is an example of a subtype, specifically a basic land subtype. "basic land subtype" refers to the five types of basic land, but not the Basic supertype - important not to get that confused.

Any land without the Basic supertype is non-basic (pretty easy).

There's a special rule that says when something turns a land into a basic subtype, that land loses all abilities and gains the ability of the basic land, but doesn't gain the Basic supertype.

So under Blood Moon, all non-basic lands are still non-basic, but gain the Mountain subtype, lose all other abilities, and gain the Mountain "T: add :r:" ability.
