Somebody learn me how this is done exactly. I've been told that you can stack Metathran Aerostat's activated ability in such a way whereby when the last activation on the stack resolves (first) and you return it to your hand, if the next activation on the stack is for cmc 4, you can choose the aerostat itself and when all further activations resolve the aeorostat stays in play since it is considered a new object and has no memory of the previous aerostat.

Do I have this right?

This creature's ability can be activated multiple times. As part of the resolution of its ability, you may put a creature card onto the battlefield. When you do, Metathran Aerostat is returned to your hand. Additional effects that resolve will only put a new creature onto the battlefield but will fail to find the originating Metathran Aerostat to return. Since this is part of the ability's effect and not a cost, the rest of the ability will continue without the missing pieces.

You are right in thinking that the ability looks to find the particular card that created the effect. If during the course of resolving the abilities you "blink" the same Aerostat in and out of the battlefield, it will not be counted as the same card.
