Does Tree of Redemption use its printed toughness for its life switch or does it use whatever toughness it currently is? For example, if it considers its current toughness, consider this chain of events:
I am at 20 life and Tree is equipped with a Sword of Feast and Famine.
I switch my life total with tree, setting my life to 13 and tree's toughness to 20. Tree is then a 2/22 due to the Sword.
Next turn, I switch my life total with tree, setting my life to 22 and tree's toughness to 13. Tree is then a 2/15 due to the Sword.
It seems as if every other activation would be a net gain of 2 life. Is this how the interaction works?

It uses whatever it's current toughness is, so your setup would work as you believe.

What its toughness currently is. Your life is set to 15, then 22 etc

Your setup doesn't quite work as stated. When you make the first switch, your life will become 15, because that's what the tree's toughness is. The tree's toughness will be 22 due to layering. In 7b, the toughness is set to 20, then in 7c the toughness is increased to 22 by the sword.
If you switch again, you go to 22 life, and the tree will have 15 + 2 = 17 toughness. Overall, you do gain 2 life every two switches. If the tree had dead weight or something, then you would lose 2 life every two switches.
613.3b Layer 7b: Effects that set power and/or toughness to a specific number or value are applied.
613.3c Layer 7c: Effects that modify power and/or toughness (but don't set power and/or toughness to a specific number or value) are applied.

Oh yeah his math was slightly off, but yes, you get a +2 net life gain every cycle of swapping.
