This thread and the activities herein are not endorsed by or affiliated with The Source website, we are simply utilizing the community space to facilitate the event. Please direct any issues or comments pertaining to SS 2011 to myself unless they are of a more general nature. Basically, the mods don't want to work out any problems with unhappy recipients or packages not sent, etc. and they don't want any negativity to reflect on the site. Obviously I expect that everyone who elects to join this year is going to honor their commitments and if unable, will take the initiative to contact myself with a valid explanation. Please do your part to make it a positive experience for all involved.

It’s that time of the year again, leaves are falling, students are failing and magic player feel like trading.
For those of you who don’t know what The Source Secret Santa is, it’s pretty simple. You look in your collection for some (nice) cards that you don’t really need, you get matched randomly with another sourcer and send him those cards. Another member will do the same for you. The object of this event is not to get great stuff for free (even if you can) but to have fun!

First, the basic rules for the main event: aka the gifts exange.(once again this is mostly copy/paste from Android last year event post,)

Each participant must PMs me their contact information (Name, address, etc.) acknowledging their commitment to this year's SS by November 30th. I'll do my best to match up people in close proximity to keep postage costs at a minimum and also to expedite delivery time.

The value limits/thresholds. is at least $25 worth of cards (and that doesn't mean 40/50¢ cards). Mostly the items should be Legacy staples so everyone would do well to post a wish list and if you like post some of what you intend to deliver as that will be incentive for others to raise the bar. Please add some fun stuff as well such as related Magic stuff (counters, playmats, whatever).

Obviously everyone is not going to be able to send out $200 worth of cards and the expectation is not there. If you do want to send out a big package, please don't expect that you'll automatically get the same value in return. This is about having fun and celebrating the Legacy community during the holidays. Judging from last year though, most participants were quite generous.


Now for the fun part! The contests!

Last year santa alters was a great success, this year I propose something a little bit different. Since most government and social organization are currently trying to censor Christmas (aka the wussification of Christmas), I propose that the theme for this year alter contest be: Politically correct winter celebration. Whatever that means is up to you

For the second contest I would take suggestion since I don’t have any good idea right now!

As usual we are counting on donation from anyone feeling generous for the contests prizes and participation prizes. I will be putting some stuff from my collection in there as well.
Also if anyone feels like giving me a hand, I would be grateful.

I sold most of my legacy collection to pay bills (and they banned survival =( ) so I'm looking for legacy cards mostly. The only deck I can build and play currently is U/W/r Stone-Blade which is my favorite deck currently (I love playing control / aggro-control and I love to brainstorm) but I'm looking to build something different. Eh, foil thoughtseize isn't even the most outrageously priced card on my list. Mana drain and foil polluted delta are the highest priced items and I don't really expect to get either. I just don't have a playset of thoughtseize so I put it down. If you want to send me a foil one go ahead but I'm not really expecting one.

And then I give you under 100 dollars worth of stuff so you just lose tons of value? I don't see the point. If you send me power, it's your decision but I'll live and probably trade it off or something for usable cards. And on that note mana drain is at most 130 a pop for english one unless it's BGS 10 or something. It isn't 300+ like pieces of power.

Anyways, a wishlist is a wishlist. I honestly don't expect people to send me any number of foil delta's except for 0. Unless I get paired with someone who has some really deep pockets that can send me a 100 dollar card without batting an eyelash.

I'm not really into foil, foreign, or "pimp" cards. My only stipulation is that the cards be black bordered - I loathe white bordered cards.

I wouldn't mind a really cool alter - but cool is relative. Personally things I might be interested to see worked into an alter would be themes relating to: Star Wars, any Martin Scorcese movie (take your pick I love them all), Wes Anderson films, Calvin and Hobbes (for fun), The Big Lebowski, any man from Game of Thrones (the women suck). I'm generally not into any sexy lady artwork or sloppy alters.

Does the alterations have to be with paints or pen and pencil, can we use something like Photoshop or illustrator? If not maybe do this for a secondary contest. We could do some sort of digital alteration of cards, seeing as not all of us are good with freehand. Something along the lines of edit a existing magic cards artwork with something holiday or seasonal related and give it a new flavor text, watermark, ect.

Super long time lurker here, and I think this is a good time to start participating with the community.

As far as what I can offer goes, I should probably apologize in advance. My collection is quite modest. While I can definitely fill most reasonable requests (or at least give generously), I will not be able to gift Foreign cards or foils; my budget doesn't allow for it.

Because of this, my wishlist is simple: Dredge commons and uncommons, and more importantly Dark Rituals, any type, any condition; it is one of my favorite cards and I want to have as many as possible.

Ummm, I guess I should add that maybe perhaps Wastelands would be super swell too.

Dont worry if you have a modest collection, as long as you send some nice stuff, ans nice dosn'nt mean 200$ of japanese foils!

Penguinizer as an example a fetchland or two and a few other things is a great package, fetchland will never go out of style! And who know you might end up paired with someone who just got into the format and with limited budget, in that case him getting a fetch or two would make an amazing gift since those cards are really vital in this format!

Dont be intimidated by all the talk about amazing package, they happen, they stand out, but they are not the norm, most people will send more modest package. Those who send absurd package are the one who can afford it and that are naturally generous, and giving that way to a complete stranger really speak about their caracter.

Also about the wislists, they are that WISHLIST, some pretty exorbitant stuff are put on these, and people realize that the chance of getting those rare, expensive cards in their package is pretty slim, but there's always a slim change you might get them, so a good wishlist should contain some reasonable stuff AND some far fetch stuff, who know you might luck out! Also you might not receive anything from your list, both are possible.

It is not abolut what you send it is about sharing.

I send a lot of stuff out becasue there is no legacy scene near me and I like to see magic cards used not gathering dust. But I also send stuff like artist proofs that the artist drew on the back of. Or cards that have been altered into full frame art. Or last year I send out a perfectly good Black lotus proxy I had been using just to give someone a heart attack when they opened their package and there was a black lotus in a top loader :)

I prefer to receive odd ball cards not tourney worthy cards for that reason.

One year I got a package that was foreign Serra Angels, and Icys. Because I collect them I valued them more then if it had been a single dual land or a playset of Japanese foils of a card.

I think it was last year I got a Legends tip card and a bunch of other odd ball items nothing worth a whole lot but cool and unique items.

I'm thinking about doing an alter of Diplomatic Immunity so that the picture is Soviet Santa Claus laughing in the face of M16's with candy canes shoved down the barrel. Problem is I'm abroad right now and I have a mock up but I don't have the art supplies necessary to alter. All I have is highlighters and black pens... I'm not a great artist or anything but I still would like to enter something for the contest. Does anyone know of any cheap art supplies I could use to make it happen?

My assignee had some odd ones, so I had to go find them and trade for them if I could. Should go out this coming week, and make it to him a week or so before Christmas. A total of 9-10 cards of real value and use, then something in the range of 15-30 cards that are meant for humor or little use. :laugh:

I would have liked to have sent everything at once, but due to the delivery time for the ebay stuff and the fact that I'll be at home for Christmas, it was either send it in pieces or have it come after Christmas (or possibly after New Years).

I'm in the middle of a LOT OF STUFF at the moment, doing your present, I have my final exams Wednesday and now I'm having problems with the significant other so I'd say that everything that could go wrong has just gone wrong, hard. I don't want to send half-assed present either, just sending few cards without altering / doing anything special and write off "happy christmas you wanker" and go on with my life thinking that I did good.

It's only a pain sending out from Canada to somewhere, into Canada isn't too bad. Most of the time, you can send cards as a letter instead of a parcel if the thing isn't more than so much weight and certain dimensions, otherwise you have to go parcel = infinite money.

I asked how much registered parcel to Europe was. I'd rather buy a blue dual, tbh.

Guess what: German customs office intercepted a letter I was to receive from the USA. They want me to come by there place and pay whatever duty they think is appropiate.

Seriously? Can't I just walk by and tell them it's a gift? Have you ever had to pay DUTY for Magic Cards?!

I had a similar problem once with a trade, luckily the lady at the customs was nice enough and believed the cards were traded and not bought and gave the letter without any payment :) Problem was caused by a high value that sender wrote on the customs form (over 25$), so someone at customs thought that I've bought the cards on ebay or smth - in that case I'd have to pay quite a lot. You should try going there and try to convince that this is a present - could try showing this thread if necessary.
Hope you'll get lucky with it - it's Christmas time after all ;)

If anything, show them the Secret Santa thread if you can. Tell them it's a gift, it's Christmas.

Most of the problem is, no offense to the person who sent it to you, listed a higher value and didn't mark it explicitly as a gift. Be more careful next time, Santa!

And yes, I've had to pay duty on stuff before, it can be up to 30% here. Make sure you argue it is a gift.
