It may not look like it on first blush, but this deck is actually a relative of both combo and Burn. It revolves around the various broken things you can do with Emrakul, the Aeons Torn. Anyone who is familiar with me/my decks will note that I generally have a few waiting in the wings. This one had been there until Innistrad made it seem more likely to succeed. I have had enough time now to do some preliminary testing suffice to say that the deck is formed well and can function against competitive decks. The question is how it will fare in the meta.
OK, here's the skinny on what the deck does and some basics on how to play it:
You have three speedy paths to victory, and they all require Emrakul in some fashion, so a well-timed Extirpate can make winning hard.
Wincon 1:
Show and Tell -> Emrakul
This is pretty well-trodden territory. I can't imagine there is much to say about it. If you have Show and Tell and Emrakul in hand, go for it.
Wincon 2:
Erratic Explosion -> Emrakul
It deals 15 damage on the spot. You will usually have to ping your opponent once to finish them off unless they are playing black. But the deck is full of these kinds of cards. Sensei's Divining Top is a pretty important card to have if you don't get this quickly.
Wincon 3:
Mindshrieker -> Emrakul
This is more disruptible than the other two, but it can also be a decent card for filtering out unneeded cards. There are a lot of tiny uses I am finding. It has not happened yet, but I bet it is nasty against tutors and opposing Divining Tops. At any rate, you often don't have to ping when you use this one because it does 16 and may have already hit once before you throw an alien at them.
NOTES:
You have to be very careful how you use your fetchlands. Generally speaking, you want to use them early rather than late because if you have a Top working and Emrakul in the top three, you would prefer to keep him there. This is not typically an issue though, as drawing Emrakul is a perfectly fine move. Show and Tell wants him there or just good old Brainstorm to make it all smooth out.
The deck can win without Emrakul, but it is weaksauce that way.
There is a lot of room for swapping out cards. I had Spell Pierce in for awhile. I had Vendilion Clique. I had Price of Progress. I may have to use Counterbalance. It is hard to come up with a certain 60.
I'd love to hear suggestions and opinions. And I apologize ahead of time for my inability to properly test this deck beyond generalities at this time. I just don't have the time.
