The last time Worlds Was in San Francisco, I was there playing in the type 1 side event. Pretty exciting stuff. It will be interesting to see if anything good in Legacy comes from the team portion.

Dave Caplan, member of the Legacy old guard and inventor of the Canadian Thresh deck that has recently seen such a resurgance just 2-0'd Brian Kibler to move to 5-0 on the day. Here's to hoping his streak continues. It would be nice to see one of ours perform well.

I also played in a Type 1 side event the last time Worlds was in San Francisco.
I was playing UR Fish.

I will be there tomorrow and Sunday. I'll play in as many vintage/legacy side events as possible and the main Legacy event on Sunday.
We have a posse of Legacy players in SF that we have grown over some time now and many will be present.

Some of the West Coast Legacy crew is heading up to play in the side events for this weekend. I don't think that there are any scheduled Vintage events however.

Funny. I played a UGR Fish player in the second round. I stomped a mudhole in him one game with Holy Light. I played it and he looked at me funny and said "Holy Light?" I asked him if he needed to read it and he proceeded to show me a binder page full of them. It was janky, but it really did do a number to Fish. Every creature they had was 1-toughness. Goodbye Razorfin Hunter. Goodbye Cloud of Faeries. Goodbye River Boa!

David Caplan ended up 6-0 and undefeated in Day 1. Here's a link to the video of Rich Hagon talking to him about his deck:

I was surprised too, I watched the video earlier today, when it appeared on my youtube subscriptions, and I had to re-watch it now because a) I missed the Nimble Mongoose reference, and b) I didn't realize it was this David Caplan (I'm still a bit unsure :))

He's up to 10-2. 3-2-1 in Modern will T8. So if he performs like he has been, he's a shoe-in!

Way to go Dave Caplan! Would be awesome to see this stupid ass video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uu1L5X727aw) have another concrete counterexample.

Only two people ahead of him right now— Conley Woods (12-0) and the infamous Craig Wescoe (10-2 with better breakers). LSV, Paulo Vitor DDR, Matthias Hunt (Minnesota represent!), and Tobias Gräfensteiner also at 10-2 but with worse breakers than Caplan. CF crew tearing it up.

Fucking awesome to see Matthias in contention for Worlds top 8 though. One of the nicest players you'll ever meet.

EDIT: Three rounds left. Caplan has moved up to second, tied at 36 points with Levy, LSV, PV, and Yuki Yoshioka. Conley's still in first sitting at a cool 42. Matthias, unfortunately, has gone 0-3 so far in the Modern portion, pushing him back to 32nd place.

Dave's locked into the T8. I was really scared for a bit; he sent me the domain zoo listing last night and I put it together on Workstation this morning and played out a few games. I was not at all happy with it. I think I lost less life playing Suicide Black back in the day with Flesh Reavers. But it did well enough to get him the 3-3 he needed to lock up T8.

I'm so happy to see him T8, especially given that he went 6-0 in Standard day one beating luminaries like Kibler en route to an undefeated day. If he can do that in the T8, we may have a World Champion that's a well-known Legacy player and like you said, we can shut Bill Stark up. Of course, he's lost three times to Conley (in the draft portion and tonight) and I think he's lost to PVDR and LSV today, meaning all 5 of his losses were to CFB members who are also in the T8. And he's still got to play more on MODO tonight. That's got to put a strain on a man.

I'm hoping he switches up the Modern deck for the MODO portion to something a little stronger. We shall see. If he manages to win both, that would be one for the record books.

Cool to see a Legacy player in the T8. Man, he's got a rough road ahead though. CFB is wrecking Worlds with none of the 4 players playing each other in the quarterfinals!

Caplan has to go through PVDR in the quarterfinals...

Also an interesting Maverick list from Norway for the Legacy portion of the team finals. Splash r with Punishing/Grove.

It has not much to do with the format as whole (which is actually quite diverse right now) and everything to do with the fact that CFB are leaps and bounds ahead of everyone else right now.

Also, I think they are still doing swiss standings to decide who goes first, so that part of your claim is equally asinine.

CFB is the new YMG. It's a collection of the best in the business. Having 4 in the T8 just shows that LSV has gone out of his way to collect the best players in the world.

Caplan just beat PV! Looks like Wescoe is about to be knocked out by Conley as well. LSV/Richard Bland going to game five.

LSV just lost a very close game five. Was land light for a large portion of the game, and had the win if he'd have ripped a land on his last draw. Bland and Caplan on to the semifinals. Josh Utter-Leyton and Jun'ya Iyanaga onto game four, Iyanaga up 2-1. Josh wins PoY if he wins Worlds, otherwise Owen Turtenwald gets that title (since PV just got eliminated). Wescoe just forced a game four against Conley.

Hell no!
Man, this feels just wrong... . There goes all the entertaining aspect of Worlds within seconds.
All charismatic players have been wiped out in such an awkward way. As I got to know how much of an awesome Top8 this could have been (with all that tense from the PotY), I am truly disappointed right now, cant even find the right words for it.
What are we going to see now, Captain Mc Shuffler annoying the F**K outta everyone while having Slagstorm in each opener?
Not even talking about that nonsense of lucking with Bloodbraid Elf in the MOCS, is it just me or did someone else (hopefully) noticed that Reid got Vampirics for free like 4 times or so?
Not that I am surprised that the card is nuts or something but seeing the game won just by that freakin Elf was incredibly lame/unskilled if you ask me, even if I think that his Victory was well deserved in general.

Japan would've won the Legacy match, but I would've liked to have seen it, especially after Norway had won G2 by surviving an Emrakul attack.

So many punts in that Modern game...

That is a good question.
I was kinda distracted by slinging fire at eachothers faces.
While you say that, I think that might have turned the game around dramatically, would be sad if that was on purpose (which it might have been though, but in the end it is way easier to dirt that off because it really looks like a small punt).
I am in general pretty unhappy not with the performance of the japanese players, but with their behaviour during the game. They seemed to kinda really tried to break games down to a staring contest from time to time (to an borderline penalty level) to get some sort of advantage, mainly because they are way better at staying calm in general (well, thats what it looks like at least).
The top of that in my oppinion was the Semifinals from Conley. You could literally read in his face: "Ok, I am pretty far ahead, why not piss him off a little with slowing down the game/shuffling significant to ensure the last game falls into my hands easily."
Dont get me wrong, I think it is totally fine using each advantage you can get as long as its fair, but this was so damn borderline that I am naturally driven away from liking the player to the slightest level (which is odd, he might be a very decent player allover).
I heard some other japanese Pro-player had some issues with stalling/slowplay too, so I for myself would show some respect to other players but more important to myself and dont behave like a narcoleptic sloth in coma to obtain those mental advantages (which are obviously really important if you play Magic on such a high level) surreptitiously.

Esper3k
11-20-2011, 08:16 PM
How is it any sort of penalty gaining action to sit quietly when your opponent is doing things?

As long as you're not rude or slow playing, keeping calm under pressure is something most would think would be a good thing.

"As long as you're not rude or slow playing, keeping calm under pressure is something most would think would be a good thing. "

-That might be correct in general but a judge told him twice, at the second time that this will end up in a warning, to play faster. He looked like a million times at his hand and the boardstate for several times when there was no real decision-tree (not that there is one in general when you play Rampant Growth into Slagstorm into Titan...) which had also nothing to do with making sure not to do a misplay. He made it into the Top8 so he cant be that slow.
One thing is playing safe and doublecheck and the other is, as you said, slow play.

Esper3k
11-21-2011, 08:55 AM
Yeah, I know Iyanaga got asked to shuffle faster, etc. but I am unaware of any of the Japanese nationals team members getting warnings for slow playing.
