That's right legacy lovers, Tom "I hate fun cards" LaPille is moving to D&D R&D. Meaning he is now out of our hair and we can all relax a little about Wizards destroying our beloved format.

YES! No more ginger ruining our fun. At least D&D is better suited for "House Rules" moreso than competitive Magic formats.

Or better yet... race tomtroll!
I think I understand his positioning now that I see he has been thinking about moving on. Most folks that are planning on leaving a job mentally 'leave' much earlier than they physically leave. It's human nature to start preparing for the new venture while giving lower priority and bad performance to the old one you haven't left yet.
He's still a pile of douchebag bullshittery.
New playable race in the next edition: Great Sable Stag!
I think you meant this would be the prestige class for the Sable Stag rage.

I just hope the format/game's direction is much improved and that they promote someone who has a better understanding of what is good for the game.

QFT. It's better than 4th Edition in every way.
I actually think that either Eric Lauer or Mike Turian would be good candidates for Development team leader. They both have sharp minds for balancing out constructed play, and in the case of Turian, is a limited genius.

Well, WotC created "D&D" hasn't existed since the release of the 4th Edition and disowning of all the previous editions. There isn't much left for him to destroy there, the current executives have done a marvellous job at it already. Thank god 3.5, for all its problems, was saved by the OGL and the SRD, something WotC holds no power over any longer.

Coming soon, D&D 5th Edition: top-down designed with a 1950s-era gangster feel! All dice are replaced with coins to flip! All previous classes replaced with: Dames, Irish Mobster, Mafioso, Crooked Cop, FBI, and lovable elderly shopkeeper that gets gunned down in crossfire.
Also @Kevin: wtf is that video man? Quit making me feel old by reminding me that I absolutely loathe everything that appeals to teenagers.

I think you're alone in that opinion. Ironically, I was just thinking the opposite. The only thing that would've made that announcement better was if it had come from Aaron Forsythe and read, "we're shipping Tom "Gentleman's Agreement" LaPille over to D&D. We recognize that Magic players have had enough of his bullshit and that it's time for a change. We're making this move as a peace overture to all the people we've pissed off with our OP changes."

Few things bring people together like LaPille being pushed out. Just look at the people who generally disagree with each other in complete agreement that the Great Sable Stag himself leaving is a great thing. It must really suck to be so bad at your job that people cheer when you're kicked out of it.

Imho WotC saw overextended and tried to copy its success. The attempt failed so hard that the responsible for the project has now been fired. I feel bad for the man, but the situation was arguably worse for him than for us, having to manage things while being hated by most of the community isn't exactly a good way to work and could only bring about more bad things.
Verhey is now an intern (developer? dunno) at R&D. I suspect he'll be one of the new developer of modern, or something along those lines. For the short time he managed overextended, i actually had the pleasure of having a lot of discussions on his board about bannings/unbanning, and i found his line of thinking always reasonable and pretty liberal in respect to bans/unban. I think he would be a good person to manage the B&R lists in eternal formats. Hope this is a good signs for things to come. Maybe a MM onward eternal formats? Here i come!

That's because Verhey can communicate with people. I completely agree that he is a huge step up over LaPille. But I really think it is much more than just Overextended v Modern. I think (hope) WotC realized how bad LaPille was at communicating with people and stuffed him in a closet somewhere he wouldn't have to talk to customers.

More important, Tom was just a "soft spokesman" and didn't really deserve all of the demonization he got. A lot of the decisions he was blamed for were made by committee. He's not (or wasn't, anyway) the head of development or even the senior-most developer. As far as ban decisions go, the reasons he gave us may have just been paraphrased versions of the actual reasons R&D came up with, making him less at fault.
Regardless, it feels like WotC has had a lot of PR blunders these past couple of years. I don't know if Zac Hill will be any more effective as a communicator (we'll see when Brainstorm gets banned), but bad/obfuscating/missing PR seems like an issue the entire company has.

The "gentleman's agreement" was the reason why Mystical Tutor decks weren't completely dominating tournaments smaller than GPs. Basically, when the stakes were relatively low, players agreed to not play their ridiculously overpowered, broken, dominating Mystical Tutor decks and instead play worse decks that were more fun or something.

Great Sable Stag was his "ultimate Solution" to Blue and counterspells in Legacy and he called people basically dumb Not to run it.
Modern topic is pretty new. You can find it on the mothership.
He wonders why Control is unplayable in modern but doubts it Could have anything to do with his B&R management that anhilated control and combo. Then he asumed that the fact that nobody plays modern in paper is only because that people are to dumb to create Decks themselves but want "guidance" from pro's aka decklists for netdecking

That's hilarious.
But to be fair, the hoser that would be required to be the "ultimate solution" to blue and counterspells in Legacy would need to be dirt cheap (read: free), uncounterable, fitting into every deck (while also screwing you over if you play blue) and so incredible devestating that they couldn't print it, simply because it would ruin Standard.

Which is sad, because I have some inside knowledge about what most of the pros are going to be playing today and it's not all that fantastic.

I didn't read much of TLP's articles and utterances, but from what I did read (Gentleman's Agreement, Great Sable Stag, Dredge, Double-Faced cards) it certainly seems that it is a good thing that he is no longer involved in the MtG decision-making process.
The one thing that I feel is one of the worst things ever conceived is the Double-Faced cards (only 2nd to changing the card face in 2003- Imo, the most loathed and, by far, the worst and most gut-sinking decision made in the history of the game). I recall reading that it was Toms' idea and, should that truly be the case, he should have gone more than a year ago.

On the double-faced cards, I'm starting to think that they're just using new templates for each new expansion to mess with the people at Magic Set Editor. I start making a ton of high quality proxies for use at home to test legacy and play casually. In a relatively short time span, we've had the new 4-ability planeswalker for jace 2.0, the colorless template for eldrazi, the phyrexian mana symbol, and now double-faced cards. Compare this to all the older expansions which worked perfectly fine (probably better), and they didn't need new templating tricks. In fact, they even eliminated the few useful things that they had invented, namely Tribal and the gravestone icon for flashback. It's like they're trying to change as much as possible with each new expansion, and for no conceivable reason.
