Hey guys, just wanted to make you aware of these Value Packs they're selling at Target. Essentially they seem to be repackaging 'opened' returns and offering them for cheap. Really cheap. They're pretty hit and miss, but you can see what you're getting before you buy. The one I got had a complete Political Puppets commander set (just the 100 normal sized cards) still wrapped in plastic, a complete Fire and Lightning precon (just the cards, still in plastic) and a Mirrodin Besieged booster pack, all for $9.99! Pretty ridiculous. The rest looked kinda janky so I only got the one, but there's the potential for good cheap stuff out there!

Interesting!

Sadly, it wouldn't work in my area since there's a guy who goes around to all the Targets and Wal-Marts, buys fat packs, precons, etc., takes out all the money cards then returns the rest...

You can see the cards you're getting, and see whether or not they're still sealed in the plastic they came in. All the sets I saw had all the cards still sealed.

Since when do stores allow returns of opened product? That's seriously retarded.

I doubt they have even the slightest understanding of the product. They probably think of it like a 'classic' card game. Why would someone open a playing card deck and keep just the king of spades?

Your bigger stores like Wal-Mart are employed by people who aren't making very much (and so they don't have much incentive to care) and don't know what it is anyways. If you just say "it was defective", they're just going to return your money instead of looking through and checking.

Thanks for the tip, I'll be on the look out.

At all of my local Targets (there are 3 of them within a 5 min drive from my house) they keep the Magic cards near the registers with all the baseball cards, not with board games or playing cards. I know that they wouldn't allow opened baseball card packs to be returned, so it makes no sense that they would allow the return of opened Magic packs.

Also, I've had to return unopened items before (I bought the "wrong" sewing machine for an ex) and Wal-mart gave me a really hard time about those types of items.

I guess that's why I'm just flabbergasted that stores would allow this.

Targets limit the dollar amount you can return per year and you must have the original receipt.

Walmarts don't require a receipt in exchange for store credit, but limit the amount of returns you can make a year.

My mom once worked in the jewelry section of walmart in my area and she had people returning items with kohls tags still attached.
When she refused, she was told by management to do it, then later on was explained walmart will get some amount of refund credit even on items not theirs and is better to make the person happy so they will come back.
I mean I saw a person in front of me return a half eaten birthday cake and on another occasion take used crossword puzzles back.

From what I understand, you get refunds in the form that you paid in. If you paid in cash, you get cash back and I'm guessing they probably can't track that.

Yeah, apparently at least with Wal-Mart, their distributors take the brunt of the cost of returns. Wal-Mart just loads that stuff up onto a big pallet and sends it back for a huge refund of their own.

Yea, it's the same with vendor coupons. Obviously, the store just loses the face value of those coupons, but then they can send the coupons to the vendor to get that money back.

I know from working at Lowes they do the same thing. We get tons of stuff back from Walmart, Menards, Home Depot, Kmart, etc. And we just return it, file it under the misc in our computer and send it back to the RTM cage to have it shipped off.

I might check this out though. Wouldn't mind getting another random EDH deck to have available or to loan out.

It's not like those are a WotC product; they're something a distributor throws together to move excess inventory. As such, availability is going to be highly variable.
