Petrified Field

I was trying to find whether it is legal to target petrified field with its own ability.

For reference I checked Ghost Quarter where is stated that its possible to target it with its own ability, but the effect is countered because land is no longer on battlefield.

I believe that using Petrified field in similar way is not possible because it is not in graveyard yet, so if there is no land in graveyard there is no way of... However this confuses me...

tap, Sacrifice: return target land from graveyard...

I am not sure when the actual targetting occurs and where the Petrified field is at that time.

Targets are announced before paying costs, so all the lands you mention are on the battlefield at the time, which is why Ghost Quarter can target itself but Petrified Field cannot.

4) Divide effects
5) Determine total cost
6) Activate mana abilities
7) Pay total cost in any order

Announce (put the spell on the stack)
Choose (modes and additional costs to pay,such as "X")
Target (if applicable)
How (it will affect it's targets if there are options)
Total (the cost you will pay, mana, sacrificing, etc...)
Mana (tap resources and/draw mana from your pool)
Pay (make other "payments", goat's blood, land, life, etc...)
