In addition to GP: Indy, there are 2 more (1 additional US GP)
Atlanta USA June 30-July 1, 2012 Legacy
Gent Belgium July 21-22, 2012 Legacy

After August, there might be a small chance of another Legacy GP (perhaps in Asia?)

Well, I guess it's an improvement over last year, but I'm a little bit bitter that they only gave the west coast one GP, and it's the absolute crappiest one.
They really wasted Los Angeles as a GP location on block constructed? Why couldn't they have stuck the other American Legacy tournament in a city where there is already a vibrant Legacy community?

There's still Q3/Q4. I'd put money on 2 more legacy GPs, one on the US west coast and one in east Asia.
I'm disappointed GP Boston is M13 limited, but I'm happy Atlanta is legacy. Going to try to make it to both if personal finances allow.
Legacy in Asia would probably be held in Japan (due to player count) but I do hope to see it somewhere "nearer" (meaning cheaper air fare).
Philippines does have a decent headcount of legacy players compared to any country active in m:tg in SEA region so that's another place to consider.
Regardless this will be something to look forward to.

Atlanta has pretty large Legacy tournaments every week, so... they did that.

San Fran or LA for a Legacy GP would be great. I'd definitely go.

I thought that Wizards changed up the schedule and now only had 3 PTs so there would only be 3 "Seasons" of GPs instead of 4 Quarters. Could be wrong there, but I dont see them fitting in 2 more seasons from September to early December.

Seems like each season gets 1 Japan GP and 1 other east asian GP. I'm hoping for Taiwan (because of family ties), at least to get some sort of GP in the third season. After all, they do print magic in an entire separate language just for them. But then again, Korea would probably get some love before Taiwan.

No doubt, GP Indy in March when we will have like a foot of snow. Seems like they got their events all screwed up, should have done Indy in June/July when it is warmer and Atlanta in March when it is not so freaking hot.
My guess is a GP so close to Gencon isn't their idea of a good business model. Then again, when has anyone ever accused them of that?

Hmm, Indianapolis is covered in snow during March? I might need to invest in actualy winter gear for once in my life.

There are also significantly more Legacy areas within travel distance of a GP on the East Coast versus the West Coast. A Legacy GP on the West Coast, even in a big Legacy area like LA or San Francisco, likely wouldn't draw as many people as a Legacy GP on the East Coast. Remember, the last three Legacy GPs in the US had ~1200 people each - most of them traveling from various areas in the region.
But how many of them would actually fly to the other side of the country to play in a Legacy GP?

Well I live 2 hours north of there, so hopefully my experience is accurate. They typically get less snow down there than we tend to get up here near Chicago, but we had weather in the 50s and 60s in December so mother nature is just now letting the snow fly (expecting up to 8 inches tonight (that's what she said)).
I'm hoping the weather will be nice in March, but I'd bring more than just that same old black t-shirt you wear while pwning things in SCG events!
Are you for sure attending?

I'm scoping out flights and hotel, but haven't committed yet. Hotel isn't affordable unless I can get 3 more people to go in with.

If you get desperate to find a place, let me know. Me and the rest of the crew are planning on finding a hotel late Friday night and might be able to shove you in the closet or something!

I'm hoping New Zealand actually gets a GP. Last one we had was in... 2007, and I wasn't playing during that time.
Although it's either gonna be standard or sealed, I can't see a Legacy GP in New Zealand... sadface

I don't mind flying further away, as long as it's another major airport so the cost is reasonable (and not Hell on Earth like ATL or ORD). I think the more important factor on the East coast is better accessibility by car.

I wish Connecticut would get some love, Have one in providence last year was awesome other than me not being able to attend due to the copious amounts of vomit from the flu lol.
I am waiting on more information on GP Boston, but as it looks now I wont be attending, I dislike limited(read: too broke to practice enough), so it seems like a lost cause.

I stayed in Connecticut before and after GP Providence. I'm kinda wanting to do that again for Boston. As for Indy, no one knows if snow will be on the ground. At least in Chicago it will hit 60 randomly some afternoon and all the snow melts. And Indianapolis has an elevated enclosed pedestrian walkway that connects all of the hotels, the convention center, the mall, and Lucas Oil. Its possible to never go outside.

I wasn't aware of it connecting to Lucas Oil. I remember it connecting from the parking garage to the convention center when we went to Gencon and previous SCG events.
Are you sure it connects to Lucas Oil?

it used to connect to the RCA dome. unsure about LOF.

I guess I'm not really that sure. I think I'm just remembering it connecting to RCA.

They've also expanded the Convention Center a lot. I would have to believe it all connects pretty well.
So this years trip is going to be to Gent, sounds nice. Gonna try going topp 64 in my third straight legacy GP.

Well, only 3 seasons. Also, Taipei Taiwan is there!
San Francisco USA October 13-14, 2012
Philadelphia USA October 27-28, 2012
Lyon France November 3-4, 2012
Auckland New Zealand November 3-4, 2012
Chicago USA November 10-11, 2012
Bochum Germany November 17-18, 2012
Taipei Taiwan November 24-25, 2012
San Antonio USA November 24-25, 2012
Lisbon Portugal December 1-2, 2012
Toronto Canada December 8-9, 2012
Nagoya Japan December 8-9, 2012
Which ones will be Legacy?
Basaka

Probably one of the US ones, and Lisbon. Don't quote me on that though.
Also, why is GP Auckland RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE of my exams? I was excited about a possible GP in NZ... what horrible dates :(

My assumption is that they try to keep Legacy events accessible by car for the largest amount of people. For most of the East Coast and Mid-West Atlanta, Indy, Rhode Island, and Columbus are within the reasonable driving range even if it's a long haul on the order of 12-14 hours it can still be done in a day for the most part.
California is a nightmare impossible drive for anyone not already pretty close, and even if it's only 6-10 hours drive most of it is going to be desert driving which seems shitty. WotC is a lot smarter than people probably give them credit for. They have access to a database of DCI #'s which are linked to specific areas. It would be pretty easy given such a database to run it through some code and have it spit out the average # of active Legacy players within a 3, 6, 9, 12 hour drive of possible GP locations. There's a lot you can do with data like that if you have the urge. I'm guessing if you added up all the Legacy players in America the closest mean distance would be about Columbus or Indy which would explain why almost every major American Legacy tournament up until recently when they decided to expand the GP schedule took place within 6 hours of one of these areas(Legacy GPs + Legacy and Vintage Worlds @ GenCon).
I still wouldn't be surprised to see a West Coast Legacy event for last quarter 2012 in San Fran though I also wouldn't be surprised not to. I figure there reasoning is that Legacy is a smaller format than any other GP event and since having and event on the West Coast means most people even in the MidWest / South-West are still going to have to fly anyways they might as well fly the smaller # of players out to the MidWest or East Coast and have a larger amount of people be within a reasonable drive.

The turnout for the legacy GPs is always huge and the format isn't that inaccessible. I think they keep it to a few a year to keep players happy because there's really no sense in not running them if the turnout is going to be 1500+.

I think about 3 legacy GPs is reasonable, everything else would be almost pushing it. Lets not forget that there are other big legacy events firing up.. those of you living in the USA are quite lucky with the SCG tournaments and in Europe we have BoM and few other smaller ones, but it's still ok.
Indeed the format is not that inaccessible as some would like to picture it.

I wouldn't worry too much about this. Wizards' prerogative was never to promote Legacy at the expense of other formats.
Locally (in Seattle), there are still many Legacy events available, whereas the TOs I've spoken to have had a hard time getting reasonable turnouts at Modern events (unless there is a PTQ or something associated with it). Similarly, SCG's Legacy circuit is a big boon to our format, which keeps it thriving.
I would only be somewhat concerned if SCG drops Legacy in favor of Modern, which seems unlikely in the near future. I see Modern as an annoying format because it drives up the prices of Legacy staples (at least those that are legal in Modern), but I don't see it as a threat to the long-term viability of Legacy unless cards like Force of Will and Wasteland are printed in Modern sets.
