Mission: abuse the hell out of Mimic Vat. The utility and card advantage in this deck is surprisingly good--between Eternal Witness and Primal Command you're searching for AND recurring any creature you want. Mimic Vat itself is just gravy.

//Land 22
4 Forest
4 Misty Rainforest
4 Verdant Catacombs
1 Phyrexian Tower
4 Swamp
1 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
4 Bayou

//21 Creatures
4 Veteran Explorer
4 Sakura-Tribe Elder
4 Wall of Blossoms
1 Scavenging Ooze
3 Eternal Witness
1 Kitchen Finks
1 Obstinate Baloth
1 Acidic Slime
2 Grave Titan

//17 Spells
4 Innocent Blood
4 Cabal Therapy
3 Mimic Vat
4 Damnation
2 Primal Command

//Sideboard (a work in progress)
4 Hymn to Tourach
3 Krosan Grip
4 Memoricide
4 Leyline of the Void

Card choices
Veteran Explorer/Sakura-Tribe Elder/Wall of Blossoms: This isn't a tempo deck so you need card advantage, acceleration, and chump blockers. These fit those roles perfectly.
Eternal Witness: Great for yanking Innocent Blood, Damnation, or Primal Command from your graveyard so you can maintain control of the battlefield.
Scavenging Ooze: For handling your opponent's graveyard and gaining a few extra life.
Kitchen Finks/Obstinate Baloth/Acidic Slime/Grave Titan: Excellent come-into-play abilities that are great for Mimic Vat.
Innocent Blood/Damnation: The best creature control cards, period. Fast and efficient. Useful for getting your own creatures to the graveyard for Mimic Vat as well.
Primal Command: An awesome utility card for creature-search and delicious life gain.

Cards not used
Shriekmaw: There are lots of good Black and Artifact creatures around now-a-days, so it's Evoke isn't terribly impressive. As a beater he's ineffective for the same reason.
Skinrender: He was originally in the list, but Damnation is just too good to pass up for the 4cc slot. Sorry Skinrender.

This seems like a nice idea, but wouldn't it fit much better in a modern shell, rather than legacy?
It seems to me that the utility crds (witness, Vat, sakura, etc) are all modern. In legacy I think you will suffer with this being far too slow.

I think you're absolutely right that most of it would fit better in Modern than in Legacy--it actually came from a Modern deck I've been working on. Seeing Nic Fit is what made me think that maybe the core could be adapted to Legacy just as well.

edit: I posted a list for Modern http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/showthread.php?23051-Deck-BG-Vat&p=615415#post615415

This is a cool deck idea, but I agree, I think this works way better in modern. The engine is too slow and not powerful enough to be competitive in legacy.

Nice thing about this, you lose so little when you port this over to modern.
