View Full Version : Unique targets for replicate?

When you announce a spell that has replicate, you can choose to pay the replicate cost multiple times, thereby copying the spell. You "may choose new targets" for each copy.

Do the targets have to be unique? For example, if Chalice of the Void (with 1 counter) is the only artifact that can be legally targeted, can I play Shattering Spree, paying R for its replicate cost, have two or more copies target the Chalice (with the intention of having the first one get countered by Chalice's triggered ability but subsequent copies finishing the job)?

you get your desired result.

However, in your example it is even easier. When the replicate trigger resolves, it creates a copy of the spell. The created copy also copies chosen targets, so it will target Chalice of the void, too. You donīt even need to chose a new target...

Yep - the copies have the target of the original spell. Copies copy all announcement choices, including targets.

Replicate copies don't have to target the original target though.

So would this work?:
Chalice @ 1 and Artifact in play.
You cast Shatering spree and replicate it once. you target the Artifact with the Original, and the chalice with the replicate copy.

How would the stack work with the replicate copy and the chalice trigger?
Does it go Spree, Replicate, Chalice Trigger?
Or can you stack it Spree, Chalice Trigger, Replicate?
If you can stack it Spree, Chalice Trigger, Replicate, then you could destroy the chalice with the replicate copy and have your original Spree resolve (since the chalice trigger checks the Chalice in play for counters, if the original chalice is destroyed there is nothing for the trigger to check).

Does that work? Or does Chalice always go on the stack AFTER replicate copies? Does the spell's caster have any control over how Chalice triggers?

The Chalice trigger would go on after the replicate trigger so it would look like

Shattering Spree > Replicate > Chalice

The Shattering Spree would still be countered by the Chalice trigger even if it was destroyed because it would use last known information for the Chalice
