View Full Version : Starting Legacy in Northern California
Hello!
I am a long-time player, as are most of my friends. I got into Legacy because two mutual friends decided to up the ante and play more expensive decks. However, one of them moved away and the other is busy with other things. I don't want to give up my decks and hoping more people would be interested in the format. Most everyone I have come into contact with have this idea that Legacy is far more expensive then Standard and it's a waste of time. I want to see that change.
I live in Sacramento, CA and know there are eternal format players. There is no place for them to come out and play. I want to see people play and hopefully host a tournament. But then comes what to do for prizes and spreading the word. I work at a hobby shop that just opened and see this place as a great opportunity to get players out and spread the word.
There are a few of us nearby in Davis and Woodland. Drom's in Davis has hosted a couple of Legacy tournaments and one Vintage tournament in the last year, but the turn out for all of them was quite underwhelming (Vintage had the most people due to some traveling from the Bay Area (and the guy that won was actually from out of state on a business trip)). We have a small playgroup (read: 3-4 of us) that do Vintage/Legacy/EDH (preferably with beer) when we get a chance. We used to manage once a week in Davis, but recently scheduling has been problematic so we're sort of on temporary hiatus except when everyone's schedules converge.

I do know Sac and Davis has a lot of eternal player also. I used to go to Davis every few weeks to get some EDH fix, but now with me working full time I haven't been there for ages. By the way, we do have a legacy group in San Francisco. Our FB page link is in my sig. Feel free to join us. I think we have few people on there from Davis area too. Our group is going to go to SCG Sacramento this March. Hope to see you there.

"A lot" would be a gross exaggeration. There's maybe 5 tops in Davis, including myself.
I'm a member of that facebook group and I've traveled to San Jose on occasion to play with you guys at Superstars, but it's still quite a trek to get there and is limited entirely to a weekend every couple months.
What is the name of your hobby shop, OP? I'd love to support tournaments, and prizes can just be store credit if there's a singles collection. I haven't played legacy in weeks due to scheduling conflicts, as aahz pointed out; but I'm itching for it. Also: Vintage.
Also: Vintage.
I knew you'd come around once BC and I started putting Vintage decks in your hands and getting you to actually play the format.
Sclabman is right though. If there are lots of eternal players in Davis/Sac, I have not come across them. I think there is a bit of a Modern scene at Drom's, but no one seems to take any serious interest in Legacy/Vintage. I would definitely come out to play tournaments (Legacy and/or Vintage) in Sac if there were any (schedule permitting, of course).

I've all but dropped Legacy for Modern as that's really the only format I can both stand and play while living here (Boo Standard/Drafting). Modern gets 6-14ish at Drom's, but I really haven't heard of much of a Legacy scene. I'd probably go to a tournament or two for Legacy but my schedule is pretty full now too (and I try to use my free day or so to play the Modern tournament here).
If you start one up let us know!

I'd probably get more into modern if I had any semblance of faith in WotC to not nullify all efforts into acquiring decks (via the ban list). I'm not a huge fan of the player-base at Drom's all that much either.
Yes, aahz, vintage is pretty sweet. Especially with no proxies! I keep thinking of sweet deck ideas.
I am at 2920 Arden Way, Suite A. I show up on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays in the afternoon about 3 pm. I really want to make this a regular thing. Doesn't have to be just tournaments, I want to see a community where we discuss and play for fun. Sure, people in my city play Commander and Standard, but I want to see something different! I want to see more formats played.
