Taking the core concept of CounterTop, I tried to add new flavors:
Creatures
2 Thrun, the last Troll
1 Kuldotha Phoenix
Countermagic
4 Force of Will
3 Counterbalance
3 Daze
Tutoring
3 Intuition
Artifacts
4 Chalice of the Void
4 Scroll Rack
2 Vedalken Shackles
2 Engineered Explosives
2 Loxodon Warhammer
Misc
3 Punishing Fire
2 Jace, the Mind Sculptor
2 Seismic Assault
2 Life from the Loam
Lands
3 Tropical Island
3 Volcanic Island
3 Grove of the Burnwillows
2 Scalding Tarn
2 Misty Rainforest
2 Wooded Foothills
2 High Market
1 Island
1 Forest
1 Mountain
1 Academy Ruins
1 Wasteland
Sideboard
4 Quiet Disrepair
3 Vexing Shusher
3 Scavenging Ooze
3 Firespout
2 Ancient Grudge
Key ideas of the deck / gameplan:
- Play Chalice @ 1 as soon as possible to annoy a decent number of legacy decks
- get a Scroll Rack plus Counterbalance or Loam online
- Kill with
----> Seismic Assault and Loam are available
----> Thrun, the Last Troll (plus Loxodon Warhammer)
----> Kuldotha Phoenix (plus Loxodon Warhammer)
The mana curve of the deck is optimized for counterbalance purposes:
CC0: 24 cards
CC1: 0 cards
CC2: 15 cards
CC3: 9 cards
CC4: 4 cards
CC5: 5 cards
Synergies / combos:
1) Counterbalance + Scroll Rack: more reliable lock than with top; this decks does not need the combination of Counterbalance AND Sensei's Top to close the CC1 slot: Instead of Seinsei's Top, Chalice@1 is played
2) Scroll Rack + Life from the Loam: 2 extra cards per turn for 2G mana; putting 3 lands from loam on top of library, exchange 3 cards with Rack, dredge 3 cards (the three lands) with loam: old school quantitative card advantage.
3) Thrun, the Last Troll plus Loxodon Warhammer
4) Kuldotha Phoenix plus Loxodon Warhammer; Phoenix can be searched via Intuition and played from graveyard
5) in rare rare cases Acedemy Ruins flip artifact from grave on top of library for counterbalance purposes
6) high market upgrades vedalken shackles to butchery
7) Life from the Loam + Seismic Assault, the classic burn-combo. Damage varies from 6 per Turn (1 Loam) up to 18 Damage per turn (2 Loams used in combination with Jace, replacing the normal draw and the first two Jace draws [using the 0-ability])
8) Grove of the Burnwillows + Punishing Fire, if not used for board control then can be used for Scroll Rack / Loam tricks
You guys will cardchoicewise wonder about the crap common "Quiet Disrepair":
Deck has troubles with red burn. Therefore the Loxodon Warhammer lifegain is not suffient / to late. After testing some cards (Chill, Zuran Orb, Jitte, Nourish etc.), Quiet Disrepair comes out as a clear winner. Effects of multiple Disrepairs add up. If not used against burn decks, they serve as additional Enchantment/Artifact removal together with Ancient Grudge.
What about the deck and its core concepts? Any improvement ideas?
Thx for your comments.
