View Full Version : DCI Ratings gone...

So as recently as Friday, I could still check my DCI Rating on the old webapp. It was updated with new stuff, meaning I had my rating as of GP Lincoln's results. Today, I logged in to the webapp and I can still update my personal information, but all of the event history, including ratings, is gone. I realize that rating had no meaning anymore, but I still liked keeping track. Has anyone else checked their rating recently?

Yeah, I checked a couple of days ago then I checked yesterday and it was all gone. I liked seeing my rating rise and fall even though it didn't mean anything either. Makes me a sad panda :(

PWP isn't the best system ever, but this classic Internet Poster Exaggeration syndrome here. The importance of PWP was greatly reduced by the November changes.

PWP is not a rating system. It is an awards system with arguable effectiveness. I'd still like to see a rating system actually designed for magic implemented.
Ya PWP doesn't provide any ranking except reward Grand Prix byes to those who play infinite events every week.
Prior to the roll over I was top 10 in Eternal in California. Now I'm ranked #7000-ish in global PWP. that translates to ... One bye.
Bullshit.

You might have been ranked top 10 in Eternal, but GP byes were changed to reflect total rating rather than format specific ratings several years ago.

Even Total rankings were wiped however. Basically any history of playing consistently well was erased in favor of "play often? gets points".
Digging deeper into the WotC machine I found how byes are awarded for Grand Prix: Indianapolis (and any GP prior to April 2nd):

I'm well aware; I was just pointing that your Eternal rating prior to the change didn't really mean anything (mean anything tangible that is, obviously it had value in terms of pride), as Total was the only rating that was used to determine byes/qualifications.

Keep in mind that a high eternal rating meant to it was very probable that you had a high total rating too, since your sanctioned legacy games fed both.
For example, with my old total rating, which was built almost exclusively on eternal matches, I would have been qualified for nationals on rating and close to having 2 rating byes for GPs. I guess for Rukcus it was somehow similar, though I don't know about rating thresholds for US nats.

So, is there no way to check the old ratings? :( I haven't played in over 2 years now and barely since Grand Prix Columbus (Read: Grand Prix Flash...stupid f'ing DCI lol). I liked being able to check my rating though, was my only motivation to go play in pre-release tournaments. :-P

I will miss the old ratings system, I loved seeing how high I could get, at the risk of possibly sounding "full of myself" I have gotten my type 2 rating to 1893 while pushing dragonstorm during ravnica - time spiral block's, and since I came back to magic in the summer of 2011 after a multi year hiatus, I started pushing type 1.5 and I was just about to break 1800 for eternal when thedci.com stopped linking to it and instead linked to planeswalker points, so w/e !
Elo is gone forever, confirmed by WotC on twitter. PWP is it now.

They didn't want to allow themselves any room to wimp out and go back to rewarding competence, apparently.

Well, and maintaining the Elo database does almost certainly cost them tens of thousands of dollars a year when you figure the database, salary of the admin, etc. Probably chump change in WotC/Hasbro terms but still.

This begs the question of why they would scrap it and move to a system that is even more complexly designed with less functionality. I of course refer to the client-side of the PWP system, with its gadgets and doo-dads, and fancy graphics that link to Facebook and Twitter. Not to mention the obsessive need to login via graphical prompts (not text...) in order ot just view the top 50 pro players.
On the same token, why maintain MTGO v3 when they can throw money at contract programmers to design v4.
Basically boils down to one thing: as long as its wrapped in a pretty skin, who's going to complain that its a lump of feces?

The old system, which I greatly preferred over the new, flashy PWP bullshit, did not really seem maintained, let alone actively being worked on. I'm fairly certain the staff's policy there was to "never change a running system". Not having been upgraded (in terms of hardware or infrastructure in general) would also help explain the old system's inherent slowness when querying information. I don't thing there were significant expenses to be made to keep this up and running.

Fuck you guys, PWP rulez!!@! I have a 6-digit DCI# and a whopping 1254 Lifetime points (lvl 31 Invoker yo, don't hate). That has to be some kind of record for lifetime lack of achievement.

I have <300 PWP and I've gotten those in the past year playing legacy. I wish the weeklies I go to would gain me points like FNM does for some people, only for bye reasons though.

Not really. I was top10 total of Belgium. Played 6 rounds of swiss, went 4 0 2. Won QF, lost SF. I lost 3 rating with a score of 5-1-2. Playing Legacy was terrible for rating.
I was against PWP's when they announced it. I played GP Amsterdam and actually quit. The changes made afterwards made it better but I'm still confused how a company can implement the original system and not think it through. I read it and within 15 minutes could name all the flaws they adjusted afterwards. No PT invites for a GP, PT invites based on PWP's and so on. Their idea was that making people play more would give them a higher revenue.
I would still prefer elo rating over PWP as I'll never be doing the grinding. But the current system is a lot better than their first implementation and maybe they'll improve it some more in the future.
