What legacy-deck is your favourite of all time? Personally i enjoyed fledgling-dragon ***** alot and RGBSA.

Doomsday Fetchland Tendrils. Powerful, interesting, and rewarding. Also the opponent having no clue on what you're doing is fun.

Good mention to aluren which was the best legacy deck at the beginning of legacy, and to Life.dec because I ran it for years with great succes and this is probably the one I know the most with DDFT.

Pact Spanish Inquisition. Its nice when your opponent actually enjoys getting killed by storm combo because its like watching me run down a burning tight rope with my hands tied behind my back. IT into Slithermuse into D4 into PiF into IT into Tendrils? Yeah I'll stop what I'm doing and watch that happen. I usually get a small crowd to watch me go off too.

GWB Survival with Cabal Therapies, Finks, Genesis, Frog, Witness, Shriekmaw, Natural Order etc seemed pretty awesome, but when it was good and legal in teh format, i was a n00b so I never played it.

NO RUG with Mental Misstep. Man, I miss Mental Misstep. It was powerful but not oppressive, the matches were interactive and I got to play my sweet Natural Orders. Really awesome deck. Also, there was an actual Legacy metagame back then, which I really liked. They should unban Misstep (=

The E.P.I.C. Storm.

The main reason I started playing Legacy.

Empty the Warrens? Grapeshot? Tendrils of Agony?

Boy, my right hand hurts.

Mental Misstep era Team America. Efficient counterspells, discard, land destruction, board control, big creatures...What else do you want from Magic?

Dark Ritual

I have to say Next Level Storm despite never playing it (I was a storm n00b in mystical tutor days, with next to no experience in playing storm combo.) The deck just looks exceedingly fun to play.

My favorite deck at the moment though is the Spanish Inquisition and its variants. Whenever I cast a cruel bargain I smile. Also love playing with the most random cards like odious trow and culling the weak.

Gro-a-Tog from the inception of legacy. Stifles, wastelands, growing dryads, and deeds oh my. I love swing with Dr. Teeth back then, would love to do it now.

Also killing a Belcher deck with a 20 power tog after they drop 10 ETW tokens on turn 1, freaking priceless expression.

When the format first turned over I had a UR control deck I was fond of... (Force, CS, 2x Blood Moons MD, Stifle, Ophidian, Morphling, Shackles, NevDisk, Burn, FoF, Capsize, ect.) It crushed Landstill and was solid against ATS but as soon as people started playing Goblins the honeymoon was over.

So far I've loved pretty much all the legacy decks that I've played. It's not a long list, but it includes Merfolk, Zoo, Maverick and soon(ish) TES. I wish I had the money to buy back my Zoo deck without selling TES. I have just way too many fond memories of that deck, it was also the first deck that I ever played in legacy.

The first tournament I ever played had 50ish players and I had playtested legacy only for three games. Twice against my friend playing Tempo ***** and once showing me Dredge. After losing three games in row, I'm left very disappointed in my deck. I had really high hopes for a deck that plays Wild Nacatl, the legendary Tarmogoyf and just overall CRAZY cards.

Next morning I'm just about to not go and play because the dredge matchup left me so annoyed, I had no idea what happened in the match and my friend told me that there's going to be lots of Dredge in tournament. I decided to go anyways.

Round one... we get pairings, I get to play against my friend who I playtested against the day before. I honestly felt so sick that I was about to throw up or give up on my game, but I just decided to take a leap of faith and see what will happen.

I would never, ever have expected to leave the table as winner, 2-0. My friend is left shaking his head and frowning, complaining about bad draws. This was just the beginning of a epic tournament, and a journey into a new game which I had never explored. In the later rounds I got to play against Zoo (lost 1-2, I knew the player and he's one of the kindest people I know. Later on I traded my JTMS's for duals etc to get my own Zoo-kit. :)), reanimator (winning 2-0...), dredge 2-1, merfolk 2-0.

The tournament was a big local tournament in a little town. People would drive hundreds of kilometers in stuffed cars to get and play. There were so many people that I didn't know, I felt like such an outsider but everyone was kind even though I thought that the tournament would turn out to be cruel place.

Two more rounds were left in the tournament before top 8 is going to start. The two local head judges come to ask me how the deck has been (loaned the deck from main judge) and after telling him how I've done he was really cheerful and told me that I was the best local player at the moment - and pretty much the only player who had the chance to get into top8. If I got to top 8 he promised me a promo t-shirt just to put our town in there. If I won the tournament, I would get a set of tarmogoyfs which would have been a great start to my own legacy deck...

The next opponent plays.. Merfolk. I won 2-0 and I'm really excited, I'm not in the top8 100% sure, but the next match will decide! And I get paired against Belcher. Owch.

Needless to say, mindbreak traps were not found and I'm left outside as the 10th player.

Still, the tournament showed me how much fun magic could be and I've never had this fun playing mtg. I will say that Zoo is my favorite deck and will always remain as the deck closest to my heart.

Maverick comes as close second for just being so awesome. All matchups feel like you're winning or the game is winnable by either player, but Maverick always comes out on top.

Hulk-Flash was fun to play against other people not playing Hulk-Flash, but that's a bit like saying I enjoy beating up preschoolers.

Favorite deck I've built; Train Wreck.

Favorite decks other people have built; RG Survival Advantage, Solidarity, TurboFog.

ATS was also a fun deck. Survival enabled a lot of crazy shit. Welder Survival for that matter.

I play mostly blue-based Aggro-Control decks, and I've played quite a lot of them over the years, among the lot are Merfolk (Mono-U, UW, UB, UWb), Team America, New Horizon, UW Tempo (technically a contorl deck in most match-ups but meh), MeatHooks, and of course Tempo Threshold.

Canadian Threshold is my favourite deck, and it has been for quite some time. I like it a lot because of Nimble Mongoose, partly for nostalgic reasons I used to play UGw Threshold in Vintage back in the day, with Mongoose, Werebear, Enforcer and Meddling Mage and I still have one of the Mongeese I used back then, a misprinted one that my younger brother gave me. I also like Mongoose because it is such a humble little card, a 1/1 for G that suddenly turns into a 3/3 and outright wins games on his own. Nevermind that it was Delver that reinvigorated the deck, Mongoose is #1 in my book.

Team America is my second favourite, it's the deck that has granted me most of my tournament success, and Hymn is just unfair.

Which part don't you understand?
1 - Mox D (pitch land) + Ancient Tomb + Trinisphere/Chalice
2 - play land + Tezzeret AoB (-1) -> swing 5/5 Trini/Chalice

Lejay
04-03-2012, 07:55 PM
As long as Trinisphere is untapped, each spell that would cost less than three mana to cast costs three mana to cast.
If I play turn one trinisphere, I wouldn't like loosing on swords to plowshares or turn 1 ad nauseam.

Reanimator with Mystical Tutor or UG Merfolk with Goyfs and Standstills before people realized the deck was good. Also, I still remember the first time I cast Natural Order into Progenitus when the guy looked completely puzzled about what just took place. Good Times.

Reanimator.

Until now, i still have my old reanimator deck w/c looks like this.

4 Rocky Tarpit
4 Sulfurous Spring
4 Mountain
7 Swamp

1 Strands of Night
2 Necromancy
4 Animate Dead
4 Exhume
4 Buried Alive

4 Lightning Bolt
4 Incinerate
4 Dark Ritual
4 Hidden Horror
1 Crimson Hellkite
1 Crash of Rhino
1 Spirit of the Night
2 Thorn Elemental

That's my reanimator deck when i was a kid. I changed it many times, like putting Serra Avatar-Shallow Grave Combo.

In 2001-2002, Polluted Delta, Putrid Imp, Entomb and Careful Study was printed, i modified Reanimator deck to UB Reanimator.

After long hibernation, i build a deck based on 2010 GP Madrid Champion, Andreas Muller's.

4 Polluted Delta
2 Swamp
4 Underground Sea
2 Verdant Catacombs

1 Blazing Archon
1 Empyrial Archangel
2 Inkwell Leviathan
2 Iona, Shield of Emeria
1 Sphinx of the Steel Wind

4c Landstill. Pernicious Deed was such a beast back then.

But if you go back to T1.5, before Legacy was split off the T1 restricted list, it was a WBR aggro deck I called Mostros.

4 Savannah Lions
4 Mogg Fanatic
4 Goblin Legionnaire
3 Icatian Javelineer
3 Phyrexian Negator

4 Lightning Bolt
4 Incinerate
3 Fire/Ice
2 Cursed Scroll

3 Swords to Plowshares
3 Vindicate
2 Diabolic Edict
1 Terminate

3 Tithe

3 Wasteland
2 Bloodstained Mire
1 Flooded Strand
1 Polluted Delta
3 Plateau
2 Badlands
2 Scrublands
1 Tundra
2 City of Brass

It did surprisingly well (given how bad it looks) against all 3 of the major decks at the time: Food Chain Goblins, U/W Landstill and Dragon. I think that given enough time it would've gained some popularity, but I don't think I'd gotten around to posting it online anywhere. I even ported it over to T1 a few times, shoe-horning in an Ancestral, a Walk, a Demonic and some Moxen. You think that mana base is scary bad as is, try playing it with single color, unfetchable mana sources.

-Enchantress, since it's early days with Verduran, Auratog, Birds, Rancor, Ancestral Mask and Spiritual Asylum up to modern versions.

-UWB Fish with Finkel, Meddling Mage and then evolving with CB, Jotun Grunt etc.

-Early versions of Deadguy Ale with Descendant of Kiyomaro, Specter, Shade.

-Truffle Shuffle with Gigapede and Grave-Shell Scarab.

-Belcher.

But the one I like the most is Enchantress.

Back in the day I used to love Angel Stompy w/ Parallax Wave and sb Cataclysm: people were frightened of Exalted Angel and didn't want to overcommit 'cause then they'd lose to 'clysm - so many powerful cards in one deck...

Now I enjoy playing Dredge, the look on my opponent's face is even better - they watch me discarding my cards and committing suicide so they're confident they're going to win, then BLAAAM!!! a swarm of Zombies suddenly appears, and they throw their deck in the air.

My Zur deck is probably the most fun I've ever had playing magic. Deceptively good yet still mostly under the radar means it had winning power just from people not knowing how to sideboard or what things it could do.

Added bonus being it's sideboard increased win rates more than any other sideboards I've played with as there's pretty much an enchantment that completely neuters any deck.

I didn't use them. I can't remember the math right now because it's been so long, but there were a bunch of critical mass combinations that if I untapped with Survival with something like 5 creature cards in hand and 4 mana or 2 creature cards and 6 mana I would win that turn. I finished with Mirror Entity/Symbiote/Priest combo.

My favorite match was one where I straight up turn 3'd Belcher both games after he went for Empty, and a one mana short keep.

Mine would be X-land Stompy Elves. This pre-Alara before Zoo started running rampant and CounterTop was a turn slower. I mean a turn one Talara's Battalion was epic.

I never owned this deck but I loved borrowing my buddy's mono-blue CounterTop Brain Freeze deck. It essentially ran the Sensei-Sensei combo.

Dredge is my current favorite deck.

For the nostalgic value, I also loved NinjaFae. It was a deck that required very tight play and rewarded it.

I have played Doomsday ANT for something like 1,5 year straight before MT's ban, and it's the deck that introduced me to the competitive scene.

Boy, how busted it was..Many, many memories of the days when your opponent tapping his 2 blue mana in his mainphase chilled your spine, and it happened like half the matches (hope you get the reference). I recall epic games in which I managed to sneak through an entire wall of countermagic in hand and on the board, a satisfaction I rarely get nowadays in this metagame. Running MTutors, 7 chants, Krosan Grip, and being able to crack LED to get Ad Nauseam mana in the drawstep was a real pleasure (..for me ^^).

---------------------------
Special mention:

Although having never played it, I recently peeked the OP in the Next Level Threshold's thread. I think the circa-2010 list, the one full of 3-ofs and with the single Crucible and double Sower of Temptation, is among the better designed/complete decklists ever (many props to Eric English, even if a similar archetype, called "Faeries Ugr", used to be run here).
Would have been nice to give it a spin at proper time, for sure.

I guess it was a real pleasure for your opponent too, since cracking LEDs in the drawstep would discard AdNauseam too (unless you cracked them in response on a Brainstorm).

He could crack them in response to Mystical Tutor.

I played Dredge as my default deck from the release of Shadowmoor clean through to New Phyrexia, and before that in extended. Nowadays, I don't play it so much, but I still have the reputation as "the Dredge player" in my area. UW Landstill is the deck I've been playing for the last 10 months or so, and I really like it. So much so that it's currently pimped quite a lot.

Mana didn't empty at the end of each sub-phase, so one could Mystical in upkeep, crack LEDs and/or cast Rituals, then Ad Nauseam in draw step. Bummer.

Hi, welcome to MTG.

I used to enjoy Landstill with Mana Drain, then they ruined this format.

Mono Blue Control during the Mental Misstep era with cryptic command was the nuts. After a lot of testing, the deck became comprised of only Vedalken Shackles and Jace as win conditions. It was very powerful, and back to basics in the sideboard positioned it well against all the greedy mana bases. Unfortunately, I was never able to pilot it at a large event during the months MM was legal. I was very sad when it was banned. I believe that there was a lot of unknown power in that deck for its time.

Team America was my favorite deck. Love it's playing style....wreck opponent's mana base and rip apart their hand. Drop a 5/5 flyer for dirt cheap casting cost with free counter magic in my hand is like giving my opponent the middle finger.

Unfortunately, I've been having little success with TA lately. :frown:

The funny thing is I hate the green color pie but those decks were still my favorite decks to play. If you don't know the acronyms then you didn't know how fun/fair those decks were before they ruined an archetype.

Truth. TEES is the stone cold nuts. First deck I would put back together once Survival returns.

Golden Grahams, or any other variants of Gamekeeper or Auriok Salvager Combo were pretty cool back in the day, it was like playing The Rock with a combo finish.

It saddens me that TEES is the only one I DON'T know =/

That being said, Bant Survival was probably my favorite deck of all time, though to be honest I've got a soft spot for playing GWx anything - Survival just made the deal even better. Fuggin DCI -.-"

Probably in this order: Ad Nauseam Doomsday Hybrid (with Mystical) that I wrote primer for, BHWW 4C Landstill, Dragon (when Bazaar was still Legal in 1.5), Hulk Flash with Abeyance main to tutor for that I day 2'd GP Flash with, RecSur.

Oh definitely Angel Stompy. I've had an unnatural intrigue with White Weenie strategies ever since my rookie days, and I got blown out by someone who was testing some kind of Extended/Type 1 deck featuring Crusades, Divine Sacraments, Battle Screeches heh. I'd never seen the Crusade effect before, so it just amazed the shit out of me that those Battle Screech tokens could blow up into 3/3s and just dominate a sucker like me in the air.

That strategy never did pan out in a real competitive way (at least not for me), but when Legacy split from Vintage and early decklists were brewing, I latched onto Zilla's Angel Stompy build and immediately loved it. Probably to this day my favorite opening play, regardless of its relative power level to the metagame, is turn 1 Mother of Runes, turn 2 face down creature. Either that, or the turn 1 Glowrider I threw down against Iggy Pop a few years back, when I actually had the chance to participate in some sanctioned Legacy games. Guy across from me just laughed it off until he got to his turn 1, threw down a land and a Lotus Petal and I said, "that costs 1."

I've moved onto Deadguy cuz, yeah and stuff, but I love Angel Stompy like Liam Lynch loves seahorses.

1. GW Survival
Just think about it. It was Maverick pimped with 4 Survivals. How not awesome could it possibly not have been? And since people only acknowledged blue decks and didnt play it you got to play a 70% vs the Meta deck for a couple of months (until Caleb put blue in it and poof ban). I really enjoyed playing it because it was rogue and very good and very fun. Like with Maverick now you just get to do a lot of stuff, interact with the opponent, be on the board, have relevant combat steps, activate abilities and play a nice game of Magic.
But the best thing about GW Survival was probably that the most popular deck back then was Merfolk with only 8 Lords. You had a 90% matchup (I know what that means, it was that extreme) but they wouldn't know so they would lose and then they would rage how they lose to such a pile.

2. GBw Survival
A few people have already mentioned but this was really a fun time. For quite a while it was one of the best decks, maybe even the best deck, in the Meta but more importantly it was just a blast to play. If you like fair value control it won't get any better. Deed, Witness, Wall of Blossoms, Cabal Therapy, Survival of the Fittest, Krovikan Horror. Just awesome cards.

3. Rabit Wombat
If you don't know the deck, it is IBA's Mono White cycle control abomination, starring Bandage, Wing Shards and Renewed Faith. It also played Humility, Eternal Dragon and Decree of Justice but it truly was mostly about somehow getting them with Bandage. Attack me with Goblin Lackey? Bandage!
When the Meta was yet undeveloped this was a beating. The Meta was perfect for it. First of all there were no real Combo decks. Belcher killed itself half the time so that wasn't an issue. You lost 100% vs. Solidarity but no one could play or wanted to play it so whatever. Then there was Goblins which you just annihilated. Landstill was also a deck back then but they didn't have Planeswalkers yet so and didn't play any alternative kill to their Factories so you literally just sat there, cycled Dragons and other stuff, and waited until you could cycle Decree for 9 and then won 1-0. Early Thresh was a cakewalk because you played more Removal than they played creatures. Vs. old Survival (ATS, RGSA) it was close, all about if they could kill you before you drop Humility.

There's stuff like Solidarity, Dragon Stompy, or classic Canadian Threshold that's aesthetically much more pleasant and representative of what Legacy is all about, but my personal favourite remains Marius Hausmann's Landstill list circa 2008:

4 Flooded Strand
4 Tundra
1 Underground Sea
4 Mishra's Factory
1 Wasteland
3 Island
3 Plains
2 Polluted Delta
1 Scrubland
1 Academy Ruins
1 Tolaria West

Besides goblin, I really like combo decks at present ( I used to be a fan of aggro decks), such as Imperial Painter, ANT(with grim tutor), Dredge and Elves.

Really? Iggy Pop doesn't seem to be on the same scale of brokeness as FF/TV and Hulk Flash.

Anyways...as much as I loathe Legacy...I did enjoy playing Aggro-Loam and making my friend announce, with a resigned tone, "I chump block with my Phyrexian Dreadnought" whenever I would swing in with Countryside Crusher (who was 3/3 the turn before, and would frequently be 13/13+ the next turn).

Iggy Pop, the list after we got Infernal Tutor, which was something like

4 Brainstorm
4 Mystical Tutor
4 Infernal Tutor
4 Intuition
4 Ill-Gotten Gains
4 Leyline of the Void
4 Lotus Petal
4 Dark Ritual
4 Cabal Ritual
4 Lion's Eye Diamond
4 Tendrils of Agony
1 Chain of Vapor
4 Polluted Delta
4 Flooded Strand
3 Underground Sea
2 Island
2 Swamp

SB: Xantid Swarm, one-of solutions to misc things, some bounce spells, Dark Confidant

This deck was a house for several months, even without maindeck protection.

Strangely, before the deck had Infernal Tutor (people played either Impulse or Strategic Planning), there was even less hate for it so you could routinely steamroll opponents who either had a bunch of goblins or gave you literally all day to setup (Landstill) natural Tendrils or double Tendrils.

My favorite deck is probably my red stax deck with Aether Flash when Goblins was huge. NLS and Rev614 are close for me.

Always enjoyed playing sneak attack, back when it came out I used to play a R/W deck with Serra Avatars. After about a decade of not playing when I picked up my cards again and found they had printed things like the eldrazi and progenitus I was very happy, so obviously Sneak and Show is my favorite.

1) BUG landstill : toying with tools like jace, deeds, loam and fow in a same pure control deck is a feeling I really enjoyed that much

2) Train Wreck :for a control deck enthusiast, using staff of domination along with coffers & discard is a pretty interesting challenge

3) Team America (all versions) : i never get more fun with a tempo deck than with this one. Simple and awesomely efficient.

3) Aggro loam : a very different and original deck, with very interesting mechanic and a unique card selection.
