I finished 6-2-1 on the day, with the draw unintended. One of my losses I got smashed and don't think I could have done anything about it. The other loss was gift wrapped to me when he took a game loss for failing to de-sideboard, but he then took 2 in a row for the win. I'm not completely sure of the misplays that I made there, but I'm 100% confident that both games were winnable for me.
*Obligatory "I'm probably gonna mess up details, if an opponent reads this and has a correction, please let me know and I'll fix it".
Round 1: Jerry with 3 color Reanimator (Had red for Faithless Looting)
Game 1 is pretty slow. I'm a little confused with his land base of Badlands and Sea, but I just start ramping up dudes. Then he starts looting, careful studying, and brainstorming for a few turns. I drop a V Clique on his draw phase and see 2 lands, FoW, Brainstorm, and Entomb. He already has a Griselbrand, Angel of Despair, and Inkwell in the yard, and I have a clock, so the Brainstorm seems like the obvious choice. However, the guy next to me is also playing Reanimator, and right after I finish writing down the cards the guy announces he's casting Entomb, and I just for some reason repeat him and say Entomb. I don't even realize my mistake until he plays the Brainstorm and ask "Did I really say Entomb?" He nodded, and I laughed it off. Nothing to do at that point but continue to beat. Luckily for me he never finds a reanimation spell and I beat him. I'm pretty sure I have an Ooze in play as well, though not a lot of green mana. I think if he found an Exhume quick it would have been a game, but any other reanimation wouldn't have worked. I feel kinda bad because I think he had like 35 cards in his graveyard by the end without finding one, but gotta take what you can.
Game 2 I bring in Bog and Spell Pierce, taking out Teeg and Jitte. He gets an Inkwell into the yard pretty quick and brings it back with Animate Dead. I'm on a fairly short clock but I drop a KotR into play on my turn and pass. He beats my face in twice I think, before I find the GSZ and nab my Qasali to break his Animate Dead. I hold back this turn and he goes for Reanimate. I use Knight to grab Bog, and he's dead the next turn.
1-0
Round 2: Tinac with RUG Delver http://scg.im/d45988
I'll have to say that I don't remember many details about this one, which is sad because it was extremely tight. Game 1 I remember him having a Sylvan in play and casting Temporal Mastery on me twice. They both end up being just cantrips though essentially, and I manage to take it down with a giant Knight.
I boarded in Submerges, probably boarded out Jaces, Teeg, and Qasali. Game 2 had him crushing me with something I didn't expect: Cursed Totem. Luckily I had gone with a normally sweet hand of 2 lands, 2 Nobles, Ooze, Mother of Runes, GSZ. Yeah, dream hand eh? Well I played my 1 drops and never saw another land, and he quickly crushed me with some insects or something.
Game 3 we only had like 7 minutes left at the start. We play the trading game for a bit, he hits me a few times with a Delver but I manage to get a Jitte in play and I think 2 Noble Hierarchs. I also have an Ooze keeping his yard empty, and I eventually also drop a Knight. I'm bashing in, he's chumping my Knight with Goyfs, Mongooses, etc for awhile. Time is called and I can't quite finish him off. I end the game with a 9/9 Knight equipped with a Jitte, 2 Nobles, and another Knight in hand. He had empty board and FoW in hand. I asked for concession and he said no. I was kind of upset about it initially, but it's completely within his rights to say no, so I just shrugged it off and got ready for the next round.
1-0-1
Round 3: Adam with RUG.... weird? It was using Guided Passage and a bunch of other things that you don't normally find in RUG. I think it was a very similar list to this one http://scg.im/d45980 if not the exact same, but I'm not sure. They did a deck tech with him here http://starcitygames.com/events/coverage/deck_tech_rug_with_adam_tanner.html
Game 1 he's casting Punishing Fire on all my little guys, but I think I eventually drop a Knight into play. He plays Guided Passage, and I have to read the card like 3 times to understand what to do. I eventually start going through his deck, trying to figure out the best way to go about it. I nab Lavamancer for the creature, since my little guys were already shut out anyways from the Punishing Fire. I notice that he's a little short on lands, and only 1 makes blue. I make the choice to give him a Jace and another Grove. The Grove would do nothing but gain me life, since he already had one in play. And I would waste down his 1 blue source with my Knight to hopefully stay away from Jace until I killed him. This plan worked. He cast another Guided Passage, and I gave him the exact same 3 cards. I think I cast StP on a couple Goyfs of his this game.
I think I boarded in Chills, Submerges and NO package can't remember what I took out. Game 2 he gets pretty mana flooded. I dropped Chill twice, I think he blew the first one up. It did a great job of slowing his Fires engine down to a crawl. I see my life changing like 15 times this game, just up 1 down 2, repeat. I go for the NO, but he has FoW. It was probably a poor choice to try for it then, since I was ahead, but I was just going for the early haymaker. Eventually I land something too big for him to handle. I think he actually has a Jace down this game, but it's too late for him to deal with my giant Knights. Don't remember a lot of details about this one, I think he just didn't get any offense going until too late.
2-0-1
Round 4: Paul with Dark Depths Rock
Game 1 is really long and pretty interesting. He has a DD in play along with a Hexmage. I'm a bit hurting on mana, but I have 2 big Knights in play, to his Knight, Goyf, and Maze of Ith. This is one of the occasions where I really wish I had more than 2 Wastes in the deck. I made a big mistake and activated too many Knights, which gave him the opening to Waste my Waste, then activate his Hexmage to crush me the next turn. He had 2 Mother of Runes in play to save it from anything I could do.
I bring in Submerges and the NO package for game 2. He is not expecting it at all, and I think that a turn 4 Prog crushes him.
Game 3 we're pushing the clock again, but this time he's more prepared for the Prog. I wish I remembered the end of this game better, but I'm probably going to mess it up. I get Prog into play, but he casts Living Wish for a Metamorph to kill it. I have another NO in hand, but no green dudes in play. I topdeck a green fetch, break it for Dryad Arbor, and cast the other NO. He couldn't find a Volrath's stronghold fast enough to survive.
3-0-1
Round 5: Ross in pretty much a mirror. He has NO main and FoW, I have Mother of Runes. A few other differences here and there, but pretty similar. http://scg.im/d45989
Ross was a fun dude to play against, but I may be skewed due to liking his deck choice. He was undefeated at this point, so I was feeling good about my breakers also. Game 1 we both start with nothing too impressive. He has a Noble in play, I think I'm on just a few lands at this point. I draw step Clique him on his turn, he FoW's me. I have 2 Spell Pierces in hand, but didn't have any mana open and didn't feel that there was anything coming to scare me. Then he cast Natural Order. Then I scooped.
I bring in my NO package and some submerges. I take out Jace, Teeg, Qasali, some other stuff. This game I think that Natural Order was cast something like 4 times this game, maybe 5 with one being countered. I know that one of us cast it to kill the other guys Prog, but I had another the very next turn. This one goes all the way.
Game 3 was nuts. I think I had a NO in hand for most of the game, but no real need to use it. My board was really solid, with 2 Scavenging Ooze, a Knight, and 1 or 2 Mother of Runes. I ate his graveyard, and start poking damage in. On turn 5 of turns I get in for exactsies with an Ooze.
4-0-1
Round 6: Greg with Combo Elves http://scg.im/d45959
I was pretty excited to be up to table 4 at such a big event more than halfway through the tournament. Kinda silly I know, but whatever. It felt nice. Nice, until he hard cast Emrakul on turn 3 as I have maybe a Mother of Runes in play....
I bring in Submerges, Flusterstorms, and the NO package to hope and race him. It doesn't happen. I keep a bad hand with a fetch, Mother of Runes, StP, 2 Submerges, Spell Pierce and Brainstorm. I fetch a Tundra and cast Mom. I spend the first 2-3 turns keeping his board empty with the swords and Submerges, but it doesn't matter since I never draw another land. Pierce just doesn't get the job done in this matchup.
4-1-1. Sucked to get crushed so handily, this one was done in like 15 minutes. Though it was nice that I could finally go grab some lunch after going to time in every round except 1.
Round 7: Blake with Esper control
Game 1 I win because he didn't de-sideboard. I feel sorta bad about it, since there was a disagreement regarding whether he had actually presented his deck yet or not. I know I had finished shuffling and set my deck on his playmat. I think that he set his down in front of me, but I don't remember if I had ever touched it yet before the judge came over and grabbed our stuff. They came back and quizzed us each about it, I just said that I don't remember if he officially presented or not. The judge felt that he did, Blake lost his appeal, and I got the game.
Game 2 he seems to be pretty upset about it, but we go on. I never reduce his life below 19, he makes me discard some stuff, and Jace sculpts my mind.
Game 3 I bring in the NO package, I don't think anything else. I start to develop pretty well, I think I have something like 2 Nobles, a Mother, and a Knight on board, when he miracles Terminus. Since it was only 1 mana the Pierce in my hand was no good. I start to mount a comeback with a Knights, Clique, and a Mother of Runes as Jace is ramping up. But he nails a Lingering Souls to keep himself alive just long enough for the Ult to fire off. If I had been able to start hitting Jace 1 turn earlier I think I had this game. I felt like this round was gift-wrapped to me, but I blew it. I'm not sure exactly what I could have done better, but I know for sure that there was plenty. Out of top 8 running now, but still a shot at some money.
4-2-1
Round 8: Tom with U/W Stoneforge
Game 1 he demolishes me. He uses StP on the first couple dudes I play, Snapcasters it back, then grabs a Jitte with his Stoneforge. He had a naturally drawn Sword of Feast and Famine though that hopped onto Snapcaster and ended me fast. This game was like 7 minutes long.
I bring in Qasali and NO package. He didn't put me on NO, and is quite surprised when I get it into play pretty early. I think I bait some counters with GSZ and Ooze. I know he has a Batterskull from a Stoneforge, but it doesn't matter. He digs like crazy for I assumed a Wrath of God, but I felt ok with the Snapcaster in my hand and Pierce in the yard. He never finds it though so it doesn't matter.
I bring in the 4th Spell Pierce for Wrath, since he hinted at digging for it game 2. He's hurting on lands, with just a Tundra and Glacial Fortress. I land an early Knight, he makes a Stoneforge grabbing Batterskull, but I kill it with a GSZ'ed Qasali. I decide to use the Knight to waste his Tundra, and it hurts him bad. He draw another Glacial Fortress, which comes into play tapped. He's doing nothing for awhile and I hit him with the Knight a few times. He puts Jitte onto his Stoneforge and starts attacking, but I have a Mother of Runes to prevent any uses of it. Eventually Knight takes it down
5-2-1, feeling glad to get off the losing streak.
Round 9: Cory with 4-Color Aggro Loam
Aggro Loam has been my favorite Legacy deck for awhile, it's pretty much all I've played for at least the past year or so. I've recently gotten off of it, but still keep up on the deck techs and etc. So after turn 2 or 3, I know what he's doing and feel pretty confident in knowing how to play against it. Regardless, game 1 I think he should have wrecked me. I make a few dumb choices with my fetches, and am unable to get the basics that I really need. He almost completely waste-locks me out, but I manage to stabilize with a gigantic Knight in play and 1 of each basic. He's been casting Punishing Fires on me all game, and it actually has become a bit of a race. He makes a bit of a misplay late to tilt the race in my favor when I dropped a Wasteland into play to see if I could get him to make a poor decision. He only had 1 Grove of the Burnwillows in play, so at my end step he was planning to cast both of his P Fires and then return them. But he put them both on the table, and I responded by Wasting his Grove. I believe that he was shortcutting them by showing both, and could have argued into being able to get one of them back, but he didn't even try. This bought me an extra turn of him having to choose to either gain life with his Nomad Stadium or bring back the Grove. I think I end up casting an end-step Snapcaster with no targets to swing for Lethal the next turn when he doesn't get back his P. Fires.
I bring in Bog and Submerges, but it doesn't matter. He keeps a really loose hand and gets punished badly for it. He just has Grove and Tranquil Thicket for lands, which he cycles on his first turn. I had gone turn 1 Noble, turn 2 Knight, and turn 3 grabbed a Wasteland to empty him. After like 2 turns of draw/discard/go, he scooped em up. We chatted for quite a bit about the deck afterwards, nice guy.
