View Full Version : BOM 2012 Coverage
Hey guys,
I couldn't make it to BOM due to work and trying to get some coverage, videos etc. I found this:
Watchdamatch (http://www.watchdamatch.com/Articles/Magic/Coverage-et-News/MTG-BOM-2012-MAIN-EVENT-LEGACY.html)
But don't see any videos there. Anyone know if there's video coverage or not?
Your not the only one wishing there was better coverage. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find any coverage other than the writeups of a few matches on the BOM website.
Hi,
watchdamach will up load the videos monday, they're unable to do it live because of a " piss poor connection" ( their terms).
Meanwhile, there is written coverage by world champion guillaume matignon to be found here (http://www.bazaar-of-moxen.com/coveragebom6/coverage.html) or on watchdamach.
None is perfect (or enough), official one gives standing only for 2 or 3 rounds , and watch... don't have videos
for those interested top 8 is supposed to be 2 canadian thresh, tempo zoo, sneak and show, doomsday, maverick, stoneblade, esperblade.

That's a really diverse and balanced top 8. Nice to see SFM-Jace decks still showing up.
It's Europe man, I'm surprised stuff like Elves and Dredge is not up there

The top-8 perfectly shows the four pillars of the European metagame imo. The combo pillar mainly consists of Show and Tell and Storm variants anyways. The 5th pillar, nonexistant in this top-8, would be metagamed midrange/control decks such as Nic Fit and Loam.
2x RUG Tempo
2x UW(x) Blade
2x Combo (Storm and Show&Tell variants)
2x GW(x) Creature Decks (Maverick & Zoo)
Maëlig

3x RUG Tempo
2x UW(x) Blade
2x Combo (Storm and Show&Tell variants)
1x GW(x) Creature Decks (Maverick)
Fixed. Also, I would argue midrange was represented by the maverick deck.
It's Europe man, I'm surprised people are not copy pasting last SCG winning 75
Fixed for you .
Also the tempo zoo is a rug tempo list (it is tempo, with stifle waste daze force, just not canadian thresh, play no mongeese but kird ape instead and 15 critters ). Just nitpicking on the different archetype among rug tempo (canadian and blue zoo play differently, goose being little and shrouded vs ape being bigger and vulnerable).

Horrible, just utterly horrible coverage....
It's one of the most important Legacy/T1 event of the year, and the coverage is like that of wizards in 90's...
Atleast it's better than previous years, but still - how hard it is to get a net connection going and hire someone that can actually talk decent English to do updates/commentary?
Meh..

Sad but true.
I'm pretty sure that all you'll hear is that it is not their fault and they are doing the best they can.
Simply. Not. True.
Announcing the coverage will be held by the Magic World Champion is not doing anything better, but makes it even more shameful when you look at the quality.

I was disappointed by the coverage as well. Shouldn't be that difficult to look for 2-3 people who know the format and who'd like to write some informative bits and pieces. Shave down the prizes by a very small margin - say some foils or a box for each of the writers in addition to their accomodation and you're ready to go. It's not that they'll loose money by doing so. Oh well...
So if the 'officially' announced Top 8 differs from the one shown, are the decklists shown here at watchdamatch (http://www.watchdamatch.com/Articles/Magic/Coverage-et-News/MTG-BOM-2012-MAIN-EVENT-LEGACY.html) the right ones?
Coverage issue fixed, talex went 9th not 8th.:frown:
The top 8 of watch da mach is the good one.
Don't worry elf is in the top 16 (12 exactly) so the european meta is safe

Don't make me laugh. There is no "good" at all in every "coverage" done so far.
As if it is not embarassing enough to not beeing able to show the Top 8 results, there is propably not a single deck list (if it is shown at all) that is 100% correct.
Missing lands, cards that do not exist, seriously?
Well, who am I trying to convince here anyway, as if they give a fukc about all that, cause if they'd do, then things would have been fixed already.
So is there any Top16 lists?

Someone please copy/paste the Top16 names and decklists please. I've got a lot of friends there that made Top16 and would love to see lists and playoffs.
I just can't get a connection to the coverage server myself. It just worked for a second, so Johannes Gehrer did Top8? Did he win it all in the end?

When you look at the photos, it seems that the other RUG player made it in the end.
His picture is beneath the one of the top 8, so it would make sense.
If you want to make sure, just check out the coverage...oh wait:mad:.

It's missing 3 lands by the looks of it. Probably Volcanics.
They didn't play out the top 4, just splited (1500euros plus 10 bilands each, not bad).
Top 4 isn't public yet.
I didn't found errors in the decklists (exept tarmoguyof and missing cards), but the cards are in english or french so it is difficult for non frenchspeaker.
Yeah coverage was lame.

Coverage as bad as this really makes me want to fly there despite my (currently) broken knee and just sit there and upload the results of each round. Can't be that hard.
Also, there's this prejudice in Europe saying that the French have the worst English on the entire continent. As much as I hate prejudices, the coverage speaks for itself.

The tempo zoo is absolutely not a canadian. The player (Cyril) is Sea r hill on the source, made 20th at GP amsterdam with the deck (also 4th at side event legacy french championship and 4th at the french legacy championship, and other minor results).
3 volc are lacking. The mana base is ok. Not the best one but still ok.

So what if they are from France? This was an international tournament and was advertised as one. They also had fliers in English and mentioned on quite a few places that they are expecting people from all over the world. Not the case in Japan.
I'm pretty sure that if they really wanted more quality they would have contacted some English born speakers to help with coverage and would sort the connection issue in advance. Is it hard to go to a local ISP provider and ask if they can provide a good upload connection for a few days? And in return promise advertising etc?
Not sure why I'm even giving out ideas. Coverage was seriously lacking in this new media world, hopefully some things will change next year.

Obviously the coverage is lacking. Each year it is the same. However, how can you guys dare criticize those men that organise the biggest legacy tournament each year (non organised by wotc) ?
A few of them are making more efforts in comparison than Wotc staff, proposing great side events (nothing like the GPs ones), huge prices. I mean HUGE.
So videos are coming, the room they rented for the WE did not have an internet connection. They also have problably to tidy up, to clean the room.
I think the video will be in French... guess what, it is a French tournament, made by French guys, covered by a French team. So if you want to understand the videos, ask me, I'll translate it. It's totally logical that the videos are in French isn't it ?
Btw, I was just taunting about the French people being better... but if you really wanna make comparison, just look at our pros and what they've won (Matignon and Wafo tapa are back btw, they could have trusted once again the wolrd championship if wizard had not cancelled it).
Had anyone tried to follow the coverage of a japan legacy tournament ? (or any other country's).
Yes, I can follow the coverage of SCG easily, despite being from Austria.
Guys seriously you could also have checked the coverage in spanish, what more to ask?
I understand German and English, but neither French nor Spanish. Now guess what I ask for?
Having a decent English coverage would be good publicity for the event to attract more people from other countries.
No English coverage? Kkthxbye.

I couldn't go there but would have loved to enjoy an understandable coverage. So, why am I not allowed to criticize the lack of coverage?

No surprise here, French put on an amazing tournament, everyone gets excited and asks to get a piece of the pie. French only coverage gives a royal arrogant "we're French, deal with it".

I offer to you guys to translate the videos coming soon... still not enough for you ?
They also could have made crappy, more expensive side events, and paid a real coverage with the money... cause watchdamatch is a volunteer team. But that would have not been agreed by players.

The whole language thing was kind of a trend during the event. Players asked judges in French, the Judge answered in French, and if you were lucky, the Judge asked you AFTERWARDS if you understood French, and then gave an English explanation that was always half as long as the French one. If you got any translation at all, of course.
If they don't want to provide coverage that's fine, but don't advertise that there will be coverage (including streaming video) and then not provide it. They set up expectations, but then didn't deliver. If there had been no mention of coverage anywhere, I don't think anyone would be complaining.

It was planned to be a coverage there. But there has been a problem of connection. They desperatly searched for a solution days before, creating topics on French forums etc.. but have not been able to solve it.
I know it's frustrating. I am myself very angry because of this. But isn't the most important point the fact that the tournament was awesome for players ?

What really angers me is that there actually seems to be a "valid" discussion about the event being in France, so coverage can be French. No! There's should be no difference in either writing a match report in French or English. In fucking English. Why in the world would you write it in French? If you can't speak/write English, GET someone who can.
BoM is the premier Eternal event in the entire year, but the coverage is so lacking, it's not even funny. Someone pay for my trip and I will work 16h/day providing coverage without asking for a salary.

Organize such an event in Germany to show us then...
In Spain there are converage of their big tournaments, and guess what it is in Spanish (there is also a Spanish coverage of the bom...).
Why didn't a German team come to cover it ? They would have paid you the trip I believe.
And no, you cannot blame a team to make coverage in its own language. I want to add that the coverage was half in English and half in French.

I'm not talking about organizing the event. I'm talking about providing coverage. Just sitting there and writing match reports for every round's feature match. Plus have someone copy/paste each round's results and upload them. That takes so little time.
The quality of the English reports was ok. But why in the world hurt yourself by writing every other report in French? Why? I don't get it, it's just bad for everyone involved.
In Spain there are converage of their big tournaments, and guess what it is in Spanish
I've always disliked that as well despite being able to understand some Spanish.
Why didn't a German team come to cover it ? They would have paid you the trip I believe.
There's no German coverage team. At least none that shows real interest in Eternal. Still, why even send a team when BoM announces a great coverage on their own?
And no, you cannot blame a team to make coverage in its own language. I want to add that the coverage was half in English and half in French.
That's my point. I don't think there is a "own language" when it comes to events as big as these. There's no point in writing in your own language when writing in English is just as easy. If someone has real problems with English it's ok, but get someone else to provide coverage then.
But isn't the most important point the fact that the tournament was awesome for players ?
Definitely. I wish I could have been there.
I was slightly annoyed by the missing coverage also, mostly because the front page of BOM kept advertising the videos ("click here for videos and live stream") but I couldn't find any. What I think you could have done was simply update the front page, once you knew that there was a problem with the videos, with that information.
(beside the fact that you have several languages spoken in your country if I am not wrong...).
German is the only official language (Hungarian, Croatian and Slovenian are only recognized regional languages, if that's what you mean), which renders your statement irrelevant.
As stated by others, this was advertised as an international event. If there would be a similar event with a lack of English coverage in Austria, I could completely understand the criticism.
I do understand, that you'd prefer a French one, however I cannot understand the "It's a French tournament, deal with it!", when you basically advertise it all around the world.
Please don't take this all as a bash on France (it is not!), but criticism about the coverage only! It seems like you take this very personally and I would like to clarify that it has nothing to do with you personally or your nationality.
Anyway, I appreciate your offer to translate things, but this doesn't wipe away the lack of pairings, standings and reports during the event.
If they don't want to provide coverage that's fine, but don't advertise that there will be coverage (including streaming video) and then not provide it. They set up expectations, but then didn't deliver. If there had been no mention of coverage anywhere, I don't think anyone would be complaining.

I think people need to chill. Also, the constructive way of suggesting BoM should have english coverage isn't to start the whole "french are arrogant" or "english is the first language in UK/USA, so we don't have to care about other languages" (now who is arrogant?). Rather, I would say: BoM is a great event. It would undoubtedly be an even better, international event if it provided coverage in english. It could help the event to grow because people living in Europe where french is not spoken (like me, I live in Norway) can read about the tournament and better decide whether or not they want to go there. Good coverage generates interest!

Guillaume Matignon has a very strange sense of humour that partly relies on insulting some people. He is famous for being loudmouth. Even according to French criteria ;).
That's why the video was suppressed.
I thought it was the general French way to dig at someone and then call it a joke. My colleagues keep warning me that if people make sarcastic comments and then go "chill man it zeu French joke!" then they certainly meant what they said

Is there any chance that Gehrer's list will be uploaded?
While we're at it:
WTF did I just watched in the feature match of Round 9? That Sneak Show player literally begged for getting stomped into the ground. Fetchin' save while the opponent's tapped out? Nah, I'll spare my Force for that Stifle later on. Gees... .
PS:
Another good one: Having a Delver in play, playing Mystical Tutor for Ancestral Recall and NOT flipping it during the upkeep WHILE having THE CARD placed FACE-UP on top of your DECK. *facepalm*
Seems like SCG is some sort of spreading sickness that has already infested europe... .

Yeah that cost him the game. Players might be tired when in the later rounds but I wish they'd pick experienced players for the feature matches so we can watch mtg at its highest level.

Gentlemen, I have aggregated all coverage I have found into English (no I haven't dubbed the videos).
Bazaar of Moxen 2012 Legacy Decklists, Reports, and Video Roundup

Bazaar of Moxen 2012 Vintage Decklists, Reports, and Video Roundup

BOOM. This was many hours of work the past couple of days, so I hope you all enjoy it. If you find more nuggets I can add to the coverage (more reports/lists on other international forums, for example) please let me know and I will immediately add them to the coverage.
If the organizers of Bazaar of Moxen would pay for my airfare (I will cover hotel and food) I would be happy to do full coverage all weekend courtesy of Eternal Central, including videos, and do it all in English. If they wish to pay for my compatriot Jordi Amat (piZZero) I'm sure we can also do mirror coverage in Spanish as well. We will devise a plan ahead of time to get a better WiFi connection to stream and post real time updates (pairings, standings, feature matches, etc.). Frenchy-Man, can you get the ball rolling with this and start making contact? Jordi and I spoke to BoM organizer very briefly last year, but we were unable to make it this year.

It's Tristan Polzl.
Jean-Mary Accart made top 16 with the same doomsday list (he's my padawan).

Very good, thank you. I have updated that, along with Simon Rouze and Nicolas Crepelle corrected sideboards (other coverage was wrong, but the correct info was culled from their Top 4 deck tech videos).

Thanks for beeing that busy.
I apprecieate that.
Hopefully there's a chance to pick up Gehrer's list in any german/austrian forum to complete the coverage.

Holy crap, a lot of nationalism going on in this thread. Don't know where to start.
Have to agree with the majority of the crowd, not having an English coverage is god damn weak. I'm European myself and I (rather proudly, but not arrogantly) claim that I understand, if not speak, a couple of the major languages spoken on the continent. French is not one of them, as french is in no way as "major" as any Frenchman would want you to believe.
All that shit aside, there is no excuse for not reporting this event in English. Everyone (I hope) is quite aware of the fact that English is the most spread language of the world, so if you truly want to SPREAD INFORMATION of this event, then do it in English. I relish the multi-culti aspects of Europe as much as the rest of you, but shutting your eyes blind to such facts would only lead to elitism, in its most unattractive sense.
And really, not being able to provide a decklist (in any language!) of Johannes Gehrer's top 8 deck by now is quite pathetic, and I don't care what your mother tongue is!

It's even kind of funny since Johannes usually plays the most generic Canadian Threshold list one could ever imagine. Just Copy+Paste anything onto the website and it has pretty good odds of being what he played.
He probably played the same list: http://pmtg-forum.de/wbb2/thread.php?postid=3951357&sid=0f7876f53e9abb2186996477580ce573#post3951357

Hello everyone, I'm Lois Jacquet, TO of the event (using Hemgath account btw).
I understand your complains, and glad to hear some things to improve for next year (even if my mail box lois_neo@msn.com would have been more accurate).
The thing is, this year we did not have any internet connexion, which made streaming and live coverage very complicated to do, this will be the very last year of BoM without a decent internet connexion.
To all people thinking that our tournament is in France, we're french, we fuck you all, it's not exactly the way I see the BoM. We are very pleased to welcome 19 nationalities at BoM this year, and we expect more for next years. This year was the first one where we tried to do coverage, so obviously it's not perfect, and only in French, and we're all aware that we need to improve on this point.
You want to come next year to do english coverage ? my mail box is open, and I'll be very happy if I have one or two guys from the UK or the US to do english coverage, I do like people who does'nt speak french even if some of you seems to say the opposite :)
So, the best way to improve this event is to send your advices / remarks to me, and next year will be better, I promise ;)
Thanks for reading.
Loïs
