View Full Version : Combo deck poll

Love playing those combo/combo type decks? Seeing those combo decks go off? Or anything in between? Whether it's a combo engine just trying to cast one card under the right conditions (Like storm decks) a 2 card combo that just obliterates (Like painter's servant + grindstone) putting stuff into the graveyard (Reanimator, dredge type decks) or just trying to cheat a bomb into play (Like Sneak attack / Show & tell setups) or whatever else in between! If you'd like to explain why, make a post in addition to answering the poll (The poll will remain open for the summer, closing during the second half of september, giving all those that just might be reading this 2 months on down the line a chance to go "O hey I want to vote!")
Pic your favorite combo -or- combo'ish deck you enjoy the most seeing "go off" (Whether you're playing it yourself, watching a match between 2 other players, or even about to die to the combo yourself)
The Candidates are:
Spanish inquisition
Ad Nauseam Tendrils
Hive mind
The Epic Storm
Belcher
Spiral tide
Combo elves
Dredge
Sneak & show
Painter's stone (Either U/R -or- Red)
(It only let me do 10, but I know there are more combo's in the HUGE cardpool that is type 1.5/legacy. If you play something that isn't an option here, forgive me, I tried to put up what are the "true'er" combo decks, & the most common/well known/has more results, etc)
& just in case you're wondering, yes I voted for high tide.

SI is imo the most crazy one to see, as there is so many right and wrong ways to go of.

I feel like it would have been more appropriate to list it as "High Tide" combo rather than Spiral Tide. For instance, I enjoy Solidarity yet don't find Spiral Tide that interesting.

Honestly I'd lump ANT and TES. They're play styles aren't much different, those TES is obviously way cooler.
Because Doomsday has to fucking be on there dude.
Because Doomsday has to fucking be on there dude.

I voted Dredge as the least obnoxious combo deck on the list to be sitting across. I would have voted for Doomsday, because more often than not - it's /tank for 5 min/ Stack 5 cards, draw a card... FUCKKK. I lose.

I know it only let me do 10 decks! I am trying to fix it, but there doesn't seem to be an option there, so I looked at just closing the forum thread and deleting it, and just making a new one, but I can't do that either because there's no option to "close thread"!

Perhaps a better way to do larger polls would be to just have an input so you can actually type a card name. The mods could sort through the poll results for misspelling, etc. rather quickly and just tally shit up on the poll itself. Granted, you'd probably get a lot of people trolling Stuffy Doll and whatever but then you could also have more control over finding out what people actually think should be banned without having to read massive text walls or entire threads.
Also, I can't imagine that SI won't win this thread. And I'm sure nobody will expect it to until it does. I mean, what other deck do you know of that's badass enough to have its own Monty Python skit? By the way... best ring tone ever.

I voted Sneak and Show because when I'm sitting across from it, it generally resolves 1 combo spell and 1-2 permanents, unlike Storm based decks and Dredge that involve a chain of spells/triggers.
I do like being seated across from Dredge and Reanimator game 2 & 3 though with some means to interact.

PSI, because I love the look on my opponents' faces when they read my cards--especially Odious Trow.

I'd vote for Doomsday because when I was playing Lands, I once killed them with Cephalid Coliseum.

Glad to see that I am not the only one who thinks SI is quite the feat.
But who picked Sneak & Show?!?
Cast Show and Tell.
Players each put a card on the table.
My card was better than yours!

I agree that Solidarity and Doomsday should have been on there. In my view, Solidarity & PSI are the decks to watch. Whenever I play any of those decks at a local tournament, I'm the player everyone is gathering around.
Why is this? Partly because both decks virtually auto lose if they fizzle (Solidarity goes off in response to lethal damage and PSI plays cards that read "lose the game" on them) so there is a great deal of tension. Equally, they are draw dependent (or "non linear") decks that have to improvise to win. Decks that win via controllable conditions (IGG loop, Show & Tell, etc) are less exciting because (absent disruption) the result is known as soon as they start to go off.
Doomsday would be the one I enjoy the most looking at someone able to do that, simply because it requires nuts training.
I can't really vote for Dredge because it's usually my side of the table that has it =P
So with the given options, I'd either vote for Elves, because it's fun to see the table getting flooded with small green dudes while the opponent gets pissed (although sometimes I'm the one pissed), and then SI, because well, if someone is running SI, it's already worth noting. xD

My top four (I don't really have a favorite) are: Dredge, Reanimator, Elves and SneakShow, because you can have a good chance with fair decks to beat them (not like all kind of storm decks).
But the winner for me is SneakShow, because I love the face when they realise that their Griselbrand gets stopped by a 2/1 creature that they cheated into play with Show and Tell.

SneakShow player aren't that smart. They usually scoop when they see something they don't know XD.
Now on a serious note. With my DnT deck my chances to win against SnT are better than 50% and Phyrexian Revoker is one of the reason and the second is strong removal and disruption, pre and post board. So if he can atack with Griselbrand many turns after a resolved Phyrexian Revoker he was usually lucky or activated Griselbrand at least once.

Watching any combo deck go off is the biggest troll ever. Most of the time you know you're beat, but the opponent has to sit there and figure out if he can kill you with 10 mana floating, 8 storm and hellbent Infernal Tutor on the stack. The worst is therefore High Tide, because they can't even say "IT for IT for Tendrils and kill you?", you're not mathematically dead and they have to play it out.
So naturally I picked Dredge just because everyone hates it, even combo players.

Truth. I picked my deck, because well..I just fucking LOVE (G)rapeshotting for 50-60 after drawing my deck.
The only reason SI is interesting to watch is because it doesn't fizzle once a year and you're left with the thought of, "OMG, is this it?! Is it actually going to work? Aww, shux, nope."

Somehow I knew Bryant Cook would pick TES >^,^< Now if we can just get the hatfields to come on here and give high tide 2 more votes ha ha
I really should finish making spanish inquisition myself, noone would expect it at the local metagames I go to, though I am already known for pushing combo or "wonky" decks like prison stax or pox, i just love resource denial when it comes to my opponent having no lands in play
maybe that's my new goal, just make every combo deck available that's viable in type 1.5, though cherri0s would be lol.

I agree with Bryant, nothing feels better than pulling off a ridiculous grapeshot. It's also nice to swing with Emrakul and/or Griselbrand on turn 2 but that's not as difficult and it doesn't really feel earned.

Well... our chief weapon is surprise. Surprise and Fear. So 2 Weapons. Fear and Surprise.. and Ruthless Efficiency. Three Weapons! Fear, Surprise, Ruthless Efficiency.. and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope.
Hmm... perhaps I might need to order us some nice red uniforms. So we can have 5 weapons.
Oh and we board in 15 cards to shore up our worst matchup. Surprise!
EDIT:
I just read some of the above comments. I don't know how it could be fun watching anyone play AdN as engine. Is auto-pilot storm really that interesting to watch? I can, however, see people picking it because they like playing it.
Also, ask anyone who has actually played with blue against the PSI post-board grind plan. Most people I've encountered or read reports about have claimed its the most fun they've had playing magic in a long time (for both players). Sure TES can showboat with Grapeshot, but the harder combo decks to play, granted they might not be as viable as TES, but they are WAY more fun to watch because going off with the deck is literally showboating.

No I definitely meant that. Solidarity? Spiral Tide? Dredge? SI? Way more fun to watch than Ad Nauseam engines. Granted, if you're Grapeshotting through Teeg, then thats pretty boss. Otherwise, meh..

Cephalid Breakfast should definitely be on here. Watching your opponents reaction to combining two almost useless cards to kill with the Mimeoplasm of all things is the best.

There's a lot of combo decks that could be listed, but it only let me do 10 choices, so stuff from cephalid breakfast to cheeri0s, DDFT, hypergenesis, dream halls, bomberman (though who plays that lol) did not get included, i just had to put up the 10 most known and base it off of that.

Seriously. There are combo decks, and there are combo decks, the kind that make combo a thing of beauty. Sneak Show is a good deck, but not what I'd call a combo deck player's combo deck.
Anyway, voted T.E.S. Must echo those who say High Tide > Spiral Tide. I would have voted for that one.
