Hi, I made top 8 at Mythic Games this past weekend with Zombardment (Tribal Can't Block) and decided (was convinced) I should write a report since I played a deck many people think is a joke. I went to Jupiter Games the weekend before and went 3-2 with my only losses in the first 2 rounds against Merfolk (exact same 75)... I don't want to talk about it...
Here's my list:
4 Gravecrawler
4 Carrion Feeder
4 Bloodghast
4 Blood Artist
4 Tidehollow Sculler
4 Cabal therapy
3 Thoughtseize
4 Faithless looting
4 Lingering Souls
3 Goblin Bombardment
2 Bitterblossom
4 Bloodstained Mire
4 Verdant Catacombs
3 Marsh flats
3 Badlands
3 Scrubland
2 Swamp
1 Undiscovered Paradise
Sideboard:
3 Disenchant
2 Grave Pact
2 Phyrexian Revoker
2 Path to Exile
2 Dark Confidant
2 Surgical Extraction
1 Extirpate
1 Perish
This is the third time I've put this deck (or similar) together. The first time was mono black and horrible right after the Dark Ascension release... it lasted a day. The second time was a bit before Avacyn Restored, but I got crushed by burn and control decks and gave up on it almost immediately. This time with blood artist I had renewed faith in the deck and decided to try it again and it has been paying off. I made a couple changes to Sam Black's GP List. I swapped a Thoughtseize for a Sculler because he does dual purpose. I also replaced the tragic slip with a blood artist because the singleton slip seemed awkward to me.
and now for the matches.
Round 1: Josh Mosier with UW Miracles
Josh is my Roommate so, I already know what he's playing. I had another deck prepared, but it loses to miracles so i decided to ditch it, good thing too.
Game 1: I had a very fast hand while he continually drew into nothing. Brainstorming and topping into 2 land and additional tops repeatedly. Win!
SB: -4 Blood Artist, -1 Lingering Souls, +3 Disenchant, +2 Phyrexian Revoker
Game 2: A Long game. I get him down quick, but he manages to find a couple termini to stall me. I rip fetches for my Bloodghast to keep pinging him, I think I have him and he swords his own soldier to stay at 1, then he jumps another with Elspeth and swords that one, and he's out of reach. Lose.
Game 3: The Round has nearly ended. I have to kill him fast, I get him down to 5 with lethal on board when time is called. He frantically searches for terminus and can't find it so I win. Win!
1-0 (2-1)
Round 2: Nick Derico with Deadguy
I've played against Nick a few times in the past and he usually plays some kind of maverick or Bant variant, so that's what I expect this time.
Game 1: I open with a Gravecrawler. He inquisitions me, misreads Goblin bombardment and hits therapy instead... the game quickly goes downhill for him from there when I cast bombardment next turn. Win!
SB: -1 Blood Artist, -3 Thoughtseize, +2 Grave Pact, +2 Disenchant.
Game 2: I play double Bitterblossom and 3 Lingering Souls and go for token aggro, he plays Tombstalker on his last turn, then tops. He shows me his mistake after the game as he reveals a Zealous Persecution on top of his deck. I mention that I have 2 Lingering Souls still in my yard so it would have bought him 1 turn. Win!
2-0 (4-1)
Round 3: Kevin McKee with Jund Nic Fit
First I would like to say that I really like this version of the deck. I was never sold on the other versions, but this one looks very well made with a bunch of clever tricks with burning wish.
The Last time I played against Kevin he was playing BWG Nic Fit while I was playing Eva green and he barely squeaked it out in game 3. I like these games, they tend to be very interesting.
Game 1: I play Goblin Bombardment turn 3 after seeing his hand turn 2 and immediately realize my mistake when I remember he has a Pernicious Deed in his hand. I get him down to 7 and he drops a bunch of guys, I can do 5 damage to him, so I decide to just try to live... he draws another deed and deeds for 1 and it's GG. Lose.
SB: -1 Blood Artist, -3 Thoughtseize, +2 Phyrexian Revoker, +2 Grave Pact.
Game 2: I rip apart his hand while he plays 2 Veteran Explorers and sacrifices them. Then top decks a burning wish into Scapeshift to dome me for 36 with Valakut. Lose.
2-1 (4-3)
Round 4: Gabriel Ramirez with BUG Control
Gabe is one of the members of our Ithaca group. I feel kinda bad about the timing of this match-up since I played against him round 5 at Jupiter, crushed him since this is apparently a bad match-up for him, and knocked him out of contention... Because of the timing on this, whichever one of us wins basically makes top 8 and the other doesn't.
Game 1: He gets absolutely destroyed when he keeps a 2 lander, I go turn 2 quad therapy (turn 1 Faithless Looting discard Bloodghast+land, turn 2 Cabal Therapy, play fetch, flashback therapy, crack fetch, play therapy and flash it back), blind hitting double Jace (he drew into the second). Win!
SB: -3 Blood Artist, -2 Bitterblossom, +3 Disenchant, +2 Phyrexian Revoker
Game 2: I start off slow, but I disrupt him a bunch, the he finds a surgical extraction. He looks at my graveyard and misses the Gravecrawler, hitting Lingering Souls instead. I draw a Goblin Bombardment and start going to town with my Gravecrawlers. Then I draw my only Blood Artist left in my deck to double the damage and finish him off. win!
3-1 (6-3)
Round 5: Steve Thompson with Maverick
I'm not entirely sure how this is supposed to go since I have never gone against Maverick with this deck. But we ID, so I guess I still won't know. He was curious to see how the deck played and we intended to play after we got some food, but we got lost on our way back and didn't have time.
Quarterfinals: Timur Babakol with MUD
Timur is part of our Ithaca group, and where the majority of my testing comes from. I know I can't actually beat his deck, but I want to at least try since I almost got there a couple times... almost.
Game 1: Goes about as predicted. Spoiler alert... I lose. I automatically lose the die roll since he is higher seeded than me. He plays something turn 1 and I blind therapy him and miss. Then I sit back and wait for the robots to roll me up and play basketball with my corpse. Lose.
SB: -4 Blood Artist, -2 Bitterblossom, -2 Lingering Souls +3 Disenchant, +2 Phyrexian Revoker, +2 Grave Pact, +1 Path to Exile
Game 2: I keep a 1 lander with a bunch of discard and 2 Disenchants. Blind therapy turn 1 hit Chalice of the Void. He draws another Chalice, I find a Scrubland to Disenchant the chalice, he wastes me, I miss land drops as he plays Lodestone Golem. I can't play anything anymore while he smashes in for 5 every turn. Lose.
