View Full Version : European Legacy Scene: Big Tournaments? Please Contribute

It is sad that there is no "SCG"-like tournament series in Europe. In my opinion the potential would be there , but the language problem and probably a less heteregone [magic] community/culture make it more difficult.
So, I am looking for bigger legacy tournaments in Europe: 60+ people, so we do not have to wait for a BoM or a GP to enjoy a "real" metagame and not the same guys from your city over and over again.
Browsing the web, it is very difficult to find good information about larger tournamnets (potentially UK, Germany, France, Spain or Italy,...), because of the language problem and/or not enough information (price pool, expected players).
So please, post the information about your local tournament series or some special legacy event you know about.
The necessary information would be:
Date, Place
Expected Players or average players from previous tournaments.
Expected Prize Pool
Link to the website/event.
Hi catmint, I'm glad someone started such a thread and I really hope that it houses some constructive discussion. I can attest to the language barrier being an important factor. I am living in France for the past 6 months and I don't speak French (although I learned a bit here it's not enough to have a comfortable conversation). I attended the weeklies here for a while and a couple BoM trials, but recently I stopped going there because there was no way I could blend in. Without speaking the language you are always an outsider amongst a group of locals and even people who speak English tend to ignore you once the game is over and continue bonding with their local buddies. The games are a little tenser if your opponent doesn't speak English either, because there are no ice breakers and every confusion about the game state leads to tension.
Having experienced that I think I would be hesitant to travel to a 100-200 player (anything less than the size of a GP to be honest) tournament somewhere in Europe. I'm sure the majority would naturally be locals who know each other and speak the same language and as "outsiders" who don't speak the language and are a minority, you'd struggle having an enjoyable time.
I also imagine travel restrictions being a probem with different visa restrictions and the number of different nationalities. For example, I'm a Turkish citizen and currently I can travel freely within the Schengen zone since I have a residence permit for France. But in a few months I'll be moving to the UK for work and after that I'll need a Visa for each and every European country. If you are living in the States you are free to travel anywhere and this doesn't apply to Europe unfortunately. So yeah, I see these being a problem for establishing something akin to the SCG series.

I would travel to a bigger tournament now and then and stay for a weekend with buddies/wife to check out the city. Now I am thinking about the LCL in Barcelona on the 11th of August.
However concerning a SCG-like tournament series I think you can easily get people to travel a lot more by having attractive prices and incentives to collect "league points" and if it is a big thing and everyone is looking at it constantly as a meta indicator like SCG, you can be sure that all the local scene will be there.
You can also make some small "leagues" within the series. i.e: CEE championsships over 8 weeks stopping in Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest, Zagreb, Prague or a Tour through some cities in a bigger country. I don't know why no magic shop is trying to setup something like this on a european level. With all the side-events & drafts it should be able to break even on the events and make money on sales.
But back to the topic: No responses yet.... I hope there ARE some big events in europe  and I would of course collect all the posts to summarize all the tournaments in the initial post, so everyone can get an overview.
The Italian UW Standstill/Miracle top 8 guy from GP Ghent told me there'd be a big Legacy tournament in Milan (in November iirc).

Magiccardmarket is starting to do events in ( east ) germany, if they do well they might become some kind of successor to SCG. Right now I'm sceptical, but the market is as well know as SCG and actually the driving force behind card prices in Europe. I guess they might have the ressources, but either don't care, or lack experience. A friend and I already talked about a possible magiccardmarket series, if the logistics allow it. The biggest problem is that Europe is a bit behind with coverage, once the TO's would do some people would actually recgonize the events and there would be a spike in popularity. Thing is that non native english speakers would have to talk, but I guess people prefer understable coverage with accents to... french coverage.
catmint

Yes... we would have to bear with the beatiful  german, french and eastern europe accents, but a decent coverage is absolutely necessary!

Philipp seems quite interested too, hope you'll come to the event
I wonder why Starcity does not just do the European tournaments themselves. It could be lack of resources. The crew work pretty hard keeping up with what they are doing now so Pete would have to train up a second crew and move them around Europe, get them all visas, arrange for lodging and convention rooms in a dozen foreign nations. Ah. Maybe I do know why.
They could try to do a European leg of their Invitational Qualifier series. You know, the local store just takes up the franchise..

I'll be there as well...! this thread already paid off.
Maybe we should just get a subforum for european scene, with some sticky threads for regular big tournaments and normal tournament announcements like this.
I will most likely attend as well, as kiblast advertised this to me earlier. Good to see more high profile tournaments in Europe as well.

In September, there's a WPN Premium Tournament in Nuremberg, Germany. 4 rounds of each Modern and Legacy with an insane amount of booster displays for the entire Top8. We expect around 70-80 players to attend.
Only downside? You have to first qualify by top4'ing one of the weekly Legacy events there. Glad I already did several times :D

Because everybody speaks English. The tournament itself was never meant to attract as many people as it eventually did. However, I guess it's not worth it travelling from Denmark to Bavaria in order to qualify first...unless you're looking for real competition. Three of the Top9 of Ghent was from that shop :-)
Because everybody speaks English.
Unfortunately, this is just a short-sighted assumption.
Anyway, I guess he was talking about the tournament in Italy.

About 3-4 guys from Slovenia will also be there. Main legacy event on the Saturday looks awesome, but I can't really say that modern prizes and side event legacy on the Sunday look all that exciting.
But I'm definetly looking forward to playing a big legacy tournament and do lots of trading.. and hopefully obtain the last few hard to get foils (I'm looking at you Tarmogoyf, Jace and espically those friggin 7th ed foil Goblin matrons).

In case you are referring to the Italian tournament: I guess there is no English version because the TO himself can't quite speak English decently. Also, this tournament is a fixed event taking place every year (this is the 7th edition), so he probably expects people to be already aware of it.
I've been there for almost every edition and I can assure you that judges and staff can speak English and they make sure to make announcements both in Italian and English. Of course they won't have a perfect British accent, but still
Main legacy event on the Saturday looks awesome, but I can't really say that modern prizes and side event legacy on the Sunday look all that exciting.
Knowing how the TO works, I believe he posted the guaranteed prize pool, i.e. the prizes that will be awarded no matter what. He usually upgrades prizes according to attendance. I guess with the two events you named he wanted to keep a bit on the safe side, as Modern isn't such an established format yet in Italy, and he was unsure about how many people would attend the Sunday legacy (vintage used to be very popular in Italy and he is probably afraid that the vintage event would "steal" many players from the legacy side event). I'm confident that in the end prizes will be adequate to attendance.
Guys, gotta come
Well, providing an official English information page/text should be standard, if you expect foreign attendance. If you, as a TO (generally speaking), don't speak English very well, just get someone who does.
I would love to attend the event, but I'm just a student and Canadian Threshold + GP Ghent weren't cheap. :D

He got a playset of the beautiful Player Rewards Wastelands and a fucking metal maindeck/sideboard-divider that has a picture of Jace and "Best Eternal Player 2012" engraved.
Oh and he played Dredge in both Legacy and Vintage. Pyromancer's Ascension in Modern.

Yeah, you'd have to lucksack a good flight into Eindhoven. Most people who show up are Dutch, or from the BeNeLux region and Germany. A few French and Danish make it, maybe they're expats like me. Probably the only American who shows up...
Anyways, I've been to the last three over the last few years and they've always been super sweet events. Starting on time, run like clockwork. Only once have I seen an unruly player who got DQ'd for being a sleazebag. But the judges handled that like a boss, too. Top 16 gets duals, 32 gets boosters and stuff. Top 8 won't pay for any plane tickets but if you're missing anything for a deck you basically have it.

One question, how much experience should one have before attempting to go to such an event?
I have the feeling that there will be a lot of realy good players with crazy decks, so I guess someone like me who's only playing magic for two months now would go down horribly, right? ^^

Do not worry about it. A lot will depend on your pairings. Play magic for the fun and a big tournament will reward you straight away because it is fun. It is also a great oppertunity to gain legacy experience. This will be my 3rd Dutch Legacy championchip and I played best during my first tournament.

Hi, I want to mention that there will be an event at the end of this year in Hanau. 3 days of Magic with a big tournament for Highlander, Legacy, Vintage and a Modern PTQ for Pro Tour San Diego (Pro Tour Gatecrash?). There will also be a lot of little Sidevents over the course of the weekend.

There is a Legacy tournament in Poland, on 9.12, in Bydgoszcz. The details aren't known yet, but the guaranteed prize is 1000 PLN (~250 euro) for the winner.
The details will be probably posted here: http://www.mtgnews.pl/forum/viewtopic.php?f=134&t=60518 (it's in Polish, but you can use google translate).
Most players here speak good english, especially legacy players, so there should be no problems communicating.

10-10-2012, 11:15 AM
Sure, as soon as the organizer posts some detail, it might take them some time to do so, they just wanted to post the date early.
The only details right now is the date-9.12.2012 and the city in which the tournamet will take place - Bydgoszcz.
It's possible that there will be a smaller Legacy or Modern tournament on the 8th of december, but it won't have any guaranteed prizes.

The one in Hanau sounds realy interesting, there's a good chance I'll be there.
Biggest question: If there is no such circuit, then why dont we, the european legacy community, start it?
I think the potential is there.
Also for those in Scandinavia and around, there will be a 100 player tournament (http://poromagia.com/index.php?page=tournaments&tournid=644) in Helsinki on the 8th of December. The last year the winner got a foil japanese Sensei's Divining Top and a solid store credit. Some russian troops from Saint-Petersburg will land there. If you are sure you'd like to attend, it's better to preregister via organizer's e-mail.
And just in case someone is planning to visit Moscow, there will be a ~100-120 player tournament on the 24th of November with an incredible amount of useless packs in prizes and a challenge cup for the winner. It will take place in a restaurant so expect some insanity by the end of the tourny. The tournament thread is here (http://topdeck.ru/forum/index.php?showtopic=15760) but it's in Russian, so you google translate or pm me if there's something you'd like to know.

Hi,
In France, there is a tournament series called the "CDF" (Championnat de France). I don't know many the details, but as I recall it consist of a main invitational tournament which is fed by a whole series of local tournaments. Local TO's are contacted (I don't know if there is cross-TO communication) and can have their tournament be included in the trial calender. Attending those tournaments earn the players qualification points of sorts, with bonuspoint for high finishes. Then, the top X (or maybe there is a cap) are invited to compete for a good prize pool/bragging rights/... . At least, that's how I've understood the series to be working based on a few announcements which crossed our border.
Speaking for my own region, Belgium, we have 2 tournament series worth mentioning.
Outpost Gamecenters, which are the leading gaming store franchise (3 stores: Ghent, Antwerp, Brussels), are organizing a tournament series called the "Outpost Opens" (formerly "Masters"). It consist of a few (5-ish) 3-day events, each containing a super-FNM (standard or draft) on friday, a large €1000 (store credit) sealed deck tournament on saturday and a large €1000 (store credit) Legacy tournament on Sunday. Intertwined with all their other tournaments (various regular tournaments, GPTs, PTQs) these also feed into some sort of player club system (http://www.outpost.be/website/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=350&Itemid=50). Participation: approx. 70-100 players for the saturday/sunday portions of the Open tournaments.
Specifically for Legacy, there is also the Belgian Legacy Cup, which as of matter of fact I am coördinating this year. It's meant to be the (un)official Legacy National Championship, and has been running since 2008. It consist of a series of trials througout the year, at places with strong Legacy scenes regardless of the proximity of a store. The trials award byes (2 for first, 1 for second) for the Main Event at the end of the year. The Main Event is open for everyone to attend, including foreigners - in fact, the Dutch came to claim our title 3 years back, an event we still mourn :(. It awards infinite bragging rights and a large garanteed prize pool (this year: all 10 duals for first, all 10 fetches for second). More information regarding the trials, the main event (details should be up by the end of this week), past results (we still hope to be able to retrieve some old decklists, I rebuilt the website recently) and the concept of the Belgian Legacy Cup itself, you can visit our website (http://belgianlegacycup.wordpress.com).
Hope this answers your call for feedback a bit :).

I wrote some details earlier in this thread. See post #60. The entry fee is 20Eur, the prize pool consists of 5 boosters per person + medals and a cup. I doubt there will be any side events, but perhaps something will be organized on the next day.

Sadly the Entrance fee/price pool doesn't make it worth to travel, still nice while staying in Prague, btw. the shop runs legacy series of similar proportions, 1 each month, DCI +1round, no top8
