View Full Version : [GP] Denver - Jan 5-6, 2013
Yay for more Legacy Grand Prix!
Boo for ice cold temperatures in a city not known for high Legacy attendance.

Both of the other GPs I was planning on attending turned out to be standard (Atlantic City and Quebec) so I think I'm going to go all out and hit up Denver as well. I'm finishing my last semester of school, so I think a celebration is in order.

Been meaning to visit some buddies in Colorado for a while now, looks like the perfect time to plan my getaway, although I was supposed to go to Paris for a conference and a vacation with my girlfriend in January...
*I can see it now*
"Sweetheart, Denver is like the Paris of America. You wouldn't have enjoyed the phenomenology conference anyway, I'm doing YOU a favor!"
"We're going to Paris."

GP Denver Good Times Guide
I may update with links later, but for now I'm assuming you're all smart enough to use google. More to come as I have time.
Food
Fine Dining
Beatrice & Woodsley - Full disclaimer, I used to work here, but I still think they have some of the most interesting and innovative food in the city, and by far the most interesting interior design. On the current menu, the meat-n-beet and and chicken-fried duck burger are batshit-crazy-good. Brunch is always solid too (get a rasher of bacon, you will not be disappointed), and the cocktails are usually good, though I find them a bit fussy.
Fruition - If B&W is the the most innovative restaurant around, Fruition is probably the most solid. Competent staff, good wine list, and they own their own farm where they get most of their eggs, produce, and make some really excellent cheeses. Book well in advance, because the place is tiny. Also no parties bigger than 4.
Z Cuisine/A Cote - Phenomenal French bistro. Z cuisine is the restaurant proper, while A Cote is the Absinthe/wine bar next door. They share a kitchen though, so the real difference is that Z is much harder to get into, but has a menu that changes daily, whereas the A Cote menu is a more stable selection of a few favorites. Excellent charcuterie.
Dirty Good Time
Tacos y Salsas #3 - Best tacos I've had since leaving TX, hands down. Carnitas, Deshebrada, Lengua, and Barbacoa are all not to be missed.
Lao Wang Noodle House - Usually crowded, hot, terrible service, but absurdly amazing xiao long bao (think wonton soup, but the soup is in the wonton...mind = blown)
Pho 95 - There are about 300 numbered Pho places along South Federal, but I can vouch for this one being consistently excellent. Be aware that it's going to be packed on a cold weekend night, and you'll probably be sitting uncomfortably close to a perfect stranger. On the upside, it'll smells way better inside than most Magic event spaces.
Snarf's (many locations) - Best. Sandwiches. Ever. Get an Italian with everything, weep.
Brekkie
Honestly I don't go out for breakfast much, feel free to send me suggestions.
Denver Diner - Yeah it's all frozen hashbrowns and pre-made everything, etc. But the coffee is good, service is fast, and they never ever fuck up eggs over medium. Pretty much all you can ask for in a greasy spoon.
Santiago's - Denver has a thing about "green chili" which is a spicy green/orange pork-based southwestern kind of sauce. Santiago's is known for theirs being spicy as all hell, and selling these tiny breakfast burritos by the dozen with eggs and potato and green chili. It's a chain, so there may be one relatively close to the event site.
Drink
Upscale/Cocktails
Colt and Gray - This place has a full menu, but I was not super impressed with the restaurant, especially when compared to the bar, which has some of the best cocktails in town. Interesting original drinks that aren't overdone, and great versions of about any classic you can think up. The bar snacks menu is great too, they make a lot of good charcuterie in house, and the portions on the cheese plate are fairly generous. Don't miss the crispy pig's trotter.
Bars
Hops & Pie - Awesome place. Great pizza and sandwiches, great beer selection that changes regularly.
Euclid Hall - This is really more of a restaurant, but I'm not super impressed with their food, but they keep a lot of good beers around.
Providence Tavern - This is my neighborhood joint. Good beer selection, really fucking good hamburgers.
Falling Rock Tap House - Tons of beer on tap (mostly leans towards Belgians), generic bar food, douchey part of town.
Breweries
For now this is just one big jumbled list in no particular order, because there are just too many to go into detail. Fort Collins is about an hour and a half north, Boulder is 30-45min northwest.
Breckenridge (Kalmath St. location)
O'Dell Brewing(Fort Collins)
Upslope (Boulder)
Strange Brewing
Denver Beer Company
Golden City Brewery (Golden)
Coors (when in Rome?) (Golden)
Oskar Blues (Lyons, north of Boulder)
New Belgium (Fort Collins)
Boulder Beer Company
Dry Dock (Aurora)
Wynkoop
Avery (Boulder)
Great Divide
Left Hand (Longmont, N of Boulder)
I'm sure there are plenty I'm forgetting and will get yelled at about.
Stuff to Do
Brewery Tours - See list above. Coors is actually interesting just because of the scale, also self-guided so you can basically skip to the free beer part.
Lannie's Clocktower Cabaret - I cannot stress enough how awesome this place can be. The late night burlesque/variety shows (Thurs-Sat, 11pm) are always excellent. Good mix of comedy, magic, variety, and of course, boobs.
Go Outside
Note that you can rent just about any outdoor equipment you might want at REI. There is a huge flagship store on Platte St. near downtown.
Skiing - Winter Park, Loveland, and Arapahoe Basin are all the closest resorts (I think). Keep going and you'll hit Aspen, Vail, Copper Mtn, Breckenridge, etc.
Snowshoeing - No idea where to go, but you can rent shoes at REI. If anyone is actually interested I can ask a friend that's into it.
Ice Skating - The lake at Evergreen is where it's at, and only 5$ (not counting skate rental)
Hot Springs - If you really want to make a vacation out of it, about 3hrs west of Denver you run into Glenwood Springs and Steamboat Springs. There are hot spring resorts/lodges/cabins all over the place out there.

I think I may attend this one. One non-blue Beta dual or a trip to a GP...GP it is.
I'll book the time off work and start rationing the incomes.
I'm hoping we don't get snowed in or anything, that's my only concern. How's the airport's reliability? Flying during the Christmas high doesn't seem the nicest, either.

DIA is generally pretty good. We get a good bit of snow (obviously), so they have learned pretty well how to deal with it there. The airport itself is really nice as well, in my opinion.
Definitely looking forward to Legacy in my own stomping grounds - hopefully there will be a good enough turnout and excitement that we can expand our Legacy scene here. :)

Legacy AND within driving distance AND during winter break, how can I not go?
Huzzah
I hope this will be the shot in the arm the local legacy scene needs to become a bit more active.
As far as DIA and our winter weather are concerned I would be put it as a non issue. Yea we "occasionally" get snow in the city but no worse than anywhere back east or in the midwest.

I will probably be going to this.
Denver's main airport is pretty reliable. It is one of the busiest (passenger count) in the USA.
It also has a bar every 50 feet. There's no airport I'd rather be stuck in for any amount of time.
Legacy in Denver in January? WTF are they thinking?
Guess I'll be there.

I guess it's along the same lines as Atlanta in July. WotC seems to be a bit confused lately. Or maybe this is how they kill Legacy. Can't wait for GP Tuscon in August and GP Fairbanks next December.

That was pretty awesome in Atlanta, when they broke their all time high record on Sunday that was set on Saturday. :(
Seriously though, January is usually not too bad - we don't tend to get a lot of snow then either. February-March are much worse.

GP Tucson in May would be worse because it's hotter and the monsoons wouldn't have started yet.
Then again, 105F temperatures with 35-40% humidity is its own special variety of painful.
EDIT: GP Yuma in May: 115F outside at noon, have fun with that.

Where/How do I get one?
They were distributed at GP Providence and to mods/admins in a very limited fashion; WotC nixed them because of using card art and no progress was made on getting permission.
Assuming it works out with me attending, I would likely try to set up a Source table at the GP and have some sort of Source swag.

i don't think they've announced the venue yet. at least based on my searching. i sure hope it's somewhere decent downtown...
Every GP Denver so far has been at the Crowne Plaza (former Holiday Inn DIA). I doubt the trend will change considering how inexpensive the venue is.
since we're getting legacy in denver... is it too much to hope that the luck streak keeps going and it's NOT at the crowne plaza? :(

Ugh, flights look like they're murder since it's right around the holidays. Regularly $200, now $500. Fuck my life. 2400km roadtrip that would be 24+ hours of solid driving versus the flight cost? $70 per tank, 450km per tank (abouts, but probs better since it's all highway), so say, to be conservative, 6 tanks of gas = $420. Might as well fly :/

At worst if staying at the Crowne Plaza there's a free airport shuttle; there's also a bunch more hotels 2-3 mi down 40th all with airport shuttles, which some may consider "walking distance".
There'll probably be someone with a car in the hotel row willing to bus people back and forth to the venue too, I'm sure.

If it's at the Crowne Plaza, I would wait to book. They will almost certainly offer a discounted room rate, and it's not a bad hotel. If not, there are a dozen hotels right down the street. A cursory search on hotels.com is showing rooms for $60+/night.

Not the Denver Convention Center, the Crowne Plaza "convention center". I think the Crowne refers to it as the "airport convention center" or something - it's attached to the hotel, it's not all that big.
It's on East 40th, about 10 miles from DIA and otherwise pretty much in the middle of nowhere.

Really depends on the airline. Southwest is pretty good about allowing you to transfer your funds (of course, the cost of the new flight will probably be higher), but others like Delta & United rape you in the ass for changing flights even slightly.

Nah, that's not true for United. I almost rebooked at GP Atlanta mid-day on Sunday, and they were going to charge me $25. Seems fine... although granted, I have Premiere Executive status or whatever with them, so maybe that made the difference.

Yeah that does. I recently flew United (2 weeks ago) and they wanted to charge me about $400 to change my flight...
Just book the flight on Monday and take the day off work.
This is indeed the plan since I hate travelling one day then having to immediately have to go to work the next day (and all my vacation time resets Jan 1 anyways, woo hoo!).

Status is the difference. There's a $75 change fee on United for same-day (eg, new flight is within 24 hours of original flight time), $150 for non-same-day. That's on top of the fare difference, of course. Most of the other majors are in the same ballpark.
Only a discount airline is going to give you cheap or free ticket changes, and even then only some - Southwest is the only one I can think of offhand with absolutely no change fees.

How's the drive to Denver in the winter time? A little naivety on my part, but I'm thinking of driving from Phoenix, Arizona but I've never driven in snow before (since you know, Arizona). What exactly do I need to be careful of and is there any special equipment I need for my car (like chains or something)?
Driving seems like hell but I don't wanna pay $250-300 per person for a flight...we'll see though I guess.

I'd suggest a car with front wheel drive at the minimum, and a decent amount of height for clearance. Nothing spectacular, but no low-riding sports cars with rear wheel drive.
If I were driving, I'd bring chains, blanket, spare tire, reflectors, etc. I'd calculate the gas out, though. Phoenix to Denver will still take a few thanks, if my geography is correct.
Also, I wouldn't might bendering all of Sunday night with the Source crew, since I'll be 21 at the time (finally).

Driving seems like hell but I don't wanna pay $250-300 per person for a flight...we'll see though I guess.
A car will do. C-dot (local plows) are really good. Unless we get blasted for half a foot of snow, the commute won't be bad. I have a 2 wheel sports car and I have to drive up to 10,000 feet every day for work.
I've done Denver to Phoenix a few times because of family in Phoenix. The worst part about it is it's 14 hours, really painful to do in a single day - especially in winter. Does help if you split driving.
Most of it is desert, but Flagstaff and/or the 3 hours of mountain prior to Denver can be a major pain if there's been weather.

GP Denver 08 had both that family of GP thieves and the local yugioh thieves going to town; one guy alone had a $6K(?) bag stolen and the total was something like $30K.
Fortunately when SCG took over for '11 things were much cleaner AFAIK.

Unfortunately, by far the worst thing about the Crowne Plaza is that it's at least 15min from any kind of good food or drink, unless your idea of a hot night on the town is the bar at Applebees. So clearly what we need to be discussing here is not splitting rooms or weather conditions, but who's going to be DD for a bunch of nerds?

Is it worth me flying in at like 8 in the morning (ie, are there restaurants/things to see around where the GP is at) or should I keep my more comfortable flight that gets in at 2:00 or so?
unfortunately the event site is about 15-20 minutes from actual Denver. Which blows. you be the judge, i guess, but there is certainly a lot of good food and great beer/drinks in denver. trust whatever list Richard Cheese comes up with - he knows some great places and has exquisite taste in drinks.
You could check in to the hotel (or leave your bags at the desk) and bus/cab into Denver - there's plenty to do in the actual city, the site is in the middle of nowhere. There are some pretty decent fast food options across the street from the site which is nice for the tournament.

Woo yeah, I saw Helene Bergeot's tweets that Koby saw. Hopefully it turns out to be at the airport Crowne Plaza.
I'm flying out Monday simply because I hate flying out late then having to go to work the next day.

100% sure.
a) There was no way it could be downtown in the first place.
b) The TO confirmed it was the Crowne airport convention center, which is who Helene was supposedly getting her info from in the first place.
I don't often smoke pot. But as of dec 6th Colorado has done the right thing and legalized it. I look forward to walking around Denver blazing.

Early January in Denver is, on average, 60F with little to no snow on the ground. Barring a blizzard (which does happen every few years), not quite Hoth.

Besides, Lincoln is Hoth. You have to have a desolate landscape with no civilization for hundreds of miles. Denver doesn't qualify.

I don't think Legion is releasing anything until after GP San Antonio this weekend.
There are always grinders and side events Friday at a GP.

So would a grinder on Friday possibly earn you byes in the main event, since it is an open registration tournament?

That's what grinders are, yes - 32 person, single elimination events that award 3 byes to the winner.

Thought that'd be the case, especially with how last time people weren't allowed to play with the mats.
Can we still look into making more?

The problem is with me; I haven't had the time/motivation to do it. It takes a fair amount of lead time to produce a design and have them printed.
It's true that the old design (or similar) can't be used, but there are a couple of ideas that don't use WotC copyrights.

Depending on where you're staying; some hotels provide free driving within a 6 mile radium.
Worst comes to worst, Shuttle from the gp hotel to the airport, then get a shuttle from there to your hotel. I did that last time.

Fly if possible. I just checked Google maps out of curiosity, and the estimation was 23 hours. Also, there was this:
Continue to follow Co Rd 62/Geneva Rd
This road may be seasonally closed
Since this event will be in Denver in the heart of winter, there could be lots of roads closed.

Very good point about road closures, ESG, thanks for the heads up. Maybe I'll just bite the bullet and buy a plane ticket, but they're like $300 from Portland--if they were $200, it would be a lot easier.

If you can plan on returning on Monday, you can save a bunch on airfare. I see a round trip itinerary for $217, fly down on 1/4 with Frontier and return on 1/7 with Southwest.

Ok, as far as Thursday night goes, I think we should decide on doing a Legacy event or a food/drink meetup, but not both. The majority of our local player base is going to have a hard time making it to anything earlier than 6pm, and at that point even a small event is going to run to 10-11pm, and like I said before, none of the LGSs here are really within close proximity to any nightlife. Doesn't mean it can't happen, but I'm guessing a lot of locals will also have to work the next day and probably bail on any late-night drinking shenanigans. I guess if there are a ton of people getting into town early on Thursday and really want to play a sanctioned event, I can set something up with one of the stores during the daytime, and the Denver/Boulder/etc. crew could just join up later.
Just so I have an idea of where to go, how many people are interested in meeting up on Thursday? What time are you getting in? If you had to choose, would you rather have a Legacy event or just go for some food and drink? What kind of food/drink do you like?
sdematt
12-03-2012, 06:14 PM
I'd just be fine with a meet and greet anyways where we could mingle. A restaurant may be difficult, so I was thinking a games store for that purpose.
I agree that it should be one or the other, but not both. I'd rather NOT play Legacy, since we'll grind that all weekend anyway.
For food? Anything's fine.

Any predictions regarding turnout? $30,000/750 players = $40 registration fee, and that seems reasonable (Atlanta got 900 and Indianapolis and Providence both got 1,200).
Also, I'm still looking for a room so please PM me if you're interested in splitting one. Happy to sleep on the ground as I'm a small college student.

Where's your sense of adventure?! I say we meet somewhere with a great beer list and good food and that's centrally located. I know a lot of people are going to be at the Hyatt, but there are a handful of locals that will probably come out, and let's be honest, there's really nothing worth seeing by the Hyatt besides a dizzying array of chain restaurants. If there are multiple people splitting a cab, it's usually pretty cheap, and we can possibly talk about rides from locals.
One decent option might be Rackhouse Pub, which is part of a local whiskey distillery. It's got a good amount of space, is near downtown, the food is decent (although they refuse to fry anything, pussies), they have a good selection of beers, and they have whiskey flights.
I can handle making reservations or suggesting a variety of other places, but it's hard for me to do that without having a more concrete idea of who's planning on coming out. If it's a small group, maybe we find something more adventurous (Freshcraft, Euclid Hall, Wazee Supper Club, etc.), or something more low-key (Atomic Cowboy, Goosetown Tavern, Providence Tavern, My Brother's Bar, etc.). Still hard to say at this point.
Right now, I count these people for a Thursday meetup:
