So, If I blink Lignify with anything (Venser, The Sojourner as an example) and go to attach it to Progenitus. What happens?

My initial thought is that it would attach and "restrict" (for lack of a better word) Progenitus because the continuous effect would remove the Protection before could remove the aura (since that's a state based action and wouldn't exist due to the continuous effect). Another Judge and I started questioning because technically, it "can't" attach due to 702.15c (below) and "can't" is one of the strongest words in the rules for magic. The only issue with that is that rule references that the creature creature has aura's matching the protected quality already attached.

So, I guess the question becomes, "Can it attach or is that a clarification for if the enchanted gains the protection post enchanting?"

Protection
702.15c - A permanent or player with protection can’t be enchanted by Auras that have the stated quality. Such Auras attached to the permanent or player with protection will be put into their owners’ graveyards as a state-based action.

Oracle for Lignify
10/1/2007: Lignify will overwrite static abilities that come from the creature itself (such as the one on Verduran Enchantress) because Lignify causes the creature to lose that ability before it gets a chance to apply.

When the Aura looks for valid selections, it cannot attach to any object that it would be restricted from doing so.

Possible "cannot attach" restrictions:
* Wrong object type
* Protection from <trait>

Since Progenitus has protection from <everything>, it cannot be enchanted.
This is obvious different when Humility/Sudden Spoiling are in effect.

303.4f. If an Aura is entering the battlefield under a player's control by any means other than by resolving as an Aura spell, and the effect putting it onto the battlefield doesn't specify the object or player the Aura will enchant, that player chooses what it will enchant as the Aura enters the battlefield. The player must choose a legal object or player according to the Aura's enchant ability and any other applicable effects.

What Koby said. Protection prevents enchanting/equipping/fortifying by sources of the specified quality. You can get around targeting by bringing in an aura indirectly, but Progenitus is still not a legal choice for the aura to attach to when it enters the battlefield.
