View Full Version : Would this card be broken?

Or would it invalidate other discard options (I personally don't think so):

Mind Scourge B, Sorcery: Split second (As long as this spell is on the stack, players can’t play spells or activated abilities that aren’t mana abilities.) Target player reveals his or her hand. You choose a sorcery or instant card from it. That player discards that card.

An awesome sideboard card against combo and control, but sucks against (for example) Maverick.

It is far from being broken. It will not see Maindeck play for the same reason Duress did not. Even combo decks want their Discard spells to take out problematic permanents. As one usually does not mind a Discard spell absorbing a counterspell, this card pretty much just speaks: No More In Response Brainstorm.

It would probably just replace Duress in any list that still uses it, if any of those are still around. Thoughtsieze and inquisition would still be used over it, since they hit more cards people are concerned with usually.

Split second or not, that is far too narrow to see play in anything but the sideboard.

I saw this one in another thread somewhere, and liked the concept:

Name
Sorcery
B
Name a nonland card. Target player reveals his or her hand and discards all cards with that name. If a card was discarded this way, search that players library and exile all cards with that name.

Very cool! Nice with Gitaxian Probe.

I think this would be good:

Mind Manipulation B

Target player reveals his or her hand. That player discards a nonland card with converted mana cost four or less from their hand. You lose 2 Life.

Scrye 1

I've almost made up my mind that purely "reactive" cards can never be broken. By reactive, I mean that they counter or pre-empt a plan an opponent has - they don't further your strategy or gain you more resources. I know my hairs are gonna get split to death on this but I basically mean that Disenchant is reactive and Tidings is proactive. Strip Mine is probably proactive, since I'd say Stone Rain would be. But cards like Duress seem narrowly-tailored enough that they're there to stop something an opponent is doing.

Unless you tack on ridiculous riders ("this is Duress plus Ancestral Recall for B") then I don't see something that functions on an opponent having a resource being broken.

Scry seems out of place do you mean fateseal 1?

Fateseal 2 would be better, as it would directly counter any Brainstorm shenanigans.

Some might say that Mental Misstep and Counterbalance are broken.
