It's once again time to register for the Source Secret Santa. Here's the rules:

1) Please edit your first post in this thread with your wish list. This is to reduce clutter and make lists easier to find.

2a) If you are participating in Canada, the United States, or Mexico, please PM me the following: your name, your receiving address, whether you can ship internationally, and whether you want to serve as a backup Santa for people who don't receive packages.

2b) If you are participating from outside North America, please PM kiblast (http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/member.php?30457-kiblast) the following: your name, your receiving address, whether you can ship internationally, and whether you want to serve as a backup Santa for people who don't receive packages.

3) The deadline to register is Friday, November 16th at 5 pm PST. Addresses will go out the following week. Please post in this thread or notify your region coordinator once you've shipped. If there is going to be a delay in your shipment, please notify your region coordinator ASAP so we can take that into account when assigning backup Santas.

4) Backup Santas: It's my impression that last year there were some issues with people not receiving packages. If you are willing to put together backup packages to send to people who don't receive anything by January 4th, 2013, please say so when you PM myself or kiblast your participation information.

And lastly, a friendly reminder: please keep in mind when making your list that not everyone is going to be loaded. Try not to fill your wishlist with $40+ cards - put some cheaper stuff on there too for people of more limited means who aren't rolling in format staples. $25 is the recommended minimum shipment value.

Had a spectacular time last year, can't wait to send off another package for a lucky dude/dudette this year. My recipient didn't post in the brag thread last year, so my sick Slash Panthers / Santa's Reindeer sharpie alters never saw the light of day. I can't remember which card was Santa...Perhaps better that way, but he got some sweet (real) stuff too!

I have a foil common/uncommon cube that is also fully foil and I want to slowly upgrade to foreign foil, so any inclusions for that would be great. Basically if it was ever first pick or second quick quality in its set it's probably good enough to make it in (so long as it was powerful on its own and not just powerful because of in set synergy). And if I get something that isn't in already, I can find it a septal secret Santa reserved spot.

I collect foils dreams of any kind. This started with the dream cycle from torment, but now I collect anything with foil with the word "dreams in the title.

I collect foil engineered explosives since my initials are EE. I am currently looking for a simplified Chinese foil version, so if by some act of god I got one of those, my head would probably explode from sheer happiness.

I'd also be happy with pretty much any sweet foils for EDH as well.

-) I love German foil things. Jap foil is also sweet, but I tend to keep Jap foils to one Vintage deck and my Nic Fit Rector deck. Everything else is German or English.
-) I'm slowly rebuilding my collection of staples after having to drop most of my non-deck cards while unemployed. To that end, I'd love anything for MUD (as built by Zirath on here) except for Wastelands, which I own. I also have basically 0 combo cards at all, and while I don't especially favor combo decks, I should have them open as an option, I suppose. I also wouldn't mind basically anything for Caleb Durward's UB Tezz deck, since that deck looks sweet and I own, like, Thopter Foundries and Force of Wills. And Jaces. I think that's pretty close to about it, lol. But yeah. Foil staples (english) are always, always acceptable. Like, I have 1/4 foil Stoneforge, 2/4 foil Snapcaster, 2/4 foil Ponder (Dan Scott), and so forth. My eventual end goal is to have the ability to build just about anything I want and have the bulk of it be foiled -- so I'll reiterate, foil staples are -always- useful to that end.
-) As for "big wants" -- if I happen to get a baller who's feeling generous, I need the following to complete my 40/40: 3 Plateau, 4 Volc, 1 Savannah, 2 Scrub, 1 Badlands. Any of those would be awesome. I'd also -love- a Candelabra for 12post, and Mox Diamonds. I'm very much not expecting any of that, but I dunno what's "normal" for these things....this is my first year. Everyone else is putting down items like that, so I'm just following suit.
-) I'm an avid fan of vintage, although I'm between decks right now. German Oath of Druids would be hot as shit but pimp vintage stuff of any non-Dredge, non-Shops variety would be sweet.
-) German foil Zendikar lands, specifically Forest #246 or 249, Swamp #238 or 240, any Mountain, and Island #236. These are impossible to find, and they look sweet (different foiling process, I think).

-) I am also a fan of signed cards. Signed foil is as good as it gets for me (barring language constraints). Any playable signed card is sweet in my book.

When I say foreign this is the hierarchy: Korean > German > Russian > Japanese > French > Italian > Spanish > Chinese (I really hate chinese, korean and japanese are great but simplified and traditional chinese are pretty terrible. Unless it's the type of chinese with the bold font from before fifth dawn, that chinese is quite good looking although few people have it sadly.)

This sounds pretty fun, so I'd like to join this. I need to figure out a wishlist still, so that will come later. I'd rather not forget to sign up though.

EDIT 11/21: Wish list, organized by monetary value mostly. The most important thing I am looking for are the pieces to finish RUG tempo, as I have almost all the cards except mongeese and Stifles so that I can play that deck. I also play miracles without snapcaster mages or Vendilion Cliques, and would really like some in order to be able to play difference variations on the deck. I understand these are more expensive pieces, but I have a couple other things that would interest me. For quite awhile I have been trading for Dredge pieces for fun to try and put the whole thing together just through trades (I started with 3 dredge cards), so it might be fun if you have some pieces for that. Lastly, I also play EDH with a Captain Sisay and Sygg, River Cutthroat, so cool cards for that would be great. I have a ton of legends, so I put some here that I am mostly looking for. Sygg is aggro/tempo (I play things like Serendib Efreet, because it actually works well). If a card has a number on it, I would like up to that many of that card.

Two quick things:

1) I'll be out of town to attend an academic conference starting tomorrow and returning Wednesday. There might be a delay getting people's names on the list during that time.

2) There are only six days left to sign up! The deadline is Friday, November 16th. If you're on the fence, these events are often quite fun and you don't have to send someone everything on their wishlist, especially if that wishlist is loaded with expensive Japanese foil versions of top-end staples. Pretty much everyone is happy with getting miscellaneous cool stuff. Shouldn't be a problem even if you cant send staples/foils/foreign language X as long as what you do send is an honest try for a nice gift. Ya try your best to hit the wishlists but really they are more of a guide to tell you what the person might like more then a hard and fast you must send X from the list to participate. Some of the nicest gifts Ive received doing this haven't been worth much but you could tell the person read some of my other posts put some though into it. Others were totally random and made me smile XD

yeah it works. Anyway I don't know why but I had some problems, maybe because I had to split between people who wanted to go international and people who wanted to go eu-eu... dunno. Anyway problem was solved and your pairings are out! (god sending 33 pm's on the source is awkward when you have the 60 seconds limit!)

I kind of like the randomizing of things, it kind of eliminates the "Well i sent him X and i only recieved Y from him" when its randomized you don't feel you actually are owed as much, because its not coming from the guy you gave to too."

Just my thought, it'll be fine either way.

All I know is that I'm excited to put this package together. SS is one of the highlights of the holiday season for me. I am thankful for your work, but what's keeping you from entering the names in Excel, randomizing the order and going through the list (A -> B -> C -> A)? Seems like you made it unnecessarily complicated. :D

eheheh yeah but I'm more a paper + pen person so I wrote down all the stuff, I was just feeling more comfortable. It didn't really take long, probably less than 20 mins to have the ''pairings'' done. The long part was sending mails with the anti spam filter system here:eek:

Honestly, if it's important for someone to reach or exceed value parity in an event like this, they're probably going to be disappointed - not just with the Source version, but with Secret Santa in general. In previous years I've sent out ~$50-$75 worth of stuff and gotten anywhere from the same to maybe $25ish in return. It doesn't matter that much to me. As long as the person getting stuff is happy and I get something cool from my wishlist, I'm not going to try to keep score. (An aside: I do remember someone last year being sour about not getting a "fair" trade in his SS package. IIRC he was ridiculed for it.)

I think i was thinking more like what was posted after me, that this way it'll eliminate the feeling of a trade. I've done this the last two years, and i've had very short wish lists and have actually gotten a lot of stuff i could use not on my list. Its funny because sometimes Santa just knows. I never had problems receiving cards from US, Japan or Singapore (the only places I ordered cards from in the past), but I usually ask for FedEx shipping. Anyways I ordered cards from Japan 3 times and they were sent by regular postal service and received them in 6 days!

So don't worry, it shouldn't be a problem.

I asked for people to be backup Santas this year to help address some of this. I, myself, will have two backup packages ready in case people don't receive, and hopefully some of the other people who volunteered to be backups can actually be such. People are going to mooch in a system like this anyway because it's the internet, but people seem to enjoy this despite the risk.

I think the year I organized SS it worked out pretty well. I'm pretty sure every person received (although a couple got less valuable packages). That kind of thing is going to happen and it's a shame. I wish there was a more reliable way to ensure everyone comes out a winner but I think the best we can do is to outline the expectations and have whoever is organizing / helping, really pour their hearts into it.

Every year I've participated so far, I've tried to go above and beyond what I expect to receive knowing that I might not get anything in return.

If I get nothing this year, I will still feel the joy of giving. My biggest concern is that the package I send does not get to the recipient or is damaged.

Every year I've participated I've definitely sent out more than I received which is perfectly fine as I have more than most people I'm sure and I always did this as it's a fun legacy community activity. I just feel like there should be some consequence to those who commit fraud whether it be we create a black list or their accounts are banned there should be something that happens and people should be shamed by the community when they take advantage of the communities good nature.

My first package has been sent to my Secret Santa. It's not addressed from me, since I had to get it all sent from elsewhere in the world, but they'll most likely be getting another package from me with some special stuff.

To my Secret Santa: you've been looking for this card forever, and they're impossible to find. I had to call a few different people to find one, but I did. It doesn't seem much in terms of value, but it took a lot of negotiating and favour-calling to get it, and hopefully this makes up for the fact it's not super expensive (although, it was definitely above the minimum amount of send, so don't fear).

Of course I taught her to play magic with about one of the most difficult decks to master, Solidarity. She learned quick that destroying Islands is the best way to beat that deck with what she has available. Second deck I taught her was belcher with only 4 lands in it. She is about 50/50 beating me with it atm against Solidarity. My son plays my legacy goblin deck great and can beat solidarity and belcher about 60% of the time. And they are both under 8.


My packaged shipped today she said it may take up to 30 days to reach the recipient in Italy :( I am figuring a week or 2 at most. I had another item I wanted to include but I will save it for next year since I couldn't find it but now I remember where I kept my box of them. Its a ring life counter with 2 spinners numberd 0-9 and gold plated. I ordered a whole case to use as door prizes for a tournament and had some left.

On the flip side, sending from the U.S. to a country through our quasi government run postal service is kind of a pain in the ass also. Everything can be done automatically, online without interference from a person except sending shit overseas. You have to fill out a customs form, with an actual pen on actual paper in duplicate. It's miserable. You get like 8 numbers ... none of which track anything well. The only upside is that it's reasonably cheap. Shipping FedEx or DHL costs a fortune for just a few bucks in magic cards.

That's killer dude! I have to say I'm very proud of how this community comes together. I mean, sometimes things don't go perfectly but if you look at it as a whole, people are going above and beyond. This year wasn't as big for me as I'm kind of hard up but from what I've seen, most people are sending way more than the suggested minimum. My advice for folks that can't deliver a suitable gift is that they don't participate rather than half ass it. <- The beer talking.

It is kind of an unfortunate haul, but checking his wishlist, almost all of it is foreign and much of it is staples.

I'm not sure what you were hoping for, but you probably got assigned to someone of limited means who couldn't find what you wanted locally and didn't have the money available to order online. It sucks to put together a generous package and get something meager in return, but there is a risk that this will happen. I agree that people should pass on participating if they're worried they can't put together good packages, but putting together a good wishlist is also key to getting a good outcome.

The deadline to ship is on December 14th - next Friday! I am still waiting on shipping confirmation from thirteen people and will be sending out PMs on Wednesday asking for status updates. As much as it does suck to be in those situations, I do agree. It'd probably be best for both parties to have that person not participate. But that's me.

Also, I didn't ship with tracking as my SS was overseas and I don't have a lot of experience shipping to EU. I did know to claim the cards to be around 10 dollars, as that's what the cards are worth ;) I assume I sent early enough that they should get it by Christmas, though. Fingers are crossed.
