I don't see it in any deck

The main cause for its spike was a SCG Deck Tech feature with some odd slow Affinity list (http://www.starcitygames.com/events/coverage/deck_tech_affinity_with_dan_ho.html). It also sees play in the UB Tezzeret deck that Caleb Durward won an Open with, but that's a fringe deck (even if I do play it & The Abyss in my list).

Starcity bought all the euro ones, and bumped the price.

The U/B Tezzeret Control decks are running 1+, and it periodically shows up in Pox and other random decks. I think you can still find the occasional one, especially IT ones for cheaper, but it certainly does look like SCG bought up a bunch of them.

This has happened over the last year with Karakas (big increase) and Moat (small increase) as well. On the other side of things, Underground Seas have come down of their peak, since Esper Stoneblade doesn't need a playset, neither does TES or Reanimator, and only 1 of these decks is considered tier1.

Seems to be an ok card in some BUG control lists as a 1 of main deck.

Starcity bought all the euro ones, and bumped the price.

Basically this.

I'm following Magic Card Market prices on some of the more iconic or hard to find/obscure cards and in the last year or so I saw quite few "manufactured" spikes. To my knowledge this happened to:

Gaea's cradle Judge foil - those were for a very long time at 60-70ih€, one day supply decreased beyond rational and price was spiked to 120€

Maze of ith Judge foil - this one was also a classic - the price tag on this was for a long time under 50€ and again, somebody bought the majority on MKM and price was spiked basically overnight to 170€.. you couldn't find a copy under 170€.. that price was artifical. It's climbing down now gradually since the price tag on this card at 170€ is ridiculus.. but it is a fine example of an artifical spike.

Goblin matron foil 7th - perhaps this is the prime example of artifical spiking the price recently on MKM. I've been trying to gather a set of foils for very long time, meaning I follow this card closely, almost on daily basis. The price tag on this one was always 60(ex) -70€ (nm). In just one night the whole supply of foil Goblin matron was gone, one I presume major dealer has bought all foil goblin matron from MKM. Now the price tag on those is 110 to 160€ and english ones are almost impossible to find..

Tarmogoyf foil - I know the foil version of this card was always absurd. But when overnight 3 whole foil playsets are gone from MKM the priice has spiked for 30-40%.

So to all speculators and major dealers.. go burn in hell..

Mkm is leading the market prices just 'cuz players who are expecting to become seller do not know real quantities and rarities and this is a quite common process:
:0: buy cards for the new tier1 that are already increased due to last scg top8
:1: put cards on the platform when you are changing deck considering you have not to loose a single penny in the reselling process also if they are no more used in a tier1 deck
And now the funny part...
:2: a business oriented smart guy buy all the foil cards avalaible and put it on the platform again with a 15% price increase

in the last year? - i'm sure the price has been high since pre-2012
how artificial is a high price on this card, the print run was relatively small

How is this an artificial price spike? The Abyss has seen (very fringe) play in decks that are more popular than they should be because Star City events are popular and publicized. When a new deck comes out and isn't complete shit, people want to play it. The buyer for SCG even said that they couldn't keep up with demand and that he could only find at most 16 copies of this card on the internet.

People actually want this card now. I don't think it unreasonable that the card is reaching a price similar to Moat and Tabernacle, given that all three are sought-after rares from Legends.

While the demand for this card might be severely limited, but the supply is worse. Maybe twenty people want one copy each, that is more than the readily available supply of sixteen copies. The price might might have spiked faster than expected, unless someone knew there would be demand at that level.

Now some owners see these prices rise and won't sell, because it is now an "investment" and may continue to go up. Some some people will put their copies on the market, the price might fall, or a buyer might place in the next SCG open driving the price even higher. But because of uncertainty, most people won't sell their copies for just a small profit when it could be a bigger profit later.

It seems it is easier to buy a Mox than some of these Legends rares. This is because the liquidity of moxes is much greater as the demand has been known for a long time and people are willing to move their moxes.
