Hello,

I wrote an article for my local legacy group you can read here : http://southfloridamagic.com/archives/legacy-how-i-learned-to-stop-worrying-and-love-the-bombs

Thanks for reading. It's primarily targeted at my local Standard players who might be interested in breaking into my favorite format.

Happy to answer any questions.

Nice Intro.

However your Mono Black Re-Animator talks about Discard but does not have any in the deck?

Looking at your D&T list is also amusing; here is a $450 deck with $300 in 8 lands...

Shoot! Thanks for noticing that, must be an error in the [deck] code.. I'll get the editor to fix that now. There are :

4 Inquisition of Kozilek
4 Unmask
4 Entomb

Missing from that decklist. Regarding death & taxes, you're right. Though if you look at most legacy deck lists, almost all the $$$ for them is in lands. And most of the lands are usable between other decks, so that's the real barrier to entry.

Diggin' the article -- always down to see new words trying to get new players into a new format, especially when the one their playing sucks.

Edit: You might want to link to the budget deck discussion over here on the source for other 'option's regarding cheap-o decks.

Don't forget Angel of Serenity :)

I agree, SnT is obnoxious, though doesn't it feel extra good to beat them?

Though if you look at most legacy deck lists, almost all the $$$ for them is in lands. And most of the lands are usable between other decks, so that's the real barrier to entry.I know lands are expensive (I have my 40 Duals and 40 Fetches). Your article seemed to be aimed at beginning players and expensive lands is the main point I have found putting people off.

It is a nice deck, and maybe you wanted to show off what you were playing, but it did not really seem a good choice for the article when you compare it to Burn, Reanimator and the like. Ports (like Karakas should really be on the upgrade list).

Would have liked to see more variety of the budget decks, really. You focused a bit much on combo but a lot of people just don't like playing combo decks, and Death and Taxes being in the 400+$ range may scare people off.

For some ideas i would suggest checking out Squandered Resources: http://mtgsalvation.com/articles/writer/spooky.html especially the super budget series, there are some pretty mediocre decks, but a lot of them are pretty solid for their budget, and there is variety of archetypes - a few combo decks, some aggro decks, even some super-budget controlish decks.

If you're willing to go into the 400-500$ range, then you could very well choose a "Real" deck, instead of going budget - Death and taxes, as you showed, can be made for that price, but High tide is fairly cheap even with force of will, and UR Painter-stone decks, Enchantress(w/out moat), manaless dredge, Merfolk, some mono-white stax decks, Affinity, SuiB, Mono-blue control, & Certain Elves lists can all be made for around that price range I think.

I would include a goblins list as well. A "real" goblins list clocks in around $500-600, and shares Wastelands and Ports with the D&T list you posted. It would be a good example of how you can make different decks with only a little more investment once you have a few staples.
